http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53150&view=findpost&p=1159147

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=53150&view=findpost&p=1159147

I've always been a loser but I've never realized it until a few years ago. Never was good with people, and until very late in life I thought the only way to make friends and please people was to do and be everything they wanted us to. I shaped my personality on that of those I wanted to be friends with. I wasn't myself. So I was bullied, beaten, mocked, taken advantage of and such.

Then there were the parental units. Work took them away a lot, and the little time we spent together was them saying constantly I behaved like a lunatic and if I didn't behave properly I was to be commited to an institution. What a great thing to say to a child, right? My whole family, though small, started to see me this way. I was the crazy one, the child that never said anything that made sense, the child who always had to be watched lest he break, stole or severely damaged anything. Well, movin' on...

Let's see...School: Check; Parents/Family: Check; Work - Check my other story "damned if you do..."; That leaves married life.

I don't have to tell you about my love life, use your imagination under these circumstances. I met my future wife and eight years later we got married. Best and fastest day of my entire life. I later found out that my marriage isn't a partnership, but a domination. She's the dominating one, I'm the dominated one.

So at this point I really start thinking like that famous Demotivator poster with the picture of a sinking ship that says «It may be that your goal in life is to serve as a warning to others.». I looked around and realized that no one respected me, people saw me as a child of 5 in a 30 year-old body, the lunatic mad prankster who never took anything seriously and never did anything right. I had one last chance to prove myself to the world: to have children of my own, to make others around me see that I too could make something right, something beautiful. Then the Doctor told me I couldn't have children. I was sterile. No chance in Hell.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Here is a presentation for London's new iconic double decker bus. The new buses are scheduled to go into service by 2012, just in time for the apocalypse.

They're definitely modern and sleek looking. In addition to looks, the new buses are hybrids and are equipped with two staircases to the upper level.

I have been to Amsterdam so many times that it isn't special any more. I usually stay in Utrech which is a 15 minute train ride and more typically Dutch. There is plenty of fun to be had in Amsterdam though. I normally go there for Indonesian food which is the best in the world. I'm just not big into tourists. If possible while in Holland, go to the seashore and visit the surrounding towns that are magnificant. The Dutch are the nicest people in the world other than my native southerners (IMHO). Everything is so close. Oh yea, I remember the last time in Amsterdam, I was devoured by mosquitos. Check out the room first. Oh yea, last thing, the continental breakfasts are magnificant. Definately not like the Day's Inn.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Vacation in London

As a former Londoner, I will give you my favorite inexpensive restaurnats. First, I love Indian food and frequent Kahn's which is in Queensway behind Whiteleys shopping center. Go all the way down Queensway Rd. and turn left. It is on the left. The food is very reasonable and excellent. By the way, walk around Whiteleys. They have some very nice, reasonable places there as well.

For Chinese, I like Wonkie in Chinatown. I believe it is on Frith St. It is very close to Leister Square. The food is excellent and the price is the best. You may have to share a large table with others, but the others are generally friendly and it has never been a problem. Also, there may be a short wait but it is worth it.

I also love Lebanese food and it can be found in abundance on Marlebone Street.

For lunches, pubs usually have reasonably priced specials. I sometimes get the plowman's special which is meat, cheeses, bread and simple but good. Pininnis are popular and generally good.

I am not a steak eater so I can't give too much good advice other than I used to eat at the Cumberland Hotel in Marble Arch. There are good cafes all over. Another good place for lunch is Garfunkles on Picadilly Road near the circus.

I agree with the previous poster that suggested staying away from fish n chips. Ususally too greasy and can taste like sausage, chicken or whatever else they cook in the same grease. I will stick with my fish n chips at my favorite pubs in Charlotte.

Good eating. You will burn off all of your calaries walking.

By the way, the weather in London in April normally sucks. But, who knows? Expect 50s and light rain.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

What is arguable is how some large cities are grouped (Manchester-Liverpool, Randstad, Rhein-Main, Alma...), but considering the high density of those areas, why not ?
The metropolitan areas are written in boldface. To know their composition, just click on the name, then "cities" at the top of the new page.

So, according to World-Gazetteer, the 25 top metro areas in the European Union are (millions) :

London : 13.22
Paris : 11.89
Rhine-Rhur : 11.83
Randstad : 6.59
Barcelona : 4.97
Milan : 4.34
Is there Metro stats available?

I guess I was surprised to see the limited amount of cities w/ 1M plus populations. As you mention, it may be skewed due to metro populations.
I'd be interested to compare and also see newer figures.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I get into the Naples port early in the morning. I am generally familiar with the area as I have stayed in Sorrento, Capri, etc. I really hate to spend great amounts of money on ship excursions when I usually do things on my own and see more. Anyone have any suggestions on getting around the area cheaper. My wife hasn't seen anything in this part of Italy so I would like to go back to Pompei, Vesuvius, etc. Any helpful ideas.

A couple of years, someone in Stockholm gave me the bus route and suggestions for his city. It was the best trip I have had without going with other tourists.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I was standing at a bus stop in front of the City of Arts and Sciences. the first pic is of the same complex.

the building itself in the pic is the base of the Arbor. It was closed so I did not get to walk through it, but really, I saw everything else, so I have a hard time beleiving I missed much in the flora and fauna department.

If you ever get there. go the the Aquarium.

Its the largest in Europe and it really is amazing.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Good to see that so many people have information about Germany. I got a job offer for Berlin, beginning March 09 and I would like to gather as many information as possible. My biggest problem is the search for a flat. I tried my best on the web but all I could find about Berlin property is this and that wasn't very satisfying. Does anyone know if the real estate market in Germany has the same problem as the US market? Thank you very much in advance for your responses.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I am not exactly sure how this one will look on the street scape side. Generally a hotel in a place like that would usually be built to the highest standards, but it looks a bit bland and forboding.

the other one. I like the idea. wait, I love the idea of modern towers rising behind historic structures. this not only preserves history and keeps the street pedestrian, but it adds density and function to the area. Generally Hotels are a good development for cities. They provide decent jobs for many people, they help support the near by pubs and eateries. they do not put stress on school systems or even much road traffic.

I hope the best for your town. These projects both seem like an positive indication for your town.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

There's nothing on the sites at the moment, at least nothing of importance. On the picture below you can see the locations of the proposed buildings (both are to be hotels, run by different chains). Building 1 will be built in what is now part of a parking lot by the harbor area, next to a lower but modern-style building. Building 2 will be built behind a more historic building, a popular hotel in town. It's actually that hotel's idea to expand their hotel by building this new taller building in their own courtyard and somehow merging them together.

Greece is really incredible! I've been too a number of places there, including:

Parthas
Arrahova
Olympia
Delphi
Tolo
Corinth
Patmos
Epidauros
Mycenae
Athens
Mykonos
Crete
Rhodes
Santorini

If anyone ever goes through the Isles, Rhodes City is a must see! It is the largest city left in Europe with its Medieval architecture still completely intact. When you approach Rhodes, you are met by its huge city walls and enter the city through the city through one of the city gates. The streets are all narrow and paved with cobblestones and there are actually people live there, giving it lots of life. Just outside the city walls is the modern section of Rhodes. Rhodes is the capital of it's prefacture and has a population around 70,000. The island as a whole accounts for around 10% of Greece's population. Needless to say I've fallen completely in love in with country and have been eyeing companies that have operations there so I can relocate to there, preferably Athens or Rhodes.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Hard to believe that this photo was taken in December! I think this is the eastern part of Cannes before La Croisette Cape. The hills rise just behind the buildings, at right is the neighbourhood called La Californie.
La Croisette Beach is very select, a friend tell me she saw women sunbathing there with their jewels! Or it was at Bijou Plage (Jewel Beach), situated at the point of La Croisette Cape ?
Beyond those hills is Super Cannes and, further, the city of Vallauris famous for its ceramics, a city where Jean Marais a major French actor and Picasso lived.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I was there just after you.

I went to Santorini, and its true the Island is great, the views incredible volcano bla bla bla, but I hate American tourists, and Santorini had far too may of them. I think there were 7 cruise ships there one night.

Archipelligo is a great resturant if you go however.

I liked Naxos the most of every place I went. The island was more "real" and still had enough tourist contact to be comfortable fun easy to navigate etc. I suggest attending the cultural show in the castro that is put on every weekend night(all you can drink for 15 euros)

and stay at Astir of naxos. just the right distance away from the city so its quiet, but close enough you are always close. (super easy safe walk along beach 5 minutes)

Mykonos was very nice and we had a great hotel there. I acoided all the super touristy stuff like paradise beach. There is a beach like that in my home town that I used to lifeguard and I really have no interest in that kind of debauchery on my honeymoon. But if you are single... and you are not from the Hamptons or Miami beach get your freak on.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It's sounds like a city-journey because the winter is indeed not the best season to dive around the Golden Islands, only Menton is never freezing.
All those cities you mention can be reached with the TGV, also Nmes, the "French Rome". The fact is that a lot of sites around the cities are worth visiting and I don't know which are your tastes, and there are tons of museums, particularly on the Riviera.
Between Nmes and Avignon is the Pont du Gard, between Avignon and Arles stand the amazing dead-town of Les Baux. This December, there is the 50th international Santons fair in Arles (in three places : Saint-Trophime Cloister, Ste-Anne Chapel and Eglise des Trinitaires). Marseille is just a great working site at the moment and the Longchamp Palace (muse des Beaux-Arts) is closed. Among the perched villages on the riviera, the most famous is Eze. You may visit Vallauris near Cannes. The weather is sunny in Provence these days. Have a nice trip !

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
