Thanks Tom for the update. Been bugging a friend of mine who works for the hotel chain (starwood) to take me there. He told me the same thing about the roof top terrace. I guess I will have one or two drinks there and call it a night.

I think this is a fantastic idea. Everytime I would take Amtrak to New York and make the stop at New Carrolton it struck me that this part of Prince Georges should become much more pedestrian friendly because of the Metro station there and all of the office buildings that surround it. Right now it is not pedestrian friendly with broad boulevards and huge parking lots. Oh how I hate surface parking lots. If New Carrollton becomes urbanized I think it will become as much a destination as Bethesda, Clarendon or Ballston.

Per the article: "The initial Anacostia segment was chosen because it was an easy route to work out inevitable bugs in the system and because Anacostia was among the last communities to get Metrorail, officials said." That latter reason was one that came to mind as a possibility before even re-reading the article.

Went up to Baltimore a couple weeks ago and got a few generic tourist type shots. Unfortunately I was only there overnight so I wasn't able to do much more than the Inner Harbor. I love that city so I hope to get back up there soon and do some more off the beaten path type stuff. On to the photos.

I certainly want a streetcar system built here. I would question, however, the ultimate wisdom of building the first segments where they have chosen to build them. It's all very well and good to build them in Anacostia, but it is essential to build streetcars in other areas as well. I haven't seen much of a comprehensive plan- at least not yet.

The District's much-anticipated streetcar project is running behind schedule, pushing plans to run a red-and-gray trolley in Anacostia from late this year to sometime in 2012, officials said.

The demonstration project is part of an ambitious plan to create a billion-dollar network of streetcars and rapid buses in the District in the next two decades. The city bought three streetcars more than two years ago for $10 million. But the cars have been in storage in the Czech Republic as construction of the line has been delayed while officials have debated where the Anacostia segment should run.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will begin construction in 2012 and is set to be complete in 2015. The winning design was recently selected, which comes from the Freelon Group, Adjaye Associates, Davis Brody Bond, and SmithGroup architectural team. There were six firms that submitted designs. The museum is to go on the National Mall between the National Museum of Natural History and the Washington Monument. Here is the proposed design:
