Kentucky has had a similar falling off, both are states that have active established communities on other boards, it may just be those boards at this time continue to be the preferred venues. Basically all it would take would be 3 or 4 dedicated forumers in either state to get things going, but until we find those dedicated folks it may be slow going as more passive forumers tend to fall off if regular discussion is not taking place and content is not being driven. It will happen though, we just have to be patient with folks discovering UP and finding it a furtile ground to discuss their views and news on local developments.

It will be good once they actually begin construction and development of the lines. I can imagine that it will be quite the boosts for both Valparaiso and Lowell. I did however just read an article about how the expansion will make it harder for the other trains coming from MC or South Bend because of capacity problems but that may just be people trying to protect the other route. I cannot remeber where that article was though. As far as I am concerned, any increase in the rail network of Chicago is good. Especially when it is well funded.

I love the South Shore. It is great and cheap. It costs ten dollars more for a one way ticket from my home to Chicago than it does for a round trip during rush hour from Michigan City. The new stations are great and the on time performance is better than any other trains I have been on. I am amazed though at the amount of passenger growth that has occured since I began riding the train while I was in high school. Of course every time they raise the prices I still complain about it but as long as a round trip ticket is less than 20 dollars, it is the best way to go to downtown Chicago from Indiana. I mostly wanted to start a discussion about the line and the planned expansions (which I am excited about and concerned but we shall see) more than anything else.

I take the South Shore line quite a bit since I work a lot in Chicago but live most of the time in SW Michigan and I was reading about the Gary mayor changing his mind on combining the Downtown Metro center stop and the Miller Beach stop. So I thought it was a good time to discuss the future of the line. So you can talk about the expansion projects or just every day operation.

Personally, I cannot believe how crowded the trains are. Especially the rush hour trains but even weekend trains are often packed. I would like to see capacity improvements myself and I would be all for the consolidation of stops. Of course the real problems occur when the trains cross over to metra tracks and it takes for ever to go just a few miles. Increasing the speed would be great but I think it would be too much money especially since it would be metra tracks. Also, Millenium Station is gorgeous. I always assumed that the station would be under construction forever but it really has turned out great. I really like the look of the other new stations too. I am sure some people out there want better parking, so discuss what you like and do not like about the service.

Great photo thread. Shows off a lot of the diverse urban architecture the city has to offer, plus a glimpse for many into what the condition of the downtown is in.

The City Hall in Gary is great archetectural gem that definately harks back to a by-gone era in architectural design. Its a real diamond in the rough for the urban core.

Any pics of the old central train station? Is it even still up I suppose would also be a good question. It was a great structure as well, although gutted and left as a mere shell the last time I saw any photos of it.

Gary's downtown has a lot of potential. It will take some risk-taking pioneers to turn the downtown area around and get the ball rolling. Those pioneers will definitely have a vision what the downtown could become with work and dedication, not to mention have some significant financial backing to make that vision materalize over time and their investments pay-off.

^ Thanks for the update on LaPorte. I had not heard it was having such bad financial issues lately; but had read where the county was trying to get the inter-modal facility, which would be a great economic asset for county if established. Hopefully it will be. There is a lot of potential for NWIN IMO if things are planned and developed properly in the coming years, as a significant portion of the tertiary economic growth from Chicago seems destined to increasingly push over into the Indiana side of the metro area.

Welcome to the forum frank! Glad to have a NWIN member on the boards! Look forward to hopefully more posts from you about whats going on up there in the Calumet region.

However, LaPorte is plagued with unbelievable money problems. On going lawsuits form ADA, a mayor quoted saying the person he would most like to be is the Czar of Russia, employee pay that is the lowest in the three counties on central time and being a city full of people that think they are horribly over tax has created a very tense feeling of citizenship. LaPorte is just a little bit too far off the main path to be something special. The only saving grace that LaPorte can hope for is if the plans for an intermodal facility to be built just south of town go through. Odds are it will not happen because farmers will not sell their very productive land for development. If any thing is going to happen in LaPorte county it will be in Michigan City.

Evansville - City has plans for downtown city block

The City of Evansville is nearing completion of plans to purchase the old Greyhound bus station in downtown. This purchase will complete the city's redevopment board's aquistion of the "Kenny-Kent" block that us to house a sizable car dealership on most of that location by that name. The city hopes to redevelop the site as a mixed commercial with boutique shops, restaurants, and bars; or as possibly a new greenspace downtown.

City funds for a new Greyhound bus station are part of the deal to acquire the current property, while the city has no plans on tearing down the current station; so its incorporation into the site's future redevelop looks promising.

Read the story here at the Evansville Courier-Press. The Courier-Press is is a very solid paper and does a great job on covering the city's news in its local section.

It sounds like the city is really being proactive in trying to redevelop this sizable site in downtown, which will be great for the current revitalization efforts in downtown, of which a large part is currently condo and residential projects. The current mayor, Jonathan Weinzapfel, has been a very big proponent of revitalizing the downtown and has made it as major focus of his administration from what I have read.

Mitch has announced that he will seek another term.

I'm more disposed to support Democrats because of my beliefs as a social liberal. That said, I think there's plenty of room to bring sound business practices into public administration in place of political expediency.

Mitch has done some things that I mostly support, like privatizing the toll road; I think that in order to restore balanced transportation that includes non-private-auto options, it's important to put limited-access highways on more of a user-pays basis, and I'd like to see a toll system, possibly privatized, on the interstate highway system.

Some of the other things he's done, like unilaterally closing small-town license branches without community input, seem heavy-handed and insensitive to the needs of a lot of the older citizens in those towns. I am concerned about the ascendancy of Republican-aligned evangelical Christian theocracy over the past few years, of which the "In God We Trust" license plate is the latest manifestation.

I don't think he's been a particularly bad governor, and I'm waiting to see who the Democrats offer as an alternative.
