As we all have heard, the State Highway Department is in the process of spending millions of dollars to install cable in the medians of divided multilane highways in the state in order to make them safer and reduce fatalities. This is a great idea and a very efficient use of taxpayer money. Now, the State Highway Commission has come up with the idea to raise the speed limit to 65 mph on undivided multilane highways in the state, whether they be 4 lane or 5 lane. This would include highways such as 412 east of Springdale to Sonora, 71 south of Greenland to West Fork and 167 south of El Dorado.

This is another example of the Commission being totally out of touch with the the real needs of the state. Why on earth would they want to spend millions to increase safety on one type of road and then decrease safety on another type? Raising the speed limit on undivided multilane roads has been shown to increase fatalities. Such roads are already inherently dangerous by design- you have vehicles passing each other just feet away at high speeds. Why would you want to increase that speed? The argument that drivers are already driving over the speed limit so the limit should be raised is false- if drivers are going 10 miles mph over now they will do the same at the new higher speed limit. 65 mph speeds will become 75 mph and accidents will be more deadly. It almost feels like the Commission sees an average number of fatalties as acceptable and because divided multilanes will be safer with the cables they can afford to let the number of fatalities on undivided multilanes rise- it will average out in the end. I can't imagine that actually is the case- the Commission is just clueless on how administer the state's highway network. It is another reason to do away with the Commssion and let the elected legislators and professionals at the highway department do their jobs.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

News of this came out a little while back. Although mayors of both Fayetteville and Ft Smith have recently been addressing it. Both Fayetteville and Ft Smith will be working together on things like transportation. Makes sense because projects like I-49 will affect both areas. Most of the bigger transportation developments would probably have some sort of affect on each metro. Although you'd think both metros would have already been working together on things like I-49. So I haven't figured out if this is a bit of hype for both candidates. Or if they hadn't really been necessarily been working together on these issues already.

Regional cooperation and all is great but I agree that this is just for publicity. There's not much the individual mayors are going to do that is going to change things- it is just election year and this was a good chance to make a positive appearance in the news.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

True, this certainly isn't his first metal tree-like sculpture. Although the tree does stand out in that particular area. There's a bit of a gap before you have other trees. But if I remember correctly although the sculpture is higher than the surrounding entrance area. I think the forested area further back is up a bit more in elevation. Not to mention some of those real trees are also much taller. So you'd think lightning would be more likely to strike one of those.

thewizard16, on 08 February 2012 - 03:44 AM, said:

I haven't heard what the next temporary exhibit will be after the current Wonder World comes down. But it sounds like in May they will have an exhibit based on the Hudson River School Art movement. The museum already has some nice examples of it. But this exhibit will display art on loan from the New York Historical Society. Personally I'll be looking forward to it. Although it's hard to really pick a favorite art period in the museum for me, this one is certainly up there for me. Although the museum is free, there will be a fee for this temporary exhibit.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Yeah I also really love that sculpture as well. I'd love it if Crystal bridges would get some more sculptures like that. Maybe have like a little grove of them. Although Roxy Paine does do other types of art as well. He has another one in the temporary gallery. It's more along the lines of his more realistic small plant works. It basically looks like a large plot of ground was picked up and set on a table.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I love that statue.

Me too. If I was fantastically wealthy I'd hire Roxy Paine to do sculptures from his Dendroid series down both sides of my driveway.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The meeting about the Broadway Bridge replacement is happening downtown right now, but I wanted to provide the link to the design options and landing page on here for those interested.

Main page:
http://arkansashighways.com/broadwaybridge.aspx

Judging by cost projections, time of construction, and that they've only drawn up renderings for a few options, it looks like cable-stayed is out and the double arch apparently isn't too likely either. Of what they're showing, I think a Plate Girder 1B with some of the finishes from 1A would be the best option if the finishes are nice and architecturally appropriate accent lighting is done. I don't care for the single arch at all, looks too similar to what is there now, and what is there now isn't attractive on the arch end at all.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The Business Journal states that "a well-known, independent restaurant group in Fayetteville is close to moving into" Eddie Haskell"s. Looks like Bowman Hospitality is expanding again. I just hope they don't grow too fast!

You are hearing the same things I am. Very welcomed addition to Benton County.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
