After 10 years of effort by many, many people, the first leg of the South Branch Trail of Hartford's Park River Greenway is about to become a reality.

Who could have guessed that laying a trail across an unoccupied urban meadow could be so challenging?

There will be a groundbreaking for the project at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the corner of Nilan and Brookfield streets in southwest Hartford. The first stretch of paved trail will extend from that corner through meadow and forest to the corner of Brookfield Street and Flatbush Avenue. A loop from this segment closer to the river will be added later.

The trail is part of a comprehensive plan. Another section from Nilan Street to Newfield Avenue is ready to go as soon as funding (about $325,000) is available. It can link to West Hartford's Trout Brook Greenway, currently under construction in some areas.

good to see this starting.

I think this is the same group that wants to eventually open up the river some day.
Bradley is awful, Boise has a better terminal building. There are no services outside the gate area. The entire place is disjointed and dysfunctional. The deal given to the parking lot builder and operator borders on the criminal. Even the gates are mis-priced. The DOT should stick to what it does best, incompetent road building.

I read that article and thought that it is a good thing that Konover is letting Waterford step in. Waterford seems to know what they are doing, and they have done wonders for the areas aging hotel rooms. Not to mention the rooms tied into the hotel can only help. Potential visitors can see that this convention center has several different options at several different locations and price points.

If this hotel has been averaging 70% I am guessing with a reno and being tied to the convention center it might hit the 90% range.

The airport hotel faces increased competition from a larger number of hotels in the area immediately surrounding the airport. Occupancy at the hotel generally is in the 70 percent range overall, said Simon Konover, head of Konover Hotel Corp., a number that's considered to be on par with better-performing hotels in the Hartford area.

Konover, a longtime figure in local development, said the hotel needed to keep pace with the latest amenities and the development of the airport overall.

The Wolmans and Konovers have known each other for 20 years but have not previously worked on projects jointly.

"We felt we could best do this together," Konover said.

Details of the renovation plan are still being worked out, said Mark Wolman, who oversees construction and development at Waterford. In addition to guest rooms, renovations will update the concrete-block exterior and redesign the lobby, he said.

According to Starwood, lobbies of renovated hotels will include free Wi-Fi and computer stations with access to the Web. This will allow guests to search the Web, familiarize themselves with local attractions and print up boarding passes.

"We're committed to being a prototype of this new initiative," Mark Wolman said.

Hoyt H. Harper, senior vice president of brand management at Starwood, said renovations are essential for Sheratons at high-profile locations, such as airports, because they create one of the first impressions for travelers as they depart from their planes.

"We are raising the bar for quality and consistency at Sheratons throughout North America and the world," Harper said.

Len Wolman said Waterford was attracted to the project because the airport is growing, having added its first regularly scheduled international flight to Amsterdam last year. Although the economic slowdown could mean an erosion in both business and pleasure travel in the near future, he sees strong long-term trends, including the strong likelihood of more international flights in the future.

This is a great announcement in line with the other projects currently underway at the airport. Hartford just may have a great airport one day! I will love it when visitors can finally stop complaining about Bradley.

I agree. It almost seems so simple that it might've been how the intersection originally was configured.

I agree that something needs to be done here. When I commute home via capitol I keep thinking of what a mess it is an how isolated that one stretch of Capitol is. This might help remedy the design flaw of 84, that if you are leaving Asylum Hill around Aetna and want to travel on 84 WB, you have to go downtown hartford to catch the interstate.

I've also wondered about doing an intersection with Park Avenue and 84. Where the exits are on the north side of the street and upside down "u"'s... hope that's not too ambiguous, but i'm not too talented at map drawing on a computer.

2 more things.
Here is a nice Advocate article about everything happening in Stamford and the policies that have helped it.

I like this part

Stamford's reputation has been its success in obtaining $110 million in federal urban transit funds to build the urban transitway. "We got tired of the state not doing anything about transportation," Malloy said.

It seems as though every project is still happening. Even the massive ones. I suppose they are so large that the downturn is just a hickup for them. Heck many of these projects will not even be finished for a decade.

There is a simular Connpost article as well.
