The five floors of the headhouse above the elevators will be converted into one residence each. I have doubts about that, seeing as because of the elevators, it is impossible to reach the residences. How will the tile elevator be renovated?

I rate it a 9. The Minneapolis skyline doesn't have a lot of buildings but it has a beautiful symmetry that few cities have. The tallest buildings are clustered in the middle with gradually shorter buildings flowing in each direction. I would liken it to Pittsburgh's skyline in terms of symmetry and the number of high rises. I lived in Rochester for a few years and was surprised and amazed the first time I saw downtown Minneapolis from a distance.

So I was in MPLS a few weeks ago! Wonderful city! Mall of America was amazing! Wasnt Lenox Square, Houston Galleria, or Copley/newbury st. but it was nice.....i loved downtown also with all the skywalks....its too bad that the Saks there was downgraded to an Off Saks...but the Neiman and the Macy*s was rather nice!

Unfortunately, they are not moderately priced--instead they are all upscale, high-end hotels like The Chambers, The Ivy, and The Westin.

Moderately priced Hotels I'd recommend in dwtn would include:

The Millenium (at 13th & Nicollet) (close to the south end of Nicollet Mall, which has great pubs (Brits and The Local), as well as great jazz clubs (The Dakota and Rossi's)
Holiday Inn Express: 3rd Ave S & 11th Street: this is also close to S. Nicollet
Crown Plaza Northstar: Located at 2nd Ave and 7th Street, this is in the core of downtown
Embassy Suites: 5th Ave at 7th Street, this is a fairly boring part of downtown, lots of office buildings and not much more, but its about a four block walk to Nicollet Mall
Best Western Downtown Inn (or something like that): this is close to the Embassy Suites
Residence Inn/Renaissance at the Depot: On the edge of the downtown core, but one block from the riverfront, this complex includes a nice waterpark, and is close to the historic Stone Arch Bridge, Mill City Museum and The Guthrie Theater.
Doubletree: A great location at 11th St just off Nicollet Mall--very busy S. Nicollet Mall area

Other hotels in the core to check out if any specials are offered:

The Marquette (at IDS Center)
The Radisson
Marriott City Center
Hilton

I'm unaware of any Turkish or Greek Restaurants in downtown, but there are three excellent Greek restaurants near downtown:
Its Greek To Me: at Lyndale Ave and Lake Street (Lyn-Lake area, SW of DT)
Christo's: 26XX S. Nicollet Ave (on Eat Street)
Gardens of Salonica: on 5th St NE, in the trendy St. Anthony area across the river from DT

Good Luck!!

I just noticed your request today. You've likely already completed your trip. If so, hope you had a good visit. If its still coming up, here's a brief overview of places to check out:
1. Uptown/Lyn-Lake -- Centered along Lake St & Hennepin Ave and Lyndale & Lake St (very busy streetlife, used bookshops, good restaurants and bars)
2. Eat Street (S. Nicollet around 26th Street) for ethnic restaurants (The Mpls Inst of Arts is also nearby)
3. Lakes District: Just west of Uptown--includes Lakes Calhoun, Isles, Harriet and Cedar lake: Each lake has its own personality : Calhoun is mostly 20s-30s age group, Harriet is more family oriented (with a trolley, Rose garden and Bandshell), Isles is lined with mansions, and Cedar is more remote
4. Downtown: Warehouse District or S. Nicollet Mall for restaurants and nightlife
The IDS Ctr is the 100% heart of dwtn (see the Crystal Court)
Nicollet Mall: Interesting pedestrian/transit mall lined with retail stores and restaurants

5. The Riverfront: Great views of the skyline and historic mills from the Stone Arch Bridge

If anyone has an idea for me that would be great i have never been there and have no idea. I will probably visit the Mall of America just to see it but i dont know what else there is to do, thanks.

Thanks, both for the comments. I'm not a mall person at all, so when I do go, it's rare occassion and extraordinary trip. I like more traditional-style communities, love the outdoors, so I know if I have access to Minny's park system, I will be a happy camper. I can do the suburbs, but can't do sprawl (know what I mean?). Though I'd love to live center city Minneapolis, it isn't a top priority. Living in close proximity, I suppose would be though.

I was just curious as Chanhassen may like my resume.

That whole area down there is pretty exurban. Chanhassen is pretty nice with its proximity to lakes, but also very spendy $$$.

I'd go with what Minneapolitan said and look for somewhere to live in the more inner-ring suburbs.

Edina, Hopkins, and St. Louis Park are more established and have older homes and St. Louis Park and Hopkins are both trying to establish "downtowns" with mainstreet style shopping and living, though that is also very expensive.

Edina is the traditional upper class suburb. They are bequeathed with the nickname "Cake eaters" by others.

The problem is with your commute. Having to commute on Hwy 62 or Hwy 169 is a big big no-no, though 494 was recently expanded in the area.

The southwest Metro is probably the fastest growing part of the metro, so most places are going to be more expensive as many corporations have operations in the south metro along the "Bloomington Strip" (494).

On the other hand, you'd be close to good shopping with the Mall of America 15 minutes away and Ridgedale about the same. Also, if this is a longer term move, it looks as though the southwest metro will be up for the next LRT line after the Central corridor.

Are you relocating to St. Cloud or are you just training there? St. Cloud is absolutely nothing special. It's the one city in Minnesota that made it into the "worst places in America" book and is described as a sad, cultureless pit where people go to eat at all-you-can-eat buffets and get fat and then sluff around in sad depression.

The whole city is sprawled and situated on one long street, division, which is amazing considering the "metro area" has 150,000 residents. The congestion is horrible, there is no green space, and there are no ordinances about anything with businesses, set backs.. so it's nothing but endless parking lots with very few trees and massive signs that tower into the air above everything else.

I have absolutely not one good thing to say about St. Cloud. The city is like a conglomeration of eating establishments and strip malls where hicks converge to gorge themselves. And that's a pretty positive way of looking at it.

Minneapolis, on the other hand, is very nice. I would look at a previous thread for good suggestions.

Pictures are always nice.

I was going to suggest that if you have time during the day or early evening to take the lightrail from the MOA into downtown Minneapolis and find the #16 bus (Metrodome stop) that will take you from downtown Minneapolis into downtown St. Paul via the UofM, the Midway area and numerous neighborhoods between Minneapolis and St. Paul. That route is the future Central Corridor line and would give you a taste of some of the local diversity and an idea as to how Minneapolis - St. Paul are related and how closely linked they could be once the the line is complete.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Well, if you’re going to be near the airport and want to head downtown Minneapolis, I suggest taking the lightrail at least one night. The line extends from the Mall of America, to MSP International Airport, Veteran's Clinic, Cedar-Riverside neighborhood (near the UofM), and onto downtown Minneapolis. You can get off at the Nicollet Ave. stop and from there you can do some shopping. You will find Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Saks Off Fifth, Target and several apparel stores. Depending on the time of day and of course, the weather, you shouldn’t have any problems asking for directions because there are usually plenty of people around.

Another option for you is to check out the new Guthrie Theater and/or Walker Arts Center, which recently expanded. Both institutions have great restaurants so you wouldn't have to worry about food. Don't forget that the State, Orpheum and Pantages theaters, as well as Orchestra Hall are all located downtown Minneapolis.

As far as food is concerned, here's a map of some restaurants in the Warehouse District. If you're looking for others, let me know. Downtown Minneapolis has quite a few places so there shouldn't be any concerns.
http://www.mplswarehouse.com/maps/WDBAMap2007.pdf
