I have to say, I think far better uses could have found for the money spent on the park. This basically amounted to paying someone to rearrange your living room furniture. It may look better afterwords, but its still your same living room.

Just got back from downtown && harborfest.. glad I got to get down there before I went out of town.. The new park looks absolutely amazing.. the city really did an amazing job from the benches to the trees to the fountains and the concert stages.. it all looks great.. I took some pictures and will try to get them up here, I know all the downtown businesses are breathing a sigh of relief with the thousands and thousands of peoople who flocked to the downtown waterfront for the weekend.. the restaurants were packed, waterside was packed, the hotels seemed busy.. it's all good in the hood

http://hamptonroads.com/2009/07/crews-begi...y-tower-project

QUOTE

Just in time for Harborfest, the debris, overgrown weeds and two small lakes that have been on the site of the failed Granby Tower condominium project for more than a year are being cleaned up.

Earlier this week, workers began draining rainwater that accumulated in two large holes.

Friday morning, crews began using two earth movers to mow down the weeds, remove construction debris and level out mounds of dirt.

Workers referred questions to developer Buddy Gadams, who did not return phone calls.

City officials had warned Gadams months ago to clean up the site, which sits at the entrance to the downtown restaurant row on Granby Street. Gadams reacted by installing black mesh on fencing surrounding the site.

Rod Woolard, Norfolk’s director of economic development, responded in an e-mail he had not been informed of what work is going on at the Granby Tower site. But he added: “I am confident that they were doing what they committed they would do when this question came up sometime back.”

Granby Tower was to be a $180 million, 34-story condominium project that would have been the city’s tallest building, and the second tallest in the state. It would have had 302 condo units ranging in price from $270,000 to $1 million, as well as some retail and office space.

However, it fell victim to the collapse of the financial markets.

After losing his financing, Gadams halted construction in September 2007, two months after Turner Construction began work on the project.

Gadams’ company, 515 Granby LLC, has been the subject of numerous lawsuits ever since. Several people who placed deposits to hold condos have sued to get their money back. Many have been settled out of court.

Turner Construction and subcontractors are seeking more than $20 million in payment for construction costs. Norfolk Circuit Court records indicate those cases will go to trial in October.

Gadams has not spoken about the project publicly in months, but city officials say he continues to search for financing to resume the project.

Colley Ave has pedestrian activity because Ghent is very densely populated. Many of the large homes in Ghent are actually multiple rental units which you'd never know from the outside. Much of dowtown and especially Freemason is an older demographic because the price of real estate tends to be higher.
Talked to them last night. They are going to move to that other location, but also keep the York Street one going. That might eventually become delivery/catering only.

I was doing steak burritos but MAN it drove me straight to the toilet. So I went Chicken last night, and had a relapse. Double trips! I had come to expect it from the Steak, but the Chicken was new. I dunno man, something's up. Maybe I just ate too much cause the burritos are big and deceptive.

I think we'll be making more possie trips over to Moe's on 21st :-/

Wonder what is in the works for the Dekor Eklect / Appliance space. They never put a for rent sign up, I've got the suspicion that someone is already got dibs on the space.

I'd be willing to bet that the goal of both 201 21 and the Belmont at Freemason is for them to get a few people paying those rents (to claim the market can support it) then sell it off to suckers that aren't familiar with the market.

I just ran into someone who lived in my building (who I haven't seen for a while). He said he had moved out to somewhere cheaper around the corner (this is in Freemason) and now is moving over to Portsmouth because he can save $400 a month. I know another local guy who just moved in with his girl, so that frees up another spot (and he said there are 2 or 3 other empty units in the building).

I've been seeing some 3 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage houses show up for rent for $1K complete with washer dryer hookup. Might have to think about moving back to VaBeach myself. Heh.

But in the case of the River Line, yes. The RL is in South Jersey, away from the ports and the logistics hubs and it's not CSX's most vital route. And the LRT line there isn't a heavy hitter either. I think they're lucky if they get 10,000 riders/day. But the point was, mixing FRT and LRT can be done and has been done.

QUOTE (varider @ Jul 1 2009, 06:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I don't think it'd be feasible here

Agreed. I wouldn't recommend light rail on the 460 corridor. LRT is best for urban environments, and Ivor isn't one. The only pax rail talked about on that corridor is HSR, which I think would interface with the NS operations beautifully. The 460 rail line has an FRA density code of 4 (out of 7). It gets good use, but there's room to expand operations and do a lot more with that corridor.

As some someone who practically grew up on Marta (started riding alone around 12 years old) I constantly attempted to inform skeptical people (often whites) that this sort of thing was rare. Now I have a few stories to tell but most of the odd things I witness happen at hours when I probably should have be home anyway (i.e. 1am).

I have no real fear of incidents like this occurring on the Tide. Like I said this sort of this was rare in Atlanta, where believe me the crazy quotient is exceeding higher there than anywhere in HR.

But the persistent fear (or the political use) of scene's like this video has servery stunted the growth of Marta in the Atlanta Metro, where It should be twice as large. One bad incident could be difference between expansion into VA Beach or not. Trust me (like in the Atlanta metro) one ugly incident will be used as "Willie Horton" to kill the further projects. We can only hope and be vigilant.

Like I said previously when I posted a link to that video.
