The whole idea with getting as many people on the fan page and the event is to show Google that the people of Grand Rapids want and will support the super fast fiber connection that they want to test. The large number of supportors shows Google that they can make a profit in this area above the cost of intalling the fiber network here.

Google Fiber

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=51199&view=findpost&p=1109059

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=51199&view=findpost&p=1109059

This whole "effort" to attract Google to cities (not just GR) seems cheesy and almost exclusively groupthink. I bet 10 dollars that 80% of those 20,000 Facebook fans have never once searched for a flac file, downloaded 14GBs off Steam, or uploaded a 30 minute 1080p mp4. Not because their internet connection is slow but because they've never had the inclination, use for, or knowledge to do so. 20-somethings who think they're trendy by sitting at coffee shops all day surfing Facebook do not need a 1gb/s connection. Would it be nice just to have the option? Yea, but other parts of the internet need work first.

The entire "improving the last mile" discussion is disingenuous. Anyone who has ever run a trace route (start > run > "cmd" > "tracert www.google.com") knows that the last mile is just ONE of a dozen hops (generally) that packets have to go through. DNS servers, backbone switches, transoceanic fiber queues. They all add to the latency and realistic available bandwidth of a home user's internet connection. If a packet travels through 12 hops to it's destination and the last mile (first two hops) is 4ms at 1gb/s BUT the last 9 hops average a latency of 128ms and a speed of 200mbit/s...thats as fast as that connection is going. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Also a bit of information that is dishonestly looked over: you can only download as fast as someone can upload to you. Example: Steam has a very robust supply of bandwidth for it's content servers at an estimated 200,000mbits/s. That's 200gb/s. So Steam, with a very healthy bandwidth supply, could only handle, AT MOST, 200 Google Fiber users downloading at top speed all at once. That is a horrendously low amount of users considering the stress those content servers experience when new games are released. Talk about a Denial of Service attack. Steam has over 3 million users and is growing exponentially.

The internet was never designed to be "efficient" as so many of these cities think Google Fiber will bring. It was designed to allow for failure and you've certainly experienced that design. Ever get a 404 page? Ever experience lag in a online multiplayer game? Ever get a connection timeout cause a vital information packet never made it to it's destination? Of course you have! You use the internet.

The real discussion, very much removed from Google, should be about transitioning the social conversation towards forcing city governments to treat internet infrastructure the same way they treat sewers, roadways, and electrical grids: as a public interest. Anything else is just the herd making noise about nonsensical, inane, and incoherent "problems."

I see city leaders drooling over Google Fiber but theres no mention of GR building it's own fiber network; becoming it's own ISP for residents. I'm disheartened by the herd mentality that has recently taken over the internet infrastructure discussion more so in everyday conversation than on here.

gvstudent, on 23 February 2010 - 09:51 AM, said:

I know the health/medical industry could benefit from Google Fiber but how would the film industry?

Shoot scene on location in GR, upload raw hi def footage to a editing company in LA, company edits, and sends back to director on set in GR to look over. At 12000 × 8700 theoretical pixels, IMAX movies have much more pixel density than a 1080p blu-ray movie at 1920 x 1080. More pixel density means larger amounts of data. A blu-ray disc has a unclear limit but 200GB discs are available so you can image the size of a uncompressed IMAX movie in it's full resolution glory and not shrunken down to measly blu-ray standards. I know not every movie is shot in IMAX but even traditional actual film movies (the original film) have much higher resolutions than whats compressed onto a blu-ray or DVD.

As for everyone saying "movies and TV shows should be online"; Mark Cuban hits the nail right on the head in my opinion:
Fresh Fields, Wild Oats and Whole Foods all came to the midwest within a few years of each other. Whole Foods took over Fresh Fields. It's in beta, but it works.

And when it routes you down, say, the east beltline, you can report that back to Google for future corrections.

Some interesting results. Here are comments from a few far-flung friends (home state first):

AZ: Google Bike Maps (http://maps.google.com/biking) rolled out today. Seems to work OK for urban trips in the Phoenix metro area. Having way more fun plugging in inter-city trips (like Phoenix to Flagstaff) and seeing how each of the suggested routes would be a one-way trip to the side of a milk carton.

Some of the roads that Google wants to send me down aren't really there - which is a Bad Thing in the middle of a very unforgiving desert. And only a few miles away is a freeway with a perfectly legal shoulder to ride on.
Just to put things in perspective, it seems to be doing OK on recommending decent routes in the urban area, where it'll get the most use.

FL: Within Orlando, not looking too good. Finds "bike facilities" regardless of quality and at the expense of better routes. Links them together with roads I would avoid. Been testing it against my routes... ranges from not quite ideal to "what were they thinking?"

I love Google's mapping software... the streetview and satellite are terrific resources. I hope they will improve the bike mapping, but I saw some results that make me think they've built it on the worst of cycling ignorance.

One section of a route was clearly drawn on the sidewalks and across crosswalks where there were no bike facilities. It led the rider to a nonexistent sidepath, then down that sidewalk against traffic, then a shoulder of a 6-lane arterial, then ooops, the rider was dumped into an interchange where she would have to cross 2 lanes of high speed traffic entering a freeway. Bizarre - find the most facilities, then dump the rider into what would be an impassable obstacle for someone who "needs" facilities. I'm going to do a writeup on that particular route and send it to them...

PA: I tried a 6-miler (my house to Emmaus) and a 50-miler (my house to Media, PA). In the 6-miler, it had me make a hairpin-right turn at the bottom of an 18 percent grade. For the 50-miler, it gave me the option of going slightly out of my way to ride on a rail trail. It chose roads I know to be less desirable than the routes I use in that area.
If anyone can make continuous improvements, it's Google.

CA: Currently, they lump facilities and terrain and traffic together, and the route selection algorithm prefers more, less, and less, respectively. I suggested (a few years ago when this was under initial development and open to internal suggestions) that they separate those three preferences. That wouldn't complicate the algorithm at all, but it would clutter the user interface. This is really pretty good for a first release, and perhaps they'll find a good way to expose those preference settings in a later version.

My favorite commute route takes me the entire length of Foothill Expressway, an excellent place to cover distance on a road bike, with few intersections, excellent pavement, and good sight lines. But it carries lots of traffic and has a 45mph speed limit. The algorithm routed me instead via a hodge-podge of neighborhood streets and multi-use paths, on which I would never be able to sustain a high enough cruise speed for long enough to get me to work in a useful amount of time. So if I were to depend upon this suggestion, I would actually be discouraged from riding to the office.

UT: I tested my 2.3 mi commute. The way I go has 7 turns and two stop signs, all on 2 lane 25mph residential streets The way they chose has 16 turns and one stop sign, and stair-steps through the neighborhoods. By comparison, the pedestrian route has 5 turns, goes down a big hill and back up and includes several blocks past a gravel pit where there is no shoulder or sidewalk. (they warn that they don't know about sidewalks). And the car route goes down and up a steep hill. All routes cover the same 2.3 miles.

Closer to home, here's their recommended route to cross the straits: http://tinyurl.com/yg57a48

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I just did my part with the Google/GR Nomination piece. Here's the text from my submission:

"As one of the most rapidly growing cities and regions of Midwest America with one of the most diverse economies (including the new industries of bio-technology, motion picture/film production, alternative energy, urban music and automotive electric battery production), Metropolitan Grand Rapids is well-positioned to offer a suitably impressive showcase for the new Google fiberoptic technology. With additional regional assets such as a metro population of 1.2 million people, an emerging world-class downtown area, high-profile educational institutions (Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University Medical School, Cooley Law School, Kendall College of Art & Design), an expanded airport with multiple low-cost carriers (Gerald R. Ford International Airport), a world-class bio-technology district (i.e. - Medical Mile w/ Spectrum Health, VanAndel Research Institute, Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, GVSU Health Sciences Center), 52 miles of Lake Michigan beachfront (30 minutes west of downtown Grand Rapids) and a geographic placement midway between Chicago and Detroit (two-hour drive west and east respectively), Metro Grand Rapids is sure to produce many benefits for Google as its testbed region."

I hope it helps turn their heads our way. I'd say open up a Catholic only apartment building, but i'm sure it would violate some laws.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

What's curious is that Faust just wants the city to endorse the concept of the plan at this time, like some kind of hypothetical exercise. What's the whole purpose of that? Is there any danger of lawsuit if the city just flat out rejects the concept? I don't understand why he's making this fantasy proposal. I do know it stinks to high heaven.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

There is a lot of concrete in the plaza, I agree, but the picture I posted of the finished building doesn't show the finished plaza. There were indeed benches added. Here is a most updated picture of the plaza I took a few months ago:

A few years ago, I seem to remember that there was a long term plan to build a sparkling new replacement LEED certified school for St. Andrews adjacent to this building and then tearing this building down.

While building a replacement building is clearly not in the cards, tearing this building down most likely is. So I suspect that many things could be done to this building to keep it as a part of the fabric....but I highly doubt that anything will.

My guess is surface parking. Or maybe if we really dream big, a plaza.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I remember Catholic Central had classes in St. Andrew's basement even after the math building was added on to. I don't know CC's current enrollment numbers and I assume they're declining, but St. Andrew's is small and could be half-way renovated for use by CC. Heck, maybe even West and CC could consolidate but then what would Coach T do for pep rallies?

As for saving; it totally should be. It's not architecturally significant but it does blend well with the CC/diocese's campus.

CC does not have a pool on site (except the one on the roof...yes, I still remember that old joke) or a full performing arts center. There is a band room (kinda cramped) in the gym building.

I don't believe there's enough money there for a brand new building to replace St. Andrew's unless something drastic happens (i.e. Peter Wege finds another $4 million or West Catholic and Catholic Central consolidate and West's property is sold off). Granted, I know nothing of the diocese's financial situation other than heresy.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It's not just Denver either. The prices to cities that Frontier connects to out of Denver dropped by about $200 too. The day before the Frontier announcement I was checking round-trip prices to Salt Lake City in May. The lowest prices were at least $500 when taxes were included. By the day after the announcement most airlines had dropped to as low as $258 (about $300 with taxes.) I booked my tickets this past Monday.
The Perry was a building worth saving - St. Andrew's School is not. I don't know what the classroom needs are for Catholic Central or what the diocese can afford but a new building on that site would get my vote. Does Catholic Central have a swimming pool on campus? How about a performing arts center? The GR Diocese has done an amazing job so far in the transformation of that area, this would be another step in the direction of eventually tying Catholic Central/Cathedral Square to the St.Mary's complex.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
