I would think classical would be preferable to industrial for the developer. True, that area of downtown may not be as grand as further south on the peninsula, but there are ample neighboring buildings with classical motifs: there are numerous Charleston single houses nearby, as well as the facades of 19th and older store fronts along King. And if one of their goals with this project is to upgrade the image of Upper King, then build one to reflect that. (BTW, I'm not against industrial architecture at all if done right, but not sure a large hotel is the right project for that downtown.)

We do agree, though, that a monumental building is needed.
I tend to agree when it comes to greenfield development. Usually its new developments that lack character and originality. This thing, while quite large, is still one building amongst the sea of architecture that is downtown Charleston. Like it or not, megadevelopments tend to be more profitable than smaller ones, and in some cases more economical. This is also a redevelopment, so with multiple developers you run the risk of having unfinished portions of the plan.

Interesting vision. Clearly you have a dream for Charleston

Do you not see the work that is going on in the Neck area today as part of this dream? Ultimately Charleston will have to reinvest in the upper parts of downtown (uptown?) and tie in the future neck area to downtown.

These transportation projects you mention interest me because as I understand it, Mount Pleasant is already gearing its long range plans for rail service along 17, and Charleston is already planning on rail service to the north area and the other northwestern suburbs. The only area lacking seems to be West Ashely. I haven't seen any concepts for rail service there, but you coudl argue that of all the sub areas of Charleston, West Ashley needs rail service the least, and would be the more difficult to set up.
