The former Seabrook Blanching Corp.'s Flavored Nuts building and the adjacent storefronts and garage as well as the Garman building demolitions are underway. According to the article these buildings became eyesores.
I was hoping someone had pictures of them pre-demolition or even pictures of them during demolition.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

This will bring the internatioal media to the city. In my opinion this is huge. Of course it's not the Steelers or Penguins winning a championship. But I doubt even that would bring posters back to this forum.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Watched "Bridge to Nowhere". Once again, not a terrible movie. This one does contain many more shots of downtown and the North Side. It's a gritty story, so a lot of it takes place in less attractive neighborhoods. If anyone has seen it, does that house that the main character buys really exist. Beautiful views and very modern architecture.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I like both my former hometowns. And for a while this forum was pretty active. Don't know what happened. I'm not a big poster, but I like to hear about both places other than from normal news outlets. I agree with JRNYP2C, there seems to be alot going on up there and I find skyscraper page pretty lacking on most of the topics mentioned. The're opening a casino next month. I never expected that. I'm a 'burgher who lives in Charlotte now for almost 10 years. I have been on UP for over 3 just to keep up on all the stuff that is going on in Charlotte.
Contrary to one of the posts, this site does NOT suck. It is all of what you make it. It isn't just about construction. I encourage the folks in Pittsburgh who frequent UP to start any kind of topic. It could be about the 3 Rivers Arts Festival, Oakland, the recent flooding in the eastern suburbs, the airport and its current status, roadwork (and the eternal headaches they bring), the cultural and arts scenes (southside, strip district etc.), port authority, and the list goes on and on!
Regardless if there isn't as much high-rise construction happening in the cbd lately (save the PNC tower), there are plenty of other things I would love to hear about on this forum. The renovation of Market Square. The refurbishing of the GC Murphy building. Warner Centre possibilities. Point Park and all of their plans. The on hold side of town by the convention center.
Hell - you have the G20 summit coming. If we had that in Charlotte, there would probably be about 100 pages of posts by now!
Some complete constructive criticism, this site can really rock for the Pittsburgh subforum. Start talking! There is a lot more going on than in the 'burgh than you think. And besides getting my info from the PG, I would rather hear from people on UP for opinions and thoughts!
Let's hear it! I want to hear good things about my hometown!
And hell, I even want to hear the bad things too!

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

How does SEPTA compare to other cities?

This topic is one that caught my attention because since I have lived here I have felt the biggest issue with this city is its archaic transit system. While it isnt as bad as Seattle, which currently uses a system of underground buses and a 2 stop monorail that costs 4 dollars. It is also not expanding like Seattle's system, it seems there has been no improvement in anything dealing with SEPTA since the 1980's. For example you need exactly $2 cash to ride, there is no way around this short of tokens(honestly who uses tokens anymore) and if you think you can buy a ticket using a debit/ credit card forget it. Also everyone seems to forget that West Philadelphia has a somewhat expansive subway to surface line that is horribly under funded and in need of an upgrade. As for the Subway lines that form a glorified t shape, good luck efficiently using them if you do not live in a 4 block radius of Market or Broad st. Philadelphia seems to be going in the direction of an auto based city which is crazy if you ask me, the lack of thouroughfares and horrible parking problem makes this city prime for an expansive mass transit system. That being said the city is facing huge growth potential in the future, if we want this to come to fruition were gonna have to do better then a mass transit authority that is only second worst to the one in Detroit. I dont post on these boards much instead i mostly scan them for information but this issue is one that I have been thinking about a lot recently. IMO almost anyone could run SEPTA better then SEPTA does.

It's true that SEPTA's fare collection is archaic. Even the MBTA is using electronic fare collection (Charlie Ticket/Cards). Even more ridiculous are the "Exact Change Only" token booths. There is absolutely no reason that a SEPTA cashier inside a booth cannot make change. I can understand that with bus drivers because making change would hold up the buses and screw up the schedules if drivers have to make change for every single person who gives the drivers more than the fare on top of all of their other duties. But a cashier in a subway token booth only has to handle fare money and give information to riders. They're not the ones driving the trains, so they should be able to make change.

About the Subway Surface line, it's true that people forget it exists and exactly how deep its five branches run into West Philly. Even SEPTA doesn't show the surface parts of the five S-S branches (unlike the MBTA which does show the surface parts of the Green Line branches, but not all of the surface stops). SEPTA should show the Subway Surface lines entirely (without all the surface stops, if necessary). The Subway Surface lines should count as part of SEPTA's subway system. If the MBTA, travel guides and Bostonians can count the Green Line as part of its subway system - which functions exactly the same as the Subway Surface lines - then, SEPTA, travel guides and Philadelphians should do the same. That's why I say Philadelphia does not have "only two" subway lines.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

How does SEPTA compare to other cities?

North Jersey is well-connected by the Path and NJ Transit commuter trains. South Jersey, although there's a major lack of coverage, has the Patco system and the Atlantic City line. Personally, there should be more coverage on the PATCO system to Woodbury, Deptford, Cherry Hill, and Maple Shade, and NJT coverage to Cumberland County, Salem County, Jersey Shore towns (Ocean City, Cape May, Toms River, etc., and Burlington County). You're right about the quote in bold. Unfortunately, the Delaware Valley region is way more separated than up in NYC.

As for SEPTA, it's the WORST transit agency if not in the US, in the WORLD, PERIOD!!! I'm just sick of all the excuses I keep on hearing about how they won't extend to Reading because the tracks west of Norristown isn't electrified, no service to the Lehigh Valley (where at least 30% of it's residents commute to Phila), the lack of NJT commuter train service to SJ, only two subway lines in the sixth largest city in America, no further subway extensions in Phila (look at Boston, Chicago, DC, LA, Miami, Dallas, Houston, St Louis, SF, and even Atlanta. The difference is that they're all trying to expand their mass transit systems while Phila is stuck in the dark ages). It's very frustrating to live in such an urban city like Phila, but have a lack of coverage in this city, to put it in shorter words.

I don't know if Philadelphia deserves quite that hard of a beating for the state of its public transit. At the very least Commuter rail can get you from Trenton to Newark, DE. It already links up with NJ Transit and in the very near future a possible MARC connection may be in the works as well. We are seeing the nascence of a truly regional transportation authority grow before us. Consider the possibilities! Through trains from New Jersey or the Philadelphia Suburbs to New York, Long Island, and Connecticut and vice versa. All at about half the cost of Amtrak. We finally seem to be catching up with the Europeans.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Hi I have lived in Philadelphia for the past 3 years, before that I lived in Seattle and New York City.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
