This continues the significant upward trend in growth that began in 2006. The city grew by 1.5 percent this year.

The Bay Area climbed to 7.3 million people!

The City of Los Angeles, California's largest city, has a population of 4,045,873, which makes the city more than three times the size of the state's second largest city, San Diego, which now has an estimated 1,336,865 residents.

The 2008 report lists 478 California Cities, of which 439 gained population, 2 experienced no change, and the remaining 37 lost population. Compared to last year's report, more cities gained population and fewer cities lost population.

San Joaquin in Fresno County was the state's fastest growing city, increasing by 17.4 percent. The next four fastest growth rates were Beaumont in Riverside County (11.3 percent), California City in Kern County (9.6 percent), Imperial in Imperial County (8.3 percent), and Dublin in Alameda County (7.7 percent). All these cities added a large number of new housing units relative to their overall population sizes.

I have generally not been a fan of adding absurd height to SF skyline, but from this angle it does look reasonable. I Guess I have to have faith in the good people out there that created such a nice city to continue to protect what they created.

A cluster of skyscrapers rivaling the Transamerica Pyramid would rise around the West Coast's tallest tower in an ambitious proposal that would shift the heart of San Francisco's downtown south of Market Street.

The zoning plan, unveiled tonight at a packed public meeting, would allow as many as seven new skyscrapers to surpass the current 550-foot height limits in an area surrounding the planned Transbay tower- a high-rise of roughly 1,000 feet adjacent to a new Transbay Terminal at First and Mission streets.

I had to look it up because it has been a few years since I went there. It is called Canyon CA. The little hike I took was in redwoon regional park. and it was Moraga not Colma. not Idea how inaccurate i was. Sorry about that.

I came from Concord/Walnut Creek direction so I took Canyon road. If you want to get that view I mentioned there is a path that starts from the intersection of Canyon and pinehurst. Just head up the hill where canyon rd terminates.

Also in the spirit of urbanism, Have you been to Walnut creek? Its a synthetic town, but I am impressed with how they have been able to repair the damage that auto based development caused. Its actually quite a vibrant downtown and its pedestrian friendly. Sadly its not close enough to the BART station. I just wish more suburbs would see what they are doing and replicate it. granted there needs to be a little more mixed use elements with residential above the retail, but this town has always impressed me. The cities web site also has loads of great info on it about its plans to expand upon its success.

Yes, I have been to Walnut Creek. The company I'm working for is developing plans to move several depts. out there to an industrial park not very close to BART & a majority do not want commute to Walnut Creek, esp. those of us who don't live in the East Bay.

It's very different out there than in The City. Then I feel that way about most of the East Bay save entertaining BERKELEY which is in a league of its own. I hiked up to the top of a hill out near Colma. its basicly up the back of Oakland. the hike is through a suprising redwood forest, and at the top you can look down on oakland and SF in the background.

one of the best combinations of raw nature and urbanity in the world in my opinion.

There is a tiny town near there thats in the forest that is some kind of hippy enclave. totally in the middle of a forest in the middle of a massive metro.

Where's this hippy town that I would love to visit? I know of one with lots of hippies called Bolinas.
