I'd love to see new development come to Newark. The city is getting some great pieces into place. Prudential Center seems to be successful, NJPAC is a great asset. Units in 1180 Raymond are leased. But, I do hope that this proposal isn't slated for the Westinghouse site. By the description it's proposed for either that site or the site of the motel next to Riverfront Stadium. I hope for the latter. Thanks for the find, Voice of Reason!

Tourist trap is right. I'll still go check it out, though, but I'll save my skiing for real mountains. Seeing the indoor ski hill in Dubai, it looked kinda silly and not very fun.

As for the rail link, yeah a spur from Lautenberg Station in Secaucus will go in to serve the Meadowlands Sports Complex. There will probably be some sort of circulator/jitney to take people from the Sports Complex over to Xanadu. The rail link will be great because while it's on the NJ TRANSIT system, LIRR trains will cross Manhattan and bring people from the Island to the Meadowlands during sports events. Also, NJ TRANSIT has several proposals for extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, one of which calls for a run out to Xanadu and the Sports Complex.

I was driving up the NJTP late last night, and a huge monstrosity of a building was going up about where I thought the Meadowland was....at first I thought it was the new Giants stadium, but it was way too large for that, so after a small amount of research, I learned of Meadowlands Xanadu, which will be 4.8 MILLION square feet of retail and entertainment space including an indoor ski hill. I had never heard of this project before, but from the looks of it, its quite far along, with the exterior panels currently being applied.

Overall Complex Renderings

Anyway.....I find it somewhat appalling that this is going up on the edge of a city known for its great urban form, but I have no doubt it will be a huge tourist trap....

The Sheraton Meadowlands is directly across Route 3 from the Izod Center (it's Continental Airlines Arena now, btw) and they have rooms for under 200. There are a couple of Residence Inn types of hotels in that vicinity too, and a Renaissance Hotel (but I think that chain can get pricey). The only problem with hotels near Continental Arena is that you'd have to drive to both venues.

In downtown Newark there's a Hilton hotel that should have things available under 200. It's within walking distance to Prudential Center and Newark Penn Station. I don't know of any other major hotels in downtown Newark, but there are a TON near the airport, and some of them may offer shuttle services to Penn Station. The only problem with taking transit from Newark to the Meadowlands is that the rail link to the Meadowlands Sports Complex isn't constructed yet so the train isn't a great option for getting to Continental Arena. There may be bus services available between Newark Penn and the Sports Complex. Check out the itenerary planner on njtransit.com here: http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv...nnerItineraryTo

The output I got for a hypothetical trip at 10:20 AM gave me this itenerary...

Itinerary from NEWARK PENN STATION to CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ARENA (IZOD CENTER)

Itinerary
Depart : PENN STATION BUS LANES (07102)(On 76 Hackensack Local) 10:25 A.M.
Arrive : HACKENSACK ST. & PATERSON AVE. 11:09 A.M.

Transfer

Depart : PATERSON AVE. & HACKENSACK ST.(On 164 NewYork via Meadowlands) 11:16 A.M.
Arrive : W END PEDEST. OVRPS TO CONTINETAL ARENA 11:21 A.M.

Walk 0.88 mile NE to CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ARENA (IZOD CENTER)

REGULAR FARE CHILD/SENIOR/DISABLED FARE

Bus Fare $2.15 Bus Fare $1.00
Rail Fare $0.00 Rail Fare $0.00
Transfer Fee $0.65 Transfer Fee $0.30

Total $2.80 Total $1.30

So it would take an hour to make this trip on the bus with a transfer. I think wherever you stay you're going to have to drive to CAA. So if you stay within close or transitable distance to Newark Penn/Prudential Center you'd be OK. (now if it takes an hour to get out of CAA after a concert, maybe the bus is actually a good idea, IDK).

Hello everyone! I am planning my first trip to NJ and I need a little advice. I am travelling in February from Orlando to see some Spice Girls concerts at the new Prudential Center & the Izod Center; but I am finding it mindboggling to pick a hotel. I am getting a rental car, but since it is going to be FEBRUARY and possibly very SNOWY ::burr:: and I haven't seen snow in the last 3 years, I want to do as little driving as possible! (I grew up and lived in CT but moved away a few years ago) I would like a hotel near the PATH train or PENN Station so that I can hopefully take the train to the Prudential Center, and avoid any traffic. I don't really want to spend more than $200 a night. Can anyone make any suggestions? Anything that is relatively close to the two venues?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Ryan

Batsto Village was an iron foundry dating back to the mid-18th century. Despite being relatively small it was important and produced iron for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In the 19th century it turned from iron smelting to glassmaking and various forms of agriculture. Eventually these industries did not last and today it is remarkably preserved with over 40 buildings including a blacksmith, stables, post office, general store, mill, the Batsto mansion where the various owners lived over the years, and the old worker's homes. It's really a beautiful and one-of-a-kind place.

The Batsto Mansion, under renovation:

This building used to have a water wheel...when there used to be water!

Looking out over the Batsto Lake:

These are the houses the ironworkers once lived in.
Well, Harrah's imploded the Grand Casino in Biloxi after Katrina. At just 11 years old, the building was far from being totally destroyed by the storm. The casino company simply thought it would be easier to start with a claen slate- which is exactly what they are doing here . This is the same principle, though without the excuse of a major hurricane- just the modern-day casino business at work. The pressure to stay current is such that the lifespan of a casino hotel is considerably shorter than that of most of its peers. Unless it's designated as historic, it's usually far less expensive to demolish and rebuild than to renovate- especially with a 27 year old building. Not old enough to be historic, but just old enough to have gone out of style.

I find it a bit ridiculous/wasteful that a building put up just 27 years ago is knocked down. I understand the whole business concept, trying to stay fresh. But seriously... 27 year lifespan? Anyone else find that a bit nuts?

Bye, Bye, Baby....The Sands Fades Into History...

The successful implosion of the Sands Hotel & Casino took place this evening to the tune of Frank Sinatra crooning "Bye, Bye, Baby" and a huge fireworks display by the Grucci Co.. This is the first casino implosion on the east coast, but far from Atlantic City's first implosion. Unfortunately, most of the old grande dames who went before the Sands were real ladies, not a TraveLodge in sequins. Most of the old ones are missed, though this one won't be0- at least not for its architecture. What praise there was for the place came for its relative size- modest by today's standards for mega-hotels. I never stayed there myself, but I had a colleague at work who wouldn't stay anywhere else in town. We'll just have to see what these "spectacular" plans are that Pinnacle is holding up its sleeve.

WPVI Channel 6 News-- Philadelphia

Pinnacle Has Big Plans for Sands Site

Pinnacle Entertainment isn't revealing much about its plans for the site of the Sands and the adjacent site once occupied by Bruce Price's remarkable Traymore Hotel. Supposedly, it will "take your breath away", but I'm weary of hyperbole from casino executives. It is likely, however, that it may be something impressive, if only to compete with the Borgata and the other new developments now in the pipeline for Atlantic City. The article also has quite a bit of detail about how the building will be brought down. Interesting photos and bits about the Marlborough-Blenheim and the Traymore too. This is, incidentally, the first casino implosion on the east coast and its first nighttime implosion.

Atlantic City Weekly

More good news for Collingswood! As it turns out, the Lumber Yard project, which in and of itself was a brilliant move on the part of the town, was only the first phase of transit-oriented development in this small Philly suburb. Now they're talking about redeveloping some of the parking areas in the center of town, even building a parking garage - something I've been saying should happen for years but never actually thought could take place! Here's an excerpt from the Borough's press release:

QUOTE

Development talks will focus on areas along North Atlantic Ave, directly around the Speedline station. The Borough is considering more residential and commercial buildings and a parking garage to help address the area’s current parking situation. New Jersey Smart Growth initiatives encourage growth on already developed land rather than clearing new areas so work will take place over much of the current Speedline station parking area, making it necessary to replace and increase spaces.

http://www.collingswood.com/government/special-projects

By the way, the Lumber Yard really is turning out fantastic. I know a guy in Hoboken who recently transformed his rooftop into a huge patio with some greenery. I think it's a great use of the space and certainly if we covered it all with greenery there'd be less heat absorbtion. As for safety from burglars, most of these spaces are only open to the residents of the building and I doubt that would change. Of course such policy is no substitute for bars and good renters insurance!
