australia dose have ghettos but its not really the same
its not like you rep your block and everyone on your block is a og or some crap
but there are ghettos its just for some reason people have always denied them
because the public is feed that australia is a good place every where, where as the u.s news and media jumps right on that and complanes about it the main reason i think is because australians arnt big sooks
when i got robbed on a train i didnt care to much i just thort "oh bad day" or "bad train" not oh dear its a ghetto like the yanks and iv been robbed on the train 3 times now by different people (i think lol)
but there are ghetto in most of australias main citys
but for bad one's the worst one's would be
adelade alot of drugs and white gangs not so much ethnics
melborue well probly the best of the one's listed but for some reason is know better for crimes, lots of asian and lebonese gang wars and mafia
brisbane is probly the worst for ethnic gangs and such, higher death rate's and stuff like that also drugs is on the up and for some reason there are people there are black people who clam there bloods and crips and i think there are more and more coming
darwin iv never been there for to long but im sure its pretty bad
but who the fudge comes to australia to look at that crap lol

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

If you have never been there, you might not believe it but Auckland has a huge Quarry near the city center. Ok its more in the eastern part of the city, but certainly closer to the CBD than you would imagine. There have been talks of developing the land for several years.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/8/story....jectid=10514657
Looks like it is moving forward now.

A $300 million property development is planned on the edge of the 110ha Mt Wellington quarry in Auckland.

Seven office blocks and a health/lifestyle development are ear-marked for the area and the backers are calling their project LA Central, using an abbreviation of Lunn Ave.

Auckland City has granted permission for the project and more than 1500 carparks will be developed.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Hi. I am moving my family to the Sunshine Coast for a change of pace in life... we are moving from Chicago.
Reccomendations for where we might look to live... we have children, don't want to be anywhere touristy, and want some good progressive schools - kindergarten through high school. I work in IT... job options out that way, or is a commute to brisbane the only option. Maleny has been suggested?
Any thoughts would be helpful!

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Auckland's skyline is set to be transformed as developers buck gloomy property forecasts with plans for at least five skyscrapers in the next three years.

The 232m Elliot Tower planned for the corner of Victoria and Albert streets will become the city's second-tallest building, while the 144m Saffron Apartments at 51-53 Albert St will be the fifth. The other schemes aiming for the sky are the proposed 120m, 39-storey Antipodean Apartments on top of the St James Theatre, a 26-storey hotel - again in Albert St - and a 114m residential/retail tower in Shortland St.

Since I left NZ just over 2 years ago so many projects have been built. small verticle apartment buildings are common, but now it looks like some real skyline changers are in the works. Regardless of the economic downturn, Auckland is such a rapidly growing city that there always seems to be a market. Also, Auckland is now more than ever the capitol of Polynesia and will always attract people from the rest of pacifica.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The development proposals had to meet Auckland City Council's objectives:

to provide a transport interchange

the creation of a low-rise heritage based area where the city meets the sea

the creation of an environment which contains a rich mix of activities and ensures the precinct is vibrant 24 hours a day

an upgrade and revitalisation of the area which ensures a people dominated and safe environment

a desire to reinforce and reinvigorate retailing in the downtown area.

Key features of the mixed-use development

a combination of retail, lifestyle, commercial and residential uses

active management of the area to enable an energised environment and an attractive location for lifestyle tenants

restoration of 17 historic buildings

development of six new buildings including:

two central buildings of seven and nine stories, linked with sky bridges and containing 2 levels of fashion stores

a substantial east building with an open atrium and surrounding retail stores

a new 675 space car parking building to be built by Bluewater but owned and operated by Auckland City Council, with 450 allocated and 225 short-term spaces

a "walking street" called Te Ara Tahuhu which will be lined with cafes and retail stores

two major new public spaces:

Takutai Square at the eastern end which will be a public gathering space and the site of public entertainment activities enclosed by heritage and new buildings on four sides

Station Plaza, behind the central post office that will be enhanced with kiosks and sheltered walkways

$2 million will be invested in streetscapes and landscaping to enhance the precinct and create links with the rest of the city to attract people into the area

the agreement with the council provides for a construction period of up to 11 years. However, it is hoped that if current market conditions and level of tenant interest continues, the Britomart Precinct will be substantially finished within eight years

Pip Cheshire of Cheshire Architects has been appointed as Master Architect to oversee the project and approve all design elements.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

If its for Otago, please do whatever you can to keep Glenerchy from being turned into a sprawly US style suburb. An American bought 18000 Hectars there with plans to develop them. If just in Gueenstown area I would guess that its already too late to keep pristine, and traffic will be the biggest problem with the terrain making roads difficult.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I lived in NZ for a year ending 10/1/2005. I was able to experience living in the country during a lions rugby tour, the tri nations, an election, and the hiliday season. I can say easily 1000 great things about New zealand. there are however huge problems in the cities.
They call it "P" we call it Meth. 10 year old kids are doing Herbal drugs that might as well be narcotic, and by the time they are 13 they have tried P. it seems every other flat has evidence of P production on the walls, and every electric stove has stains from young people "spotting"

DRUGS.. sure every country has problems, but in my experience it is much closer to an epidemic in NZ. the worst thing is that the Maori and immigrant polynesians are the most affected, and a culture of living off the dole (welfare) and doing drugs while Hooning around in a WRX is concidered the good life.

I lived in Aucklands affluant northern suburbs, and spent 1-2 nights a week in Auckland. I was a bartender, and knew most everyone in the hospitality scene/club scene. and yes this is the drug scene. But I also was involved in construction and property development, and knew people from all walks of life.

it seemed to me that everyone smokes weed (likely close to 80%) many people do herbals (60%+) a large number do E, (40%?) and a disturbingly large % smoked or snorted P

all that being said. I would move to Queenstown in a Heartbeat if I thought I had enough money to do so.

To anyone looking to study abroad here I suggest Univ of Otago. its in the best city in the country in the best part of the country, and it has the best reputation of all of the universities. Duneiden (SP) is small like every NZ city outside of Auckland but has more charm than most, and is very close to many of New Zealands best Natural attractions.

If anyone wants to know anything about this country or its cities, please send me a message. I will give honest frank, non sugarcoated answers.

More about Auckland.(good this time)

It's pretty and its tall. If you take the ferry from Gulf Harbor you get a great view of the city If I remember to I will post a picture I took. The city is still undergoing a building boom that has lasted almost a decade. the next time I get back there I am sure I will not even recognize the skyline. there are dozens of condo and apartment towers going up not only downtown, but in the posh inner suburbs. Parnell and Poncaby. The Auckland Museum is incredible especially for Maori and Polynesian artifacts. The maratime Museum on the waterfront is a great place to spend the day. having a major university downtown helps contribute to the cities life, and a simple but effective highway system does a fine job of getting people to work(although they all complain thinking a 30minute comute is long) There is a fledgling rail system and a great bus system. The socialized healthcare kinda sucks, but is nice as long as you do not need surgery.

<a href="http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/sk/li/?id=101237&bt=2&ht=2&sro=1" target="_blank">http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/sk/li/?...;ht=2&sro=1</a>
this link should show all of the built Vs proposed and approved buildings in town. Kind of reminds me of the building boom in Miami. My buddy says the market is just starting to cool a little over there. we will see

I see a great deal of boosterism here about Auckland, and I can say from my experience it is both impressive, and dissapointing.

The socialized healthcare kinda sucks, but is nice as long as you do not need surgery.

http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/sk/li/?...;ht=2&sro=1
this link should show all of the built Vs proposed and approved buildings in town. Kind of reminds me of the building boom in Miami. My buddy says the market is just starting to cool a little over there. we will see

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Hi there

Hopefully i can give you a different perspective. I have lived in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and now Adelaide. Personally i am really enjoying Adelaide and i think it is one of the most under rated cities in Australia. If you are a young person looking for a big city with lots of action then it cetainly isnt the place to come. But if you have children and are looking for a city that is safe has good education, good weather, affordable and arguably the best food and wine in the country then this is the place to come.

Much to my surprisement when i moved here it was no where near as dull as it is made out to be. More than enough night life and per capita there seems to be more festivals and events here than anywhere else. I think one of the main problems is that people from the eastern states still look at Adelaide from a 1980s/1990s perspective but things have changed remarkably in the last 5-10yrs.

The best thing for the time being about Adelaide is its affordability. Of all the capital cities (except for maybe Hobart) houses are easily the best value for money. If your thinking of buying you may want to be quick though because we are expecting a mining boom here in SA much like the recent boom in the West and although great for the state it could push prices up a bit.

When migrating Adelaide for some reason is classified as a regional city (the only major capital city given this classification) this means you get more points towards your application and i have a feeling it also helps to get in to Univeristy courses as well.

All in all i dont have a bad thing to say about Adelaide and i can see myself staying here for good. Really is a city with a great future regardless of what people interstate will try and tell you.

Good luck with your move

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

This is the dryest continent on the planet. We are now in a huge drought, this is nothing new.

Waht is new is that form the mid-1980's onwards (in times of huge urban growth) political decisions were made not to upgrade storage dams or build any new ones. This is from the mis-guided idea of saving trees and hugging furry animals, and simple populism.

Trouble is, the reality of life is that the bigger a city gets, the more people there are drawing on water. If the city has the same amount of water availabie as before, then of course it runs out of water as soon as a drought hits. That's easy to work out.

Add to that, Australians are generally not conscious of water useage. I grew up on a farm where we were completely dependant on rainwater to live. So it's ingraned in me - don't leave a tap running, wash a few clothers by hand instead of using the machine, don't stand in the shower for more than a few minutes, etc. In urban areas these ideas are only now getting attention.

In my first council job in Sydney, in 2001, the staff told people who wanted to install rainwater tanks that they were prohibited and they should not try. Now we have city dwellers seeking to install tanks, very small tanks at that, and finally it ie being encouraged.

So don't be put off by recent events and the excitement that goes with it. Managed correctly, and with common sense, things will be fine.

Moving To Australia

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=27978&view=findpost&p=753555

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=27978&view=findpost&p=753555

Hi there,

I'm a bit biased, so will completely agree that the grass is greener here! Now all we need is rain to actually make the grass grow, but that's another matter.

Firstly, thanskfully, only one Australian university follows the North American model of graduate programmes vs undergrads. A university is the same, and offers various progerammes depending on its size. Ususally undergraduate programmes are in a particular discipline (not a general degree) and a post-graduate is for a specialisation.

Sydney is liveable, but amazingly expensive. I deliberately live in the outer suburbs so that I can afford a nice house and not pay squillions for a small box in the inner-city. The trouble with that is, I have to drive everywhere! But it's a price I'm happy to pay.

Taxation for supporting public transport is a dream here, and is unlikely to happen. Sydney's Lord Mayor has some interesting ideas (including a fantasy of running light rail down narrow streets) but they remain goals, and have not enought political momentum to make them a reality at this time.

Water conservation here is essential, and as a person who grew up on a farm totally dependant on rainwater, it's about time urban dwellers finally thought about the ways they use water. That said, formal restrictions have some really harsh elements to them. Finally it is making political figures realise that populism (in pandering some certain groups and areas in not putting in new storage dams in the 1980's) doesn't make good policy. The greater good is a realyl difficult thing to implement!

You asked about the better universities............frankly the PIA is pretty useless in this reagard, they have a lot more work to do in putting together a proper ranking of universities. In NSW, the universities offering planning post-grad courses are

The University of New South Wales www.fbe.unsw.edu.au
This likes to claim it's the premier university for planning in NSW. I doubt that, personally. Their undergrad is 5 years in duration. The post-grad programme is still new.

The University of Sydney www.arch.usyd.edu.au
The planning here is through the Faculty of Architecture. The courses are much more practical than the UNSW ones I've seen, but the timing is very difficult for those of us who work at the same time. I did the first stage of my Master's here last year.

The University of Western Sydney www.uws.edu.au
Unfortunately, UWS is looked down on by most. The courses are generally good, but getting to thei plethora of campuses is difficult.

Other institutions do offer planning-related courses, but these are the main ones in NSW

For the remainder of my Masters I'm completing it at RMIT throught Melbourne www.rmit.edu.au This is the largest post-grad planning programme in Australia, and is available completely on-line, which is how I'm doing it. It's generally practical, and less theoretical, which is a good thing.

Have a look at the University of Queensland www.uq.edu.au Their programme is excellent, but I'm not sure about the modes of delivery. Also the University of Adelaide is good, as is Edith Cowan University in Perth.

*draws breath*

I'll stop now, can you tell I love talking about this stuff? hehe

Hope that's helpful

University places are allocated. Firstly there are those places for Oz citizens, the majority of which are subsidised via a loans scheme (the Commonwealth foots the bill, then takes it out of your pay at tax time, a little each year till it's gone, which is never). Unfortunatley we do have a lot of fee-paying places, most of which go to OS students, and to be honest, has a significant bd effect on academic standards. Due to the capitalist-anything-goes attitude of our government, universities are dependant on fee-paying places to keep the doors open.

While there is some variation from state to state, a high school student typically spends years 11 and 12 trying to get a good mark for university entry (or partying hard then realising it's exam time). This is the VCE in Victorai (Victorian Certificate of Education), the HSC in NSW (Higher School Certificate) and I'm not sure what it's called in SA. This then translates to a standardised score, and you have to get a certain base score to be considered for a course at your chosen uni. For instance, medical courses are restricted to those people who get amazing marks, close to 100, whereas the science degree I first enrolled in had an entry score of 70.

Admissions for undergrads are centralised and students apply with a ranked card of their preferences. There is no direct application to a particular university unless it's for a fee-paying place or for postgrad courses.

Now about jobs.............whats your thoughts and is there much around that you're interested in?

Hope all is well

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
