Nothing will change.

How come there are cities and states more liberal than Hartford and CT that thrive if this is the only reason Hartford is dead? Has brain dead urban and suburban land use policy played no role? Would some progressive laws and attitudes not help Hartford? Do you think that liquor should be sold on Sunday and that mass transit could help Hartford and other urban areas in CT? What party favors mass transit and urban investment? It sure is not yours my friend. I am not the blind one.

I am not quite sold on Lamont for governor. I'm still deciding who would best move our state forward in the ways important to me. I think that Malloy and OZ are also both very strong candidates. Any of the three would surely help our case more in DC where Rell never goes on this state's behalf.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I think it would be nice to have a nationally recognized Dem leading the state who has connections to the Obama people. I feel that it would be very much to our advantage and that he would definitely be lobbying DC for the funds we need and enacting progressive policies. However as VOR points out, OZ is a Hartford guy and that goes a long way with me. I would definitely be fine with him winning. I really do not like Linda McMahon at all from what I've seen of her. She just seems totally untrustworthy to me and willing to say whatever it takes to get elected. I would be willing to bet that she has next to no experience working in the community or doing anything in any inner city anywhere. I strongly support Blumenthal for senate. I don't really care who wins the AG seat. Really doesn't matter which party either to me. So I'll just vote my gut come election day.

Oh, I'm up!

You can't survive in CT on the salaries they are paying in the low cost countries. Truthfully you can't survive anywhere in the US on them. Most, if not all, of the countries they are moving work to have national health care eliminating that part of the compensation package from the equation. We will never be able to compete with the developing world as far as labor costs are concerned so there's really no point in trying. We do need to be more competitive against countries with similar demographic make ups and level of economic maturity but we can't race to the bottom against Singapore and Thailand. CT does need to be more competitive against other states in the US but if they just need to get the work done as cheap as possible then CT and more an more the entire US will not be the place to be.

How about the fact that conservative anti urban policies have left CT completely bereft of quality affordable housing that would lower the cost of living in this state. Do you not see that as a major issue?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I hope too that this attracts more companies to the region. The plus was that there is no mortgage on this property anymore, so I would think that is attractive.
the primary scope of this transportation project is in my opinion just slightly too small.

a critical barrier in this city that is at the norther end of this viaduct issue should also get some concideration.

take every example given and then ask yourself what I-84 does directly north of the study area.

it goes from a tunnel to a bridge. this is a huge vertical swing in the highway and it is also the most dangerous part of the raod, or at least it feels the least comfortable.

If we are building a tunnel in any of the last 3 examples, I ask, why dont we stay underground a little longer heading north and bring the highway under the rail lines.

this would free up as much or even more land for development thal all of the rest of the tunnel.

if that doesnt make sense I can post some drawings i made later, but i think that should make plenty of sense.

BACK TO WORK!

Great point! I wonder if they are not doing this because of the sewer lines. I think there are doing some digging in Bushnell park related to that sewer expansion.

I really like reclaiming the land on the corner of Broad street and Farmington. It would be great to see more parkland and a continuous connection to Bushnell park. Think of all the workers on Asylum Hill that would be able to seamlessly enjoy the amenity, instead of being cut-off by I-84.

I'm glad all of these are readdressing the Sisson Avenue interchange. Every time I take that exit, I always think of how it's such a waste of materials and so unnecessarily long.

I vote for the tunnel option (with the addition of going under the RR tracks. What a great way to get the economy moving.

And Finally, I think that Hartford should only have 1 highway going throuhg it, and that should be I-84. I think we should relocate 91 to go across the Charter Oak Bridge, connect with Route 2 and run up through East Hartford, eventually recrossing the CT River North of Hartford by the meadows.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

steep discount in this case is sill going to be a lot of money.
this is a 800,000 SF class A building on the river. it will be bought up mush like Metro Center was bought by Northland back in the 90s.

it will be looked at as a steal some day, but still likely 20 million+ so it wont attract real true bottom feeders like you mentioned. those guys don't have the scratch to pull this off.
it is very big news, and could be very influential on Hartfords short and mid term future if the right owner steps forward.
Financing commercial real estate purchases remains difficult, though some investors are beginning to get back into the market.

Still, if someone can pay cash, there potentially could be "a big upside" in the purchase, if the right tenant or tenants can be found, said Dale Reese, a senior Connecticut executive at New Boston.

But a strong stomach will be required, given that available office space in Greater Hartford increased to 21.2 percent as of Dec. 31, up from 18.2 percent a year ago, according to CB Richard Ellis.
A recent CB Richard Ellis forecast calls for another increase this year, to 23 percent.

I am thinking only bottom fishers will be at the auction, I just hope the new owner will not be someone like the so called developer who owned the butt ugly and the Capitol West building or that new age guru dude who runs a nice hotel in Constitution Plaza.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Jim, how much do you think public school teachers should be paid? Tenured public school teachers already make over twice as much as the average salary of private sector workers, not to mention free health care and lavish pensions. And that's not to mention the 6 hour workdays, 2 weeks off for winter break, spring break, Christmas/New Years break, and the whole summer off.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said. You seem to be way out of touch with your party, though!

I don't believe in party politics. I believe in the individual. We're stuck with the 2 party system and the party I most closely align with is the democrats.

I think $70-80k on average in the tougher school districts is fair (Central Falls is included here), while teachers in easier districts (generally those with more money, such as Barrington or East Greenwich) may not get paid quite as much (probably $60-70k on average). They do a whole lot more work than you think. I think the teachers' union was stupid in not taking the deal. They asked for way too much money. I also think that teachers need raises based on performance rather than what the union likes to call "experience". Number of years teaching only gets you so far. Teachers should absolutely NOT all be getting the same salary depending on years served. They should be getting a salary that they deserve and get fired if they aren't doing their jobs. They should NOT be protected by tenure unless they aren't meeting certain guidelines (which I don't have the expertise to list, but test scores and failure rate should be included). While I think everyone should have health insurance covered by the government if they can't afford to get it covered by themselves, I don't think teachers, or anyone in the public sector, should have it completely paid for. They should all be paying a portion of it (15% paid by the individual and 85% by the employer is generally fair).

This case is tough because many of the students are only going to school so that their families can still get welfare. The teachers can only do so much. But with a 50% failure rate you can't place all the blame on the students, even if many of them are not there to learn.

What you're calling a 6 hour workday is actually much longer. They generally go in around 7:30 and leave around 3:30. That's 8 hours. But you're not considering the amount of work they do outside of that grading assignments, writing lesson plans, etc. Many teachers also coach or help coach teams or lead student clubs. Sometimes they're paid for it, sometimes they're not. When they're paid for it, it's usually not a whole lot of money. Most people don't understand just how much teachers do and don't think they're nearly as important as they are. My life was shaped by my teachers when I was growing up. I went to private schools for a couple of reasons. When I was in public school, the students in my class were so bad, I was coming home with all the work I was supposed to be doing in school - this was 1st grade with a ton of homework. My parents put me in private school. I went to a private high school because the public one in my town was doing all sorts of weird things, like dropping class divisions, rank, etc. The honors students were taking classes with the lowest performing students, holding them back and forcing the low performers to learn at too fast a pace. Teachers at private schools (especially catholic schools) generally get paid quite a bit less than those at public schools. The ones who make a career out of it, rather than a stepping stone to public school, are extremely dedicated teachers, usually getting paid less than they are worth. They also tend to be held to higher standards.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I agree with you.
The 84 Viaduct Study Committee released a powerpoint not long ago with overviews of the various scenarios they are considering. I figured I would post them here so we could discuss what we think of them.

Viaduct Rebuild:

Boulevard:

Tunnel/Viaduct Combo:

Tunnel (1):

Tunnel (2):

My take is that I like the Boulevard choice best. I think that it would probably be the cheapest option, which is an import consideration. I also really like the intersection that it would create with Asylum Street. I think in that scenario, the lot west of Union Station would become a tremendous location for a signature development. I also like that it would create more real estate with direct frontage on Bushnell Park. Those parcels would be ideal for residential development. If they ever got built, along with the stalled YMCA project and something on the Parkview Hilton site, we would have a great residential cluster around the park.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It just does not make one bit of sense to pursue the busway now that we have a mass transit/ rail oriented administration in Washington. We need to get everything we can get while we can get it. There is a good chance we can upgrade our rail infrastructure at this point in time all across the state and it would truly be a waste of money and opportunity to throw away a good rail line in favor of a busway.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
