I'll be visiting the city here in a few weeks, I'm driving up, but plan to leave my car once i get there. I'm staying at the Westin on Michigan Ave. However, the hotel parking is $46 per day! So, where can i find free or cheap parking that i can leave my car for a saturday-tuesday.

I know there is some free street parking, but is most of that time restricted?

help!

What I would do is go to the Metra's website:

http://metrarail.com/System_map/index.html

Metra is Chicago's commuter rail service (not the subway).

Find one of the Southern lines and look for a station that has free or cheap Park-N-Ride. For instance, assuming you're coming in from the South (Nashville), I would grab one of the Southern lines like the University Park line:

http://metrarail.com/Sched/me/university_park.shtml
(the blue areas mean there is parking available, usually free or maybe $1/day)

Call the parking contact phone number to see how you pay for multiple days if they charge for it.

Or Richton Park (2nd station on the same line):
http://metrarail.com/Sched/me/richton_park.shtml

One-way from University Park to Millennium Station (right along Michigan Ave) is $5.15. You'll love not having your car downtown to worry about. The train ride on the South Side into Millennium Station is spectacular.

The other option is to find an area like Kingsbury Street West of N. Clybourn & North Ave where there are no parking meters, and park your car on the street. For 4 overnights, that might be risky though.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=U...047035&z=15

Then you can just grab the Red Line subway into downtown, which has a station at North and Clybourn, for a couple of bucks:

http://www.transitchicago.com/maps/maps/200804N.html

Actually, if you're not huffing a bunch of luggage, you can probably walk the 2 or 3 miles from Kingsbury Street to the Westin on Michigan Ave.

Here is just a sampling of the recent developments going on in and around downtown Chicago:

The Chicago Transit Authority is renovating many of its subway and L train stations. This one is on the Red Line in the Gold Coast/River North area (on Chicago Ave I believe), along with a new TOD rising next door:

In the same block near Rush Street, old architecture is being quickly surrounded by more high-rise residential projects:

More beautiful buildings along Chicago Ave:

Quite possibly the smallest building undergoing renovation in the Gold Coast area, with the Red Line rumbling overhead every 12 minutes:

The streets are crammed with cars, even with ample public transportation:

\

Blues Brothers:

Beautiful historic residences pigeon-holed into the fabric, creating a perfect visual experience for the pedestrian:

Multi-million dollar brown and grey-stone mansions only steps from Lake Michigan beaches and the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue)

Rush Street near Cedar and Division, which used to be the only place to go "out on the town" in downtown Chicago just 15 years ago, now just another entertainment district in a wide array of choices:

More Rush and State Street area, with a beautiful triangle park in the center. Downtown Chicago could actually use a few more of these greenspaces, as development has almost choked out much of it in this area. Notice Hancock Tower peaking out just to the upper left (we are looking South from this vantage point)

More gazillion dollar buildings undergoing renovation along Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville, with unobstructed views of Lake Michigan:

A seemingly endless line of Gold Coast condo towers makes up much of the view along Lake Shore Drive heading North. This area has been used in countless movies and television shows.

This little section of street called East Lake Shore Drive used to be the main Lake Shore Drive, until the Lake Shore Drive "highway" bypassed this area. It's now home to multi-millionaires and the famous Drake Hotel. You may recognize it from many movies, especially those featuring presidents, scandals and crime-dramas:

Birds Eye view looking South

More to come, including River North, the new Lakeshore East development updates, and the rapidly growing South Loop area.

I hoof it all over the loop many times a week and it is surprisingly small. I usually have a shoulder bag and a duffle bag type suitcase with a shoulder strap. So if you are carrying something without a strap than get a taxi it will be a lot easier. With that said your hotel is on the outside of that area, so you might want to take a taxi anyway.

If you prefer to walk, from the Washington blue line station to your hotel is a haul but doable. If you want to complicate things even more though, you can transfer to the orange line at Clark and take the Orange line a stop to State and walk from there. That saves you really only two blocks maybe but might be worth it if you have heavy bags.

Without the bags, I would tell you for sure to walk it because it is a great walk but if you have too many bags or feel more comfortable with a taxi do that, it should not be hard at all to find one.

You'll only need to take the taxi twice though, once to the hotel from the station and then when you leave to go back to that station to head to the airport. It will be a small hike to get to your hotel and because of that I would just suggest taking a cab from the Washington/Dearborn Blue Line station to the hotel. It won't cost much of anything and will save you the headache of lugging all of that luggage several blocks. You'll only need to take the taxi twice though, once to the hotel from the station and then when you leave to go back to that station to head to the airport. For the remainder of your visit you'll be close to all kinds of transportation options in that location that is easily walked without luggage (and enjoyable I might add). Have fun!

The Blackstone is Back!

Chicago's famed Blackstone Hotel, host to many presidents and supposed origin of the phrase "smoke filled room", is open again after a 12 year hiatus. The hotel has been restored carefully, but with a more contemporary eye in furnishing. Most of the important historic features have been carefully restored, but a few alterations have been made. For instance, the Blackstone Theater, once host to the likes of Lean Horne, has been transformed into a dining room. The former barber shop has been restored, but is now used as a meeting room. Penthouse executive suites are presently under construction on the top floors and are scheduled to open in April. Having visited (but not stayed in) the hotel before it closed, I can easily say that renovations were desperately needed. The former owners ran the hotel on a shoestring for years. It's great to see it back in top form.

Chi-Town Daily News

Judging from their comments, everyone was attracted by the same thing – the truly iconic nature of this spectacular project, and the realization that The Chicago Spire is destined to become the most significant residential development in the world."

No two residences will be alike. Each suite, gallery and one- to four-bedroom home and penthouse will offer a unique floor plan and outstanding city or lakefront views. Each unit is designed by world renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.

“Our sales team was busy signing deals throughout the exhibition.” Ng said. Prices for Chicago Spire apartments range from US$750,000 for a suite to US$40m for a penthouse.

After Singapore, the Asia roadshow continues on to Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, before a tour of Europe and South Africa.

Garrett Kelleher, Executive Chairman of Shelbourne Development Group, remarked on the sophisticated investor climate of the Lion City, adding: “We were always confident of achieving our sales target in Singapore and we have been delighted with the enthusiasm the project has received and the level of sales achieved at the start of the South East Asian road show. We look forward to our next event in KL on the 8th of March.”

Developed by Irish property development company Shelbourne Development Group, The Chicago Spire has a build programme of four years. Situated on a 2.2 acre site where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan, it will be the world's tallest residential building. When completed, it will be home to 1,194 individual residences along with a range of amenities that will rival any in the world including health and fitness facilities, children and teen areas, cinema and private dining facilities, business centre, retail and restaurant services as well as a library, wine cellar and humidor.

Construction of The Chicago Spire began in June 2007. Completion and occupancy are expected in Q4 2011.
