Did the NAZIs really lose World War II?

Of course Germany lost the war, but it's common knowledge that scores of high ranking NAZIs, and NAZI war criminals were whisked away to South America. And who smuggled them out of Germany to safety? Well, American and British intelligence of course!

It's so well known that Israeli intelligence has been sniffing them out in Argentina for decades.

After the war, many German NAZI scientists were also secretly slipped into the Area 51 research facilities. A not so secret thing actually....almost everyone knows it.

And now...American marines in Afghanistan openly and proudly posing in front of a NAZI themed flag. Good grief, is anyone else as outraged as me? Is this not a strong hint re: the right-wing dictatorship we are headed to?

Obama for president in 2012? Will you vote for him?

^^ This doesn't surprise me at all. The more the American people see Obama's Republican opponents, the more people will flock to the President in droves. It will be a massive defeat for the Republicans in 2012, on the presidential level. And yes I have a crystal ball.

But Obama does not deserve re-election. I think he deserves impeachment. He swore, in 2008, to uphold the Constitution of the United States. He has failed to do so, as evidenced by his re signing Bush's Patriot Act. He also signed the NDAA which smashes the US Constitution to bits. Obama is supposed to be protecting the Constitution, yes? He has failed to do so, and he should be removed from office, let alone re-elected.

An interesting commentary by prominent progressive Rachel Maddow re:Obama's frightening moves to become a modern dictator.

A Democratic Socialist's Ideas for the U.S.

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53195&view=findpost&p=1160820

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53195&view=findpost&p=1160820

I used to be a Democrat. For years and years. Then the Democratic Party shifted so far to the right there was no way I could associate myself with it any further. My personal values tell me that the Democrats are now just another warmongering, corporate party.

So I'm looking more to Europe for political hope these days. Democratic Socialism, i.e. countries like Sweden and Denmark. Nations where war and oil aren't the central focus of the country.

I'm much too far to the left to be considered a Democrat any more.

Here are some ideas I have for our country: (of course they're just my opinions, which don't mean very much-lol)

****Within 6 months close all foreign military bases. Within 6 months bring all soldiers home, and through attrition, reduce the manpower of the military to normal Western standards.

****Shut down the CIA, and seize it's billions of dollars in properties and assets.

****Shut down Homeland Security (one of the biggest shams in recent memory)

****Full audit of FEMA, and the Federal Reserve.

****kick out all lobbysts from Washington D.C., end the Electoral College, and have full election monitoring, even at the most minor levels, by U.N. agencies. End corporate contributions to campaigns.

****immediately set up a $100 billion fund for a massive new ARTS PROGRAM. Beautiful, inspiring statues, and works of art all over America. Expanded museums, art and music festivals, free to all citizens. Art and music classes free to all citizens that are interested.

****immediately end poverty, hunger and homelessness in the U.S. Yes it can be done.

****immediate massive programs to build bridges and roads and highways that are always needed.

If we just stopped these insane wars, we could be that kind of society. A happy, peaceful society, more concerned with new museums, than new military bases and war carriers.

Just a Democratic Socialist's 2 cents.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I think crop circles are interesting. They have been linked to UFOs and many have seen strange lights in the skies the night before a crop circle was created. Many of these circles are hoaxes but some can't be explained. There are some where a high amount or radiation is detected along with other strange magnetic properties found in the circles. That rules out a hoax. Because of the shapes and complex patterns, its not likely a caused by a natural phenomena. But crop circles aren't new. They have been reported in the17th century.

Here is an drawing from the 17th century called the "mowing devil". It shows the devil created a crop circle.
Finally, if I fail again, is it permitted to direct users of this forum to my pictures sets at Picasaweb or Image Shack?
Thanks for you patience with this computer challenged person.

You are correct, members are unable to upload images to this site until they meet the 10 post minimum requirement. I do this so that new members who are potentially spammers (we do get our fair share of those) cannot abuse the system.
You are welcome to link to images on another image hosting website until then.
Gosh, I didn't mean for this thread to become a discussion on religious belief, etc-lol

I think almost all of agree that people should have the right to believe anything they please. And even though I'm an atheist, I would be the first one on the streets fighting, if the govt ever tried to make religion illegal.

I brought up this prayer breakfast business because it's yet another highly questionable political thing that Obama is involved in. When Obama says he's a christian, we must take him at his word. But how many of us think the president actually does pray in private~

I don't care if the President is a muslim, a christian, a Jew, a Buddhist, a Hindu, or even a believer in Ra the Sun God. But whatever he is, even if he's just a boring atheist like me, he shouldn't be using it to pander for votes. (Crass is the word that comes to mind.) When I voted for Obama in 2008, I would have never imagined him being involved with such diversionary politics.

By the way, during the infamous breakfast, Obama spoke of his visit with Billy Graham....and how they had become friends. And prayed for each other. Isn't that just lovely? The President of the United States of America having a warm meeting with a known anti-semite and racist!

Obama said he was so inspired after Billy prayed for him......maybe the President should meet up with David Duke as well. He could get even more inspiration!

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

My issues is with the Bush tax cuts. The wealthiest Americans don't need such large tax cuts. Those tax cuts are part of the problems why this country is in so much debt. Republicans will say if you raise taxes on the wealthy it will be a job killer. Obama is not seeking to raise taxes on businesses. He wants to raise them on personal incomes of the wealthy. That doesn't affect jobs. The rich will still have plenty of money to help spur the economy. I am totally against a flat tax because that would lower taxes for the wealthy even more while raising taxes on the poorest of Americans.

"Trickle down economics" don't work because if it did, the economy would have been booming at the end of Bush's second term.

As for Obama's religion, I really don't care if he is Christian or not. He wasn't voted into to office to be a pope like figure. We are going down a dangerous path if we start combining religion with politics. Domestic and foreign policy shouldn't be guided by religion. That's why there is a big mess in the middle east today. Those countries have been fighting each other for thousands of years over religion.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I am a Christian, and Charlotteman, I only pray in private. The Bible does say to pray in private. The Bible also teaches free will, which America is fortunate to have. I find it ironic that I tend to agree with atheists sometimes more than self-righteous people. We are all equal, no matter what a person feels.

I do also think that Obama is not a true Christian, but that is just my opinion and I have no proof.

As far as the economy goes bad whenever a republican gets in office, that's just ludicrous. I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and honestly, I think we need to raise taxes by 2%, lower corporate taxes, and cut entitlements by a TON. Everybody gives up something. Neither president is doing that, and it concerns me. However I think Romney would be most probable to raise taxes a little and cut entitlements a little. We'll see.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Unfortunately all politicians pander to some group. Romney is trying to pander to Latinos making his Latino heritage known and by showing members of his family on the Latino side. Gingrich was also pandering to Latinos hinting he would consider Florida's Marco Rubio for the VP spot. John McCain pandered to women by putting Sarah Palin on the ticket. A lot of women thought that was insulting. I wish pandering would stop on both side. Its so disrespectful to these groups. Bottom line, Obama hasn't been perfect and he hasn't fulfilled all his promises. But I'd rather have Obama any day over Romney or Gingrich. I'll be voting for Obama because we can't afford to turn around and go back. I don't want to see another economic collapse due to republican economic policies. Its amazing that people don't get it. Every time a republican gets in office, the economy slides.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Of course I totally agree. People have the right to believe anything they want. I'm talking about what politicians say in public in an official capacity.

My problem with prayer breakfasts, and praying in public, is that Obama is cheapening religious faith. He is blatantly trying to get religious fanatics' votes.

And he is doing so at taxpayer expense. We shouldn't sit by, and accept listening to religious extremism from the President of the US....... all that jesus talk, it was pure christianity. Religion is supposed to be separate from politics, yes?

And yes you're right, I wish Obama would just keep his supernatural ideas to himself. It makes many of us nervous. And I can imagine how those prayer breakfasts must go over in the European media. We're probably the laughing stock.

At the National Prayer Breakfast on Feb.2, President Obama claimed his religious faith is a guiding principle of his administration.

Omigosh didn't we hear this malarkey from the most corrupt president ever, George W. Bush? And we saw what good religion did for Bush~

Remember when it came to public light that during Ronald Reagan's last couple years in office, Nancy Reagan was running the White House through the guidance of three famous astrologers?

Do we really want our national leaders claiming supernatural influences, and looking to the paranormal to solve the nation's problems? Isn't this cause for alarm?

And why is our government funding such nonsense? Imagine what it cost the Secret Service to set up Obama's visit to this prayer breakfast...our government isn't supposed to be involved in religion, is it?

Just another blatant lie of Obama....he's about as christian as I am, which is zilch. But he is proving he is willing to pander for the votes of religious fanatics, just with the best of 'em.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

One thing that I did not understand? What is "member status", that you achieve after 10 posts? Aren't I a member now? And is file posting not free until after you post 10 times and become a member??
Finally, if I fail again, is it permitted to direct users of this forum to my pictures sets at Picasaweb or Image Shack?
Thanks for you patience with this computer challenged person.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Must be a pain any time you are in the middle of cooking dinner and then realize you have to go to the bathroom. And how do you do any entertaining that requires you to cook food while your guests wait int he living room?

He did have some very innovative ideas, particularly for storage space. I grew up camping (soft style) where we had an RV. We would certainly do quite well with a 24 ft camper for a week, so I can definitely see people living on much less space. I think the big thing is learning to give up having so much stuff. It's a trade off- you can give up the stuff, but you end up spending more because you have to go out and buy the same thing over and over againg for infrequently used items. I wonder how green it is in the long run.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

While driving through Trimble County, Kentucky after photographing the Milton-Madison Bridge, I turned onto Kentucky State Route 625 and stumbled upon an old schoolhouse.

I then came across this photograph of what was called District Number 3 School, built in 1899. The architecture of the school is very much similar, and is otherwise an exact match of Pleasant Retreat Ridge with the exception of the bell, which could have been later removed.

A fairly crude map from 1921-1922 of the schoolhouses in the county excludes Pleasant Retreat Ridge.

The antiquated schoolhouses were consolidated into the new Trimble County High School in 1932. I assume that a companion elementary school had been completed at around that time.

Nice post! True no president will ever be perfect...

Our leader has already been appointed to us...like it or not we have 4 more years of Obama. Those state caucuses are rigged(see Santorum in Iowa) too long to explain in detail. The only other choices they give us are globalist puppets Romney or Gingrich??

Ron Paul has an interesting message; but he is not part of the "establishment"; therefore he is ignored and swept under the corporate-media rug; like he was in the debate earlier this week...has NO chance. Big Brother informs us Paul is not-electable. When the real fact is Gingrich & Romney are the "unelectable" ones....

The Republicrats are yanking our chains! They did a great job with the entertaining flavor of the month candidates...Perry, Bachmann & Cain...

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

"Guatemalan Mayans to World: 2012 is Not the End, and We Should Know"

Quote

In it, author Kevin Rushby reminds us that unlike the Atlanteans, the ‘noble savage’ and other imaginary creatures Mayan culture still exists and continuous with its more grandiose past.

When Rushby asks a local Guatemalan shaman about the end-of-the-world prophecy, he says, “It is the end of a 5,126-year cycle, that’s true, but there is no mention of the end of the world. People seem to have got that from the Dresden Codex (a pre-Columbian volume of Mayan writings now in the State Library of Dresden). But in that record there is no mention of 2012.” According to Rushby, “Some millenarian-minded person had put these two separate records together and made a doomsday scenario.”

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

There has been much speculation about 2012 and that the government is preparing for it. Some point out evidence which reveals the government has built and is expanding large underground facilities under the Denver Intl Airport. The facility under the airport seems to be a huge bunker of some sort design to hold thousands of people. There are "containing areas" underground which are fenced off and the barbed wire faces inward as if theses areas were designed to keep people from getting out (civilian detainment camp). Currently there is extensive on going tunnel construction and some workers even admitted that what they were building was designed to hold people in event of a dooms day scenario. There is artwork in the terminal which depicts major natural catastrophes with a burning city (dooms day) and there are freemason symbols everywhere. Some of the artwork shows soldiers with Nazi swastikas and the runways themselves are laid out to look like a swastika. The strange artwork that depicts disasters, natural and man-made were painted by a Mayan artist. The ancient Mayans predicted 2012 ad as the end of the calendar date. In fact in the Denver Airport artwork there is a little girl holding a Mayan tablet which alludes to the 2012 date. The ancient Mayans saw the date as a re-birth but before the re-birth there is mass destruction of life. The earth has gone through these cycles many times over the planet's history which is why dinosaurs are no longer around.

To add to the conspiracy, one piece of artwork shows imagery of genocide. On the floor in front if this artwork there is a symbol that says Au Ag. On the periodic table those are symbols for gold and silver but they are also symbols for a new deadly strain of hepatitis called Australia Antigens (Au Ag).

There is even a plaque at the airport with a freemason symbol that says "the New World Airport Commission" in reference to "New World Order". The odd thing is that there was nothing wrong with the old airport and when they built this new Denver airport, they built it in an inconvenient location. Its been dubbed as "America's most inconvenient airport". it was also built in a high wind area which often causes many flight delays. The airport has more acreage than an airport that size could possibly need (53 square miles!). Clearly without a doubt there is something fishy about this airport and it was designed to be more than just an airport. Its pretty creepy and sinister. Queen Elizabeth II has purchased land near this airport and there appears to be no explanation as to why. Some have said if something were to happen in 2012, this airport would play an important role. There are a lot of theories as to what might happen.

Here is another strange sculpture at the Denver International Airport. It is a horse with eyes that light up. It is believed to represent the horse of the apocalypse. Its a creepy looking statue and in a freak accident the sculptor was killed by part of the statue. This is a very weird airport.

Obama for president in 2012? Will you vote for him?

I certainly understand the frustration. Has Obama been a perfect president? no. I don't think any president will ever be perfect. But its going to take more than 4 years to clean up the mess Bush put us into. I clearly will not be voting for Romeny or Gingrich. We don't need to return to the same policies that started the economic meltdown in 2008. Even If I were republican, I would not vote for Romney. He comes off like a used car salesman trying to convince me to buy a crappy car. He just seems like a very shady and dishonest person. Gingrich is scary ,but I do think Obama would beat him in the general election.

In your case you see Obama and Romney/Gingrich as the two evils. The only downside to sitting out on an election is that it could help contribute to the "worse of the two evils" getting elected. That would be the case if many democrats think that way.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Obama for president in 2012? Will you vote for him?

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53165&view=findpost&p=1159655

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53165&view=findpost&p=1159655

First of all I was an enthusiastic Obama supporter in 2008. I thought he was the best man for the job, someone who could clean up the appalling mess Bush left behind. How proud I was to vote for him!

I voted for change. I voted for progress. I voted for a return to American freedoms. I voted for a return to sane economic policies....

I got none of those things. I got Bush Part 2. I got a president that rules to the right of Bush--- in a multitude of areas. I got a president that frightens me more than Bush, and that's quite a remarkable thing.

Obama's first day in office saw the "corporate community" flood the White House and Executive governmental apparatus. And after a year or so, the thinly veiled mask of corporatism became obvious. Now it's glaringly obvious.

Obama's former chief of staff Daley is a former JP Morgan CEO. Rahm Emmaneul was also a Goldman Sachs big boy. Reading down a column of Obama's cabinet is like reading a who's-who of the Corporate Elite. Most high Federal governmental positions are being held by corporate big wigs.

How can Obama "clean up" the economic mess when the very causes of the problems are running things! Truth is, Obama was a Corporatist all along. He had us all fooled. He had us fooled on so many levels, that he quite literally takes the cake. A liar that makes Billy Clinton look like a saint.

Some (there are many) reasons I will not vote for President Obama in 2012:

*** He is a Corporatist who has created a modern Fascist state. I guess the modern term for it is Corporotacracy, but it still sounds like Fascism to me. The government is becoming so entangled with corporations, it's hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. Even federal prisons are going corporate!!

*** Obama is a right wing warmonger. He escalated the Afghanistan war theatre, and has attacked more countries than Bush. He has threatened almost every Middle Eastern country. Instead of opening dialog with Iran, he is just continuing the American tradition of threatening them.

*** Obama breaks promises worse than any politician in recent memory. From medical marijuana, to Capital Gains eliminations for small businesses, to kicking lobbyists out of Washington, to fully supporting gay rights....the list is endless.

*** Obama fully supports smashing constitutional freedoms to smitherines. He has continued the Patriot Act AND signed NDAA which allows Americans to be held without charges, a lawyer etc. He fully supports spying on American citizens, and breaking into people's homes without a warrant.

*** Obama signs every tax cut for rich people that reaches his desk. Of course he pretends in advance to be opposed to those Bush tax cuts, but it's all b.s. If he really opposed those tax cuts, why doesn't he fight them! take the case to the American people!

*** Which leads me to my final point. Obama is much more inept at getting through "his agenda" than any president that I can remember, even Jimmy Carter. I have a feeling the Bush economic stuff really is Obama's agenda....

Well this is my two cents. What do you folks think?

by the way, I would never in a million years vote for a Republican. This might be like 1996, a year I sat out the Presidential contest. No way was Clinton or Dole gonna get my vote. Just like Obama won't get my vote, nor any of those Republican clowns.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The Cydonia region on Mars is a "complex" which include the face on Mars and nearby "structures" that look like pyramids. There may be clear evidence they are artificial structures. The layout of the complex matches the layout of the Pleiades star system exactly. Its also interesting to note that it has been said that the human like extraterrestrials are from Pleiades. It has been said that the big secret is that life did not originate on Earth and that we are genetically related to these human like extraterrestrials. It explains why they look similar to us. These ETs were the basis for many myths and stories throughout time. They are the angels in the Bible. You see how this can be very explosive in the religious community. The space agency's almost unbelievable lack of interest since photograph of the face on Mars was taken by the Mars orbiting Viking craft in 1976, and its obstinate disregard for calls from other scientists to investigate the Cydonia mystery further, have raised suspicions of a cover-up. And why not? We know that our governments selectively censor potentially traumatic or destabilizing information. If something has been found with the potential to upset established social values and religious beliefs, then it is reasonable to suppose we might not have been told about it yet.

The layout of the Great Pyramids on earth also match the layout of stars. The pyramids match the layout of the 3 stars of Orion as they appeared in 10,500 bc. One of the shafts in the Great Pyramid is directly aimed at Orion. The Sphinx parallels with the face on Mars. Another interesting fact is that Cairo is the city that is located next to the Great Pyramids. The word Cairo mean "City of Mars"

Holy Bible:

Jer.32:20:
God has set signs and wonders
in the land of Egypt, even to this day

Isaiah19:19
In that day there shall be an altar to the Lord
in the midst of Egypt, and a monument at the
border there of to the Lord. And it shall be for
a sign, and a witness to the Lord of Hosts in
the land of Egypt.
(The Great Pyramid sits exactly on the old "border" of upper and lower Egypt. The numerical value of the Hebrew text of Isaiah 19:19 matches the height of the Great Pyramid in Hebrew inches )

Communism extreem left or extreem right?

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53137&view=findpost&p=1158674

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53137&view=findpost&p=1158674

There has been some talk about Rick Santorum versus his rather liberal family in Italy. Seems there is some talk about how some members were staunch Communists. The far right often throws the term Communism around as it's arch enemy, labeling it liberalism to the extreme. But is Communism really liberal?

I think Communism is, in fact, ultimate conservativism in practice. With Communism as it is practiced, you have a rather insulated controling faction, in this case the Communist Party, acting supposedly in the best interests of the general population, but mostly towards the betterment of that party. To be recognized or to advance you have to prove your dedication to that party, or you are shunned or discriminated against. Supposedly actions for the betterment of the group above the individual are recognized, but in practice it is usually the actions which promote the initiatives of the party versus those of the average person which are most admired.

If we were to compare the Soviet Style of Communism, they still had the big companies but called them bureaus. They were run by leaders who were dedicated to the party. In most cases there were more than one bureau focused on a particular trade area, so you cant even claim monopoly there. In the Soviet style economy, production was directed towards the interests of the party, not the consumer. But if you were to compare this to the Us style, it would be like production being directed towards what proved of interest to the stock market versus the consumer here.

The big difference I can come up with is that here the average person has a chance to partake, if on a very small level and with some pains, the stock market. Yet, is that not also a possibility for the Communists, in that they can participate in teh Communist party?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The death of JFK, Marilyn Monroe and UFOs

The deaths of both John F Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe have been very mysterious and most people believe that at least the government had something to do with JFK's death. Everyone knew about the affair JFK had with Marilyn Monroe and there is a good possibility JFK revealed some classified information to her. Marilyn Monroe kept a "diary of secrets" which talks about many things which likely included entries about the affair and any secret information revealed to her. It is believed that JFK told her about UFOs and investigators came to this conclusion by connecting all the dots. Just days before JFK's death, he wrote a classified letter to the head of the CIA. The subject of the letter was: "classification of all UFO intelligence files affecting national security" The letter talks about making distinctions between the "knowns" and "unknowns". Today the letter is currently in JFK's presidential library so its not a hoax. This letter links JFK with the UFO topic. Just days after this letter was typed, JFK was assassinated. One government official who worked with JFK said a private conversation came up between him and JFK and that JFK said he wanted to tell the people about UFOs but his hands were tied. Other government officials said they stopped briefing presidents about UFOs "after JFK".

There is another declassified CIA document that directly links Marilyn Monroe and JFK in regards to exchanging classified information. The title of that document was "Project Moon Dust" which was a project related to the recovery of space debris. The document stated that JFK told Monroe about "inspecting things from outer space". Of course the government would want you to believe it was Russian debris. Another interesting thing about the document is that there is a router number at the bottom and part of it says "MJ-12". In 1984 alleged FBI documents surfaced which directly talks about UFOs and alien beings found at Roswell. The FBI claims they are bogus but in those documents it talks about a group called the "Majestic 12" or "MJ-12" who was assigned to study all this. Its interesting that MJ-12 appears at the bottom of a confirmed declassified document and the subject of that document has to do with space debris recovery. To add to that, The name of the general at the top of the declassified CIA document was in charge of taking on UFO cases in the public domain.

A well known reporter at the time who was a close friend with Monroe was following up on things Monroe revealed to her. Some years later she mysteriously died (same way Monroe died.."drug overdose"). A few days before Monroe died, Marilyn said she was going to call a press conference and reveal "something that would shock the world". If you look at the politics and current events at the time, nothing was going on that would shock the world. Til this day Monroe's secret diary is still missing. When you connect the dots, it easy to see that all this was related to UFOs.

While this cover came out long before JFK became president, there is a sense of irony here....

MUCH like this comic strip which was printed in 1958 long before the "face on Mars" was discovered in the 1970s. All this seems too eerie!

Some of this is very interesting with exception to the kook at the end. A few things he said seem a bit too far out there.

Mountain State Tours: Fairmont, West Virginia

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53129&view=findpost&p=1158472

After having visited Morgantown earlier in the day, Fairmont, West Virginia was a complete change of scenery. Located deep within the north-central coal fields, the “Friendly City” dates to 1818 when land along the Monongahela River was divided into town lots. After the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1886, Fairmont flourished with the opening of the coal seams around the city and county. Peaking at nearly 30,000 citizens in 1950 due to the coal boom and other major industrial assortments, the town has regressed to under 20,000, mirroring the collapse of the local coal industry. Today, the local economy is becoming increasingly reliant on high-tech businesses, partially due to the development of Technology Park and the flurry of government, defense and government contractor agencies and businesses that have located at the site.

1 We started out by parking on Adams Street and completing a loop around the tight and dense downtown. The building to the immediate right, 314-320 Adams Street, was constructed in 1940 for the G.C. Murphy Company in the style similar to Art Deco.

3 The Fairmont Theatre, located at 416 Adams Street, was completed in 1940 in the Art Deco-style. It could be demolished for a state office building.

4 From left to right, the red corner structure at 234 Adams Street and Jefferson is the Comerford Building, constructed around 1880. The cream colored structure to the right, at 226-230 Adams Street, is the B.A. Fleming Building, also constructed around 1880. The 7-bay building is divided between two storefronts. The gray and dilipated building in the middle-right, at 222-224 Adams Street, is Hatter Bents Big Brick and was modernized in 1927. To the extreme right is the McCrory Building, a 3-story brick, six bay building constructed in 1909-1910.

5 The building to the extreme right is the Deveny Building constructed in 1917. To the left is 221 Monroe Street, constructed circa 1910 as a three-story, three-bay brick structure that was used for law offices. The fourth story was added around 1920. The adjoining building, with green metal detailing at 221 Monroe Street, was constructed around 1905 as a three-story commercial building with three bays and 3rd story arched windows. To the left, at 217 Monroe Street, was the Anna Building, an early apartment structure constructed in 1911 of the Renaissance Revival design. It was later named the Hayes Building. Finally, at the end of Monroe (209-211) was the city fire and police station, built in 1912 and expanded four years later. The three story building featured extensive glazed areas, two large service bays with segmental arches on the ground floor.

6 The Deveny Building is located at 223 Monroe Street at the corner with Adams Street in downtown Fairmont, West Virginia. The four-story brown-brick Neo-Classical Revival building was designed by J.C. Burchinal with C.D. Keyser of Bellaire, Ohio as the contractor, with the initial structure completed in 1917. Two more levels were added in 1925, and the building was purchased by the Vandalia Heritage Foundation in 2003 for conversion into lofts.

7 The right-most building, at 208 Adam Street, was constructed in 1884. The two-story brick structure was originally the cashier’s residence for the adjoining First National Bank, but a new front was built in 1917 for the Jones’ Department Store. The orange-glazed brick building to the left, at 210-212 Adams Street, was constructed in 1898 and represents one of the best architecturally significant buildings in downtown Fairmont. Designed for the First National Bank, the building combined the Romanesque and Neo Classical Revival style. It features a triple arched granite base, with polished squat columns and carved cushion capitals.
19 The historic Fairmont Hotel is located at 200 Jefferson Street. Designed by the C. Milburn, Heister and Company and constructed by the Fuller Construction Company from 1916-1917, the seven story building overlooked the Monongahela River valley. The hotel opened at a cost of $400,000 with 115 rooms with common spaces finished in mahogany. In 1984, the Fairmont Hotel was renovated into an 86-unit Section 202 apartment complex for the elderly and disabled.
The Masonic Temple is located at 320 Jefferson Street was designed by H.F. Griffin. The imposing six-story, 32,500 square foot building, designed in the Beaux Arts style, was constructed from 1906-1907 by the Brady Construction Company after being commissioned by the Masonic Lodge No. 9. The Masons spared no expense, stating that “nothing has been omitted to make this a modern lodge and first class office building in all its appointments.”

In 1993, the Masonic Temple was added to the National Register of Historic Places. While the building is abandoned today, stabilization work could begin at the end of the year to preserve the roof.

The Jacobs Building is located at 312-316 Monroe Street. Designed by Andrew C. Lyons, the five-story beige Roman-shaped press brick building was constructed in 1906 by Holbert & Spedden. Among its decorative highlights was trimmed blue stone, extensive terra cotta cornices and large glazed areas. Structurally, the building was built with steel columns and beams with wood floor joists.

The first level was originally home to the Racket Department Store, and served as the temporary offices for the City of Fairmont as well as the municipal court. The Union Business College occupied the fifth floor. In 1912, the J.H. Hartley & Son department store expanded from the adjoining Jacobs-Hutchinson Building by utilizing the first floor and basement as warehouse space, connecting to the Jacobs Building via a connecting walkway – later expanding with a sales floor. In 1927, the Hartley & Son store moved to Adams Street, and the Jones’ Department proceeded to move from its location across the street to the Jacobs-Hutchinson Building and Jacobs Building, remaining at the location with only cosmetic improvements with the exception of a loading dock that was built in the alley in 1971. Jones’ closed in 1977.

The Jacobs Building was recently restored and houses the Marion County Sheriff’s Department on the first level, with storage on the upper levels.
The Jacobs-Hutchinson Building is located at 201-209 Monroe Street. Designed by Andrew C. Lyons, the five-story beige Roman-shaped press brick building was constructed in 1902 by Holbert & Spedden Builders. Although given the appearance of being one large structure, the building was originally planned to be used as four separate business “houses.”

The Watson Building, an eight story Neo Renaissance limestone clad tower, Fairmont’s largest, was designed by C. Horace Trumbauer and constructed between 1909 and 1911. The building was named after James Otis Watson, referred to as the “Father” of coal industry in the state. The building housed the offices of the National Bank of Fairmont, Consolidation Coal, Fairmont & Clarksburg Traction Company, Fairmont Gas & Light Company and the Fairmont Chamber of Commerce.

Finally, we ended near where we began with the Marion County Courthouse, a Beaux Arts-style structure distinguished by monumental Corinthian porticoes and an impressive dome. Designed by the noted architectural firm Yost and Packard of Columbus, Ohio, bids for construction were opened in June 1897. The accepted bid, for $130,643, went to the Westwater and Company of Columbus, versus the Hamilton Brothers of Wheeling and G.W.L. Myers of Fairmont. The courthouse was mostly completed by mid-1900, with the grounds work finished by June. The imposing two-story government building is located at the corner of Jefferson and Adams street.

In 1960, the courthouse’s ground floor was renovated by L.D. Schmidt and Son. Additional first floor renovations in the county commissioners’ office and the Division II Circuit Courtroom were finished in 1977. The building is currently undergoing a $1.9 million renovation project.

Mountain State Tours: Morgantown, West Virginia

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53119&view=findpost&p=1158195

Continuing from a rather quiet morning in Wheeling, Morgantown, West Virginia could be considered an exact opposite. Located along the banks of the Monongahela River, the city of 29,000 is the largest in north central West Virginia and is home to West Virginia University with an enrollment of 29,000 students. The city and county are among the state's fastest growing, with Monongalia County posting an 18% gain in population in just the past decade alone.

The region is geographically challenged. Because of this, its residential neighborhoods sprawl out in each direction, and its downtown is fairly linear in a north to south pattern. The university campus is divided into three campuses: downtown, Evansdale and Health Sciences. All three are linked together with downtown Morgantown via the unique Personal Rapid Transit project, which was built in 1974 to replace an overburdened and inefficient bus network, reduce the amount of automobiles in downtown and to reduce congestion. The early success of the project led to a major expansion in 1978, and another expansion, proposed in 2010, could extend the line to the emerging Wharf District.

For this overcast Saturday, I toured downtown and a brief portion of the West Virginia University downtown campus. We started with where we parked at: Pleasant Street, which is a steep roadway leading out of the river valley up towards High Street, the main route through downtown.

Monongalia County was formed in 1776 from the Virginia District of West Augusta and was named for the Monongahela River. After the Mason Dixon line was recognized in 1783, officials discovered that the first meeting house of the county was in Pennsylvania, so the court met at the home of Zackquill Morgan. The second courthouse was finished in 1784 for $250. A third building was completed in 1802, and a fourth in 1848 for $6,500. The fifth and current courthouse was completed in 1891 for $43,478 and was designed by James Baily of Pittsburgh in the Romanesque Revival style, An annex was added on in 1976 for $1.5 million.

Along High Street was the Warner Theatre. The Warner is a historic Art Deco movie theater along High Street. Opened in 1931, it was designed by John Eberson and featured a 50-foot vertical marquee illuminated with over 6,000 light bulbs. The marquee was later removed and the theater was converted into a single screen theater, eventually becoming a multiplex in the 1970s. On September 5, 2010, the Warner closed its doors. The Round Table Corporation purchased the building in 2004 with the intention of restoring it into its original condition.

7 The Hotel Morgan, named for the founder of Morgantown, featured a ballroom, lobby, dining room and upscale finishings throughout. The building opened on October 16, 1925 along High Street.

Adjacent to the hotel is the Monongalia Arts Center. Designed by Oscar Wenderoth in the Classical Revival style and built in 1913, this architectural gem along High Street housed a post office. In September 1975, the building was purchased by the Louis F. Tanner family, whose family was the founder of the Morgantown Players, for the reuse of the building as a community arts center. In 1978, the Monongalia Arts Center opened to the public. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as the “Old Morgantown Post Office,” and was listed in the Downtown Morgantown Historic District in 1996.
To conclude Morgantown, I end on one of the best new developments in the city: the Wharf District, which acts as a gateway to the former Fairmont, Morgantown, and Pittsburgh Railroad, later the Baltimore and Ohio and today the Capterton Trail. Public and private investments have converted the derelict area along the river into a mixed-use community with a hotel, restaurants, retail shops, offices and loft apartments.
The McAlpin, at 15 West 4th Street in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, is the definition of urban residential living in the heart of the city. The development features 62 condominiums and was the partnership between Madison Marquette and JFP Properties. It was completed at a cost of $25 million.

Two Renaissance Revival buildings were constructed in 1859 and 1873 for the John Shillito Company and the Robert Mitchell Furniture Company. Noted architect James McLaughlin designed the Shillito building, while the Mitchell Furniture building was designed by James Keys Wilson. In 1901, the George W. McAlpin Company purchased the Mitchell Furniture Company building and converted the property into the McAlpin Department Store. Over the years, the store expanded into neighboring buildings, which remained in operation until 1996.
That calendar is actually a screen!! Reminds me of the moving pictures in the books in the Harry Potter movies. This technology can be applied to everything from newspapers to magazines. Books will look different because only one page is needed. "smart cards" will use this technology and replace drivers licenses, debit and credit cards. The cards will have displays on them. In fact you will be able to do online banking directly on the cards. You will also be able to punch in your debit card number directly onto the card before putting it into the ATM machine. That way scammers cant watch you punching your code on the atm machine. These smart cards will even be used to unlock your house or your cars. Now integrate these smart cards with smart phones! Eventually the manufacture of electronic paper will become incredibly cheap opening up the door for a wide range of uses. Imagine using your smart card as tickets to get into sporting or music events. This is very revolutionary.

Mountain State Tours: Wheeling, West Virginia

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53115&view=findpost&p=1158048

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53115&view=findpost&p=1158048

I departed Columbus, Ohio with two urban planners for what was self-described as a whirlwind tour of West Virginia's largest cities on a sunny and warm Saturday morning. With a friend from the Ohio Department of Development and a graduate student from Miami University, we traveled to Wheeling, Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg, Elkins, Lewisburg, Bluefield and Charleston over the period of three days.

Wheeling was our first stop to tour downtown and to complete a drive-by of the endangered East Wheeling Historic District. It was a quiet Saturday in downtown, with the exception of yet-another-demolition of historic building stock. This time, it was the "Port Heritage Business Center," that despite its tasteless modern facade, was a structurally sound multi-story brick structure on North Main Street.

2 The art store adjacent to the former "Heritage Port Business Center" isn't pleased that he'll be a lone wolf on the block.

5 The United Bank Building at 12th and North Main Street.

6 The Absure Tower at 12th and North Main Street (1201 Main Street) was constructed in 1915 and is underutilized. The building was once home to the National Bank of West Virginia and was designed by Wheeling-based architect Charles Bates.

7 A fantastic corner building at 12th and Market Street.

8 Between the Central Union Building and a pastel colored brick building is the modern WestBanco Building. It was founded as The German Bank in 1870.

9 What a great mix of downtown building styles.

10 The Central Union Building for the Central Union Trust at 14th and Market Street was completed in 1926. It connects to the modern WestBanco Building.

13 What Wheeling needs is more convenient surface lot parking. Being sarcastic, of course.

14 The original DiCarlos Pizza location along North Main Street between 12th and 13th Street has been demolished, although the building was structurally sound.
