The new North Boulevard Town Square is nearly complete and it is quickly becoming a popular gathering area as visitors flock there on a daily basis.
The DDD has recently installed 3 dog waste bag dispensers and have attached litter grabbers at every trash can in the square. We encourage everyone to please help us keep the new space clean and presentable as it is becoming downtown's premier urban gathering center.
North Boulevard Town Square is going to be planned with much activity in Galvez Plaza and Town Lawn in the coming months. We invite you to visit the square on your lunch break, in the evenings or whenever to enjoy the music as well as the moveable tables and chairs. Check out all the events going on this Spring at our website.

As fundraising efforts continue, BREC and Knock Knock Children’s Museum are holding an open house Tuesday to get public input as they bring the vision for the estimated $14 million project into clearer focus. “We’re going through design development now, which means we’re taking the master plan and the grand vision, and we’re starting to boil it down to what we can do in this first phase,” says Ted Jack, BREC assistant superintendent of planning, operations and resources. “In the master plan there were a lot of options, and what we’re looking for now is a sense of which exhibits and features people feel most strongly about.” Roughly $5 million for the children’s museum has been raised to date, says Kelli Harton, chair of the museum’s board of directors. Jack says $3 million of that is coming from BREC, a partner in the project. Another $365,000 is earmarked for the museum in the state budget, he adds, and additional state funds are also being sought. The museum will be located in the City-Brooks Community Park, on the hill nearest Interstate 10 westbound. The 30,000-square-foot facility will feature 12 to 15 exhibits, with an aim of delivering “extraordinary learning experiences through child-directed play.” Jack says a second open house will be held in the next four to six weeks. Tuesday’s meeting takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at BREC’s administrative offices, 6201 Florida Blvd. For more info on the project, visit its website here.

Developer Tommy Spinosa will go before the East Baton Rouge Parish Planning Commission later this month seeking permission to make a major revision to the concept plan for Rouzan, his traditional neighborhood development off Perkins Road in Southdowns. But while the requested change is considered major because it deals with land use, Spinosa characterizes it as a minor change and "significant improvement" to the project. Spinosa is asking the commission to let him change a portion of the Creekside section of the TND from green space to mixed residential, which will effectively cluster more residential components near Glasgow Avenue in an area of the development that had been earmarked as open green space in the concept plan. The proposed revision is considered major because it involves a land-use change, says Glenn Hanna, planning manager for the East Baton Rouge Parish Planning Department. But Spinosa says the change only affects approximately 1% of the total 120-acre development and is an improvement to the concept plan. "We're not taking anything away. We're simply reallocating a very small section of green space, to put it in the area that makes the most sense to enhance the entire site," Spinosa says. While the proposed revision to Rouzan's concept—or design—plan is considered significant, Hanna confirms it would not change the overall density of the project, nor would it reduce the total amount of green space inside the TND. Rather it would reallocate it to other areas, he says.

The United States Bowling Congress unveiled its finished bowling lanes at the Baton Rouge River Center today, which officials hope will bring an economic gold mine to the city over the next six months. "Forget Indianapolis; the real Super Bowl is in Louisiana in 10 days," says Paul Arrigo, president of the Baton Rouge Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. The USBC Open opens Feb. 11 and will run through July 10. Just as during the tournament's previous stay in Baton Rouge in 2005, the Baton Rouge River Center has been outfitted with 48 lanes, with additional training lanes upstairs. Upgrades for 2012 include a mural featuring blue-tinted photographs of Baton Rouge landmarks, as well as a wall-to-wall LED screen that will display scores, videos and advertising. Banners proclaiming records and notable achievements hang above the lanes. The River Center has seating for up to 600 spectators. Admission to the bowling events is free. "This is a tremendous look," tournament manager Duane Hagen says. "The bowlers will be truly impressed. I've never seen anything like this." Brian Lewis, managing director of tournaments for USBC, expects 60,000 bowlers and a total of 90,000 visitors during the championship, and estimates a total economic impact of between $85 million and $95 million.

Roughly one year after the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority began working with 11 nonprofits to purchase land from them for the proposed Smiley Heights development in Mid City, the authority closed Tuesday on 198 acres for $1.96 million. "It was extremely difficult, as you might imagine, just to acquire the property, considering there were 11 different owners and five different tracts that make up those 200 acres," says Walter Monsour, redevelopment authority president and CEO. "The property owners had to be very cooperative on a number of fronts, and fortunately for us, all of them were excited about our vision for the property." The vision certainly is ambitious. Described as an "urban traditional neighborhood development," Smiley Heights is a mix of education institutions—in partnership with Baton Rouge Community College and the local school district—as well as retail, commercial and residential developments. Eighty-six of the acres are to be preserved as wetlands, with trails for hiking and biking. With the land in hand, Monsour says the redevelopment authority will now begin looking for a master developer for the project. "We will begin working on a request for proposals for a master developer to see how the developers of the world would come in and take our vision and build out the whole property," he says. "I would say we're looking at six to nine months to develop the RFP, get [proposals] returned, evaluate them and begin negotiations."
