What caught my attention was the notion that churches often have some of the largest green spaces in urban areas. Also of interest to me in this report were the variety of approaches different people were taking to the operation of community gardens in these spaces.

As a council member of my local church, it struck me that we have a bunch of open space at our church that would be ideal for a large garden. Furthermore, there seem to be several ways we could approach a community garden:

1. We simply make garden space available to neighbors (probably not effective since our neighbors have adequate space and their economic need is not great enough).
2. We install the garden, church members perform all the necessary duties and we then arrange to provide the crops to local food banks or shelters (the "we do it all ourselves" option).
3. We install a garden and have our church elementary school students use it as both a curriculum opportunity and a community service experience ("we do it all ourselves" with an educational benefit).
4. We provide our space to a local organization who has experience with this kind of thing and who has the distribution infrastructure in place to achieve maximum efficacy (we provide the space and let "professionals" do it better than we can ourselves).

Or... maybe the answer is some sort of mix of the above?

I'd be very interested in any direct experiences or knowledge others can share on this subject. I think our congregation could be very interested in pursuing this concept but I also know that we could expend a ton of energy and fall way short of its potential if our execution is flawed from the start. There seem to be a lot of potential pitfalls if we don't do our homework: What crops are most needed by the demographic in need? Are there health department issues? How would the distribution model work? Are there any liability issues? And as a former Planning Commissioner, I have to wonder about zoning issues? and... what if we end up pursuing this in a way that nobody has ever done before in this area? I'd hate for an effort like this to fall prey to unforeseen resistance or bureaucratic complexity...

Eager to hear everyone's thoughts... and would love to find an "expert" or two who might be willing to explore this with us.
Thanks in advance!

Filmmaker,
First off, let me say that I think that it is fantastic that you are thinking about this project and how your church's extra land can become a productive part of your community.

Here are a couple of resources off the top of my head for you to explore as you figure out how you want to approach this.

Charlie Snedeker is one of the heads of the Harvest for Heartside project. This group has overseen the development of a small community garden in Heartside Park in downtown (where land is definitely at a premium). They also organized the dispersal of fresh produce on Thursday evening grown in residents' backyards, the Heartside Garden, and a few local farms. A lot of the communication for those events was done through their Facebook page. You can also call Charlie at (616) 706-zero903. He's a really nice guy and loves to share his passion for gardening.

Other resources would be the Greater Grand Rapids Food Systems Council. http://www.foodshed.net/ They produce an annual guide to local food and may be aware of any programs similar to what you envision in the local area that you could use as a model and/or collaborate with.

Also, I think that the City of Grand Rapids is exploring some ways that they can encourage these types of activities through zoning changes and such. You may have heard about the citizens committee pushing for an ordinance allowing residential hens that goes along the same lines. I don't know how far along the pipeline these changes are, but the city of Grand Rapids seems receptive to these ideas.

You'll be happy to know that this stretch is listed as a priority area in the GVMC's Draft Non-Motorized plan from 2006.
See page 16: http://www.gvmc.org/...ized%20Plan.pdf

Also, from the plan in the "Measuring Demand for Non-Motorized Transportation" section (page 8):

Quote

Other non-motorized trips are difficult to measure due to
lack of data. People are walking and biking but who are they? Where are people going
and what is the purpose of their trips? Related to that, are there amenities available to
serve those who prefer to walk? If not, would the availability of amenities encourage
more walking trips?
These questions are tough to answer except through anecdotal evidence. Within the
Grand Valley Metro Council Transportation Planning Process, comments are received
addressing the need for non-motorized facilities in busy commercial and residential areas.
The provision of connected non-motorized facilities or an integrated network of facilities
has also been cited as a priority in transportation surveys distributed by the Metro
Council.

It's pretty easy to say there's no demand for bicycling and walking facilities when our regional, state, and national transportation planners completely ignore the question and don't bother to measure how many people are using these modes of transportation. Except, when they DO actually ask, there IS a demand! You get the same answer from the National Association of Realtors. When they poll their members, around 3/4ths say that their customers value having a walkable neighborhood.

Maybe this subject needs its own topic? Actually, it probably already has one in the Green Grand Rapids Connections thread...

You see a lack of sidewalks and bike lanes, I see a lack of demand by our culture to use them.
Our culture has to change before our roads do, anything before that is using tax money to manipulate how people get from point A to point B. Our culture is in love with the car. You can't coax that out of our culture. We build infrastructure on what people use, not what they might like to picture themselves using. Sidewalks and bike commuter lanes are mostly to appease safety concerns at this moment in time.

You see roads built on a demand to use them. I see a culture that is trained to use the car to get everywhere from childhood, partly because there are no other options when we have so poorly planned and designed our urban sprawl.

You see a lack of demand by our culture to use sidewalks and bike lanes. I see pathways worn in the grass in places where there are no sidewalks, lots of bicyclists riding on the sidewalk putting themselves and pedestrians in danger because they do not feel safe riding in the roadways, and pedestrians getting killed trying to cross a busy road because it's more than half a mile between crosswalks.

Our culture has been given a lack of options to choose from and been forced to choose the car. Is our culture really in love with the car or is our culture just in the habit of getting from point A to point B in their car because that's how they were raised and they don't see or have any other choices? Its some of both, really. What about the ~30% of the population who cannot drive a car because they are too young, too old, or are physically handicapped? That's a pretty big block to be excluding from the transportation system.

And since when is "appeasing" safety concerns a bad thing? Safety concerns of ALL people should be at the top of the list whenever you are designing a public built environment.

And to get back on topic, when this Sonic opens, I think I'm going to go to try another one of their flavored sodas that I keep hearing about. If I want a chili cheese dog, I have many, many way better options within 2 miles of my house.

One final quote about the effects of a car-centered environment on children:

Quote

One conclusion was immediately obvious: being part of traffic profoundly affects children’s perceptions. Many children primarily experience the world outside their homes from the backseat of a car. National surveys show that, on average, children spend more than an hour a day in a car, not including time in the school bus. Figure 3 shows a child’s windshield view of his world. As part of our study, this 10-year-old child, who was driven everywhere, was asked to draw a map of his neighborhood between home and school, as if he were “to describe it to someone.” The result was a series of disconnected paths that led separately from home to school, friends, or the mall, with little detail or connection with the community within which he lived.

Another participant of the same study, a child who was also driven everywhere, was unable to make any connection with his community between home and school and he resorted to marking a line through the middle of the paper, drawing his school above and his home below the line.

These examples show how neighborhood design — by placing schools, parks, and playgrounds away from homes and providing inadequate sidewalks and bike lanes to access them — can affect children’s sense of place. As parents are forced to chauffeur their children throughout their childhood, children can become cognitively disconnected from their community.

As a transportation planner for a highway agency for 29 years, I can assure you that how we have planned, designed, and built and operated our roads and streets, and the interrelationship with the surrounding land uses has had a HUGE impact on how people live and how they "choose" to get around. Yes, there will always be a need and desire to get in a car and truck and go someplace. But much of that demand has been created by, shall I say it, "social engineering" (not deliberately, but all the same, regardless). It's funny how some folks say that building sidewalks and mixed used development with transit service is social engineering, but building the Interstate system and mega-arterial streets is not. Besides, not everyone can or should or wants to hop into a car to drive half a mile or twenty miles. Are they supposed to be forever stuck in their homes, waiting on someone else, or putting their lives on the line just to walk to the store????

I could go on and on, but I won't. I think most of you understand what I'm saying and there are plenty of resources out there to investigate if you are interested in this issue.

No one is saying that capitalism or competition is bad. I'm just saying don't make a Sonic Drive Thru opening out to be what it's not: a net job creator. I only pick on Sonic because the absolute ridiculous coverage of its opening by the local TV media personalities (even tweeting non-stop about it).
Here's a link to a report Dangerous By Design
http://t4america.org/docs/dangerousbydesign/dangerous_by_design.pdf

In the last 15 years, more than 76,000 Americans have been killed while crossing or walking along a street in their community. Children, the elderly and ethnic minorities are disproportionately represented in this figure, but people of all ages and all walks of life have been struck down in the simple act of walking. These deaths typically are labeled “accidents,” and attributed to error on the part of motorist or pedestrian. In fact, however, an overwhelming proportion share a similar factor: They occurred along roadways that were dangerous by design, streets that were engineered for speeding cars and made little or no provision for people on foot, in wheelchairs or on a bicycle.

On a related note (although the Sonic locations are outside GR city limits), the biggest bottleneck to bicycle accommodation is on Greg Sundstrom's short list. (Can't find a link on MLive; article in last week's paper.)
