Economic Developments Under Way to Make Charleston a Worldwide Fashion Destination

Top designers are setting up have set up shop on King Street, recently named one of the Top 10 shopping streets in America.

Rosanna Krekel, a Lowcountry transplant from New York City, has launched a drive to put Charleston on the map as a fashion destination on par with New York, Paris and Milan.

She's the regional director of Fashion Group International Charleston, a local nonprofit aiming to lure major designers to the city, establish an education component and possibly attract fashion- related business ventures to the Lowcountry.

There are only 36 regions around the world with the Fashion Group International designation. Charleston is one of them.

By joining the group, the Holy City is listed in the worldwide directory and members begin to exchange information.

The city will attract well-versed speakers who can talk on big-picture issues such as retail, beauty and design, further punctuating the city as a place to do business in the fashion world.

With the infrastructure in place, Krekel believes in five years Charleston will be as well known for fashion as it is for food, culture and tourism today.
"What Spoleto has done for the arts here, Charleston could do it with fashion," she said. "I see us one day hosting international conferences. We love, love, love the city. We think it's the closest thing to Europe in America with its beauty and Old World charm."

BAR gave conceptual approval in March to convert the old Rivers Federal Bldg into a 120 room hotel. Last night, the developer went back to the BAR seeking approval for 41 additional rooms for a total of 161 rooms. Also, and I don't know the specifics, but the developer is requesting a height variance. I'm not sure if this is related to the 41 rooms and/or a rooftop lounge area. The developer is Dewberry Capital based in Atlanta. The firm's prinicipal executive and owner, John Dewberry, owns a second home in downtown Charleston. I do not know if the BAR approved the 41 rooms and height variance or not last evening.

Dewberry Capital has updated its website with its hotel conversion project of the old Rivers Federal Bldg. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of this year. The hotel will in fact have a rooftop pool (and spa). I recently read in the P&C that the BAR is still reviewing the exterior treatment of the building in regard to the brick finish.

The Best Friend of Charleston train returning to Charleston:

The City recently released a RFP for the redevelopment of the City-owned East Shed building that is located next to The Children's Museum on the block bounded by King, Meeting, Ann and John Streets. This is a single-story historic building with approx 6,700 sq feet. The RFP in-part stipulates a 20 year lease of the building with the City contributing $1 million towards reconstruction costs. Reconstruction will also include an addition of a glass enclosed exhibit space at the John St. end of the East Shed to display the Best Friend train (currently on loan to Atlanta). The City wants a family-oriented restaurant developed on the Ann St end of the building. A new coutryard will be developed between the East Shed and The Children's Museum where the City is promoting the placement of Phillip Simons art display. Proposals must also include the construction a conference room that can be utilized by the City and CARTA for public transit related meetings. RFP responses are due back to the City by Feb 27 2012.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

A music store sounds nice, especially for King Street but I don't think for that particular space. I think something a little farther north past the Apple store would be better since it would probably fit in better there. The area from Apple to the old Saks is basically just all upscale mall retailers plus Gucci, LV.

I can't remember which block on King St where Fox Music used to be. I do remember I always parked in a lot right behind Fox and used the rear entrance to the store. That was a LONG time ago!

I just threw the idea of a music store out there as a suggestion to add some mix to the retail choices on King. I would be pleased to see a music store return to the peninsula regardless of location.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It is intended to be a new economic development driver for Charleston, created with a slant toward MUSC research and development, but as a place for everyone.
The project with over 4 million square feet of space will include commercial, retail & 800-1000 residences, and no height restrictions...though nothing will probably be taller than 125 feet.
I'm not familiar with H&M though they have a store here in Richmond. I checked their website and they don't a presence in SC right now.

I wouldn't mind seeing a music store return to King St. A music store selling musical instruments like Sam Ash or Guitar Center. Better yet an independently owned store. This is great news and glad to see this project moving forward. It will be interesting to see what hotel brand will be moving into this project.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The Midtown project is set to begin construction soon. This is a good sign that the Charleston economy is recovering from the economic doldrums.

Currently there is some major road work going on in that area. The completion of the Palmetto Parkway, from Ladson Rd to Ashley Phosphate Rd, and another one from Highway 78 over to the Palmetto Parkway. The Palmetto Commerce Park runs along these roads and seems to butt up against or be partly in the Ingleside plot. The Charleston area economy is doing fairly well over all but I'm not sure such a large project would fly yet.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Shortly after Boeing announced it's decision to locate an assembly line at the airport in North Charleston, a consultant was hired to make suggested highway improvements. They came in at about 150 million dollars. I read recently the local governments had put in a 300+ million dollar request to the state infrastructure bank for improvements in the area of the airport. Not much chance of that happening.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
