More convention center drama.. i'm not sure what to think of all this.. i'd hate to lose the Musician's Hall of Fame, especially when the new convention center is not even approved yet!

The Crosland property, about one acre of land with two 19th-century brick buildings at the corner of 12th Avenue South and Laurel Street in the Gulch, was to become a $35 million mixed-use development of 140 apartments and 32,000 square feet of retail space called Griffin Plaza.




Construction was supposed to have been completed by late last year but never got under way. Instead, the developers' bank, Carolina First Bank, is scheduled to sell the land at 11 a.m. Nov. 30 outside the Davidson County Register of Deeds office at Sommet Center.

But Bill Barkley, president of Crosland's Tennessee division, said Carolina First's action wasn't necessarily the death knell for Griffin Plaza.




He said his company is working "diligently for a resolution of this matter, and I would not assume this is over. We would like to develop Griffin Plaza."

Memphi's downtown has been rated as one of the best safest downtowns in all of America. The Sterick Building is in bad shape but with the right vision it could be resurrected. These negative (it won't work in Memphis) attitudes and outlooks are what's holding Memphis back from growing and being a world class city.

According to Metro Finance Director Richard Riebeling, preliminary discussions have centered on three locations: the 11-acre old thermal plant site near the Cumberland River; a stretch of parking lots north of the Tennessee State Capitol where the historic Sulphur Dell baseball field once sat; and along the river’s east bank close to LP Field

“We had a meeting with (Sounds ownership) a few weeks ago to just talk about their interest in the stadium and different locations, but we didn’t leave with any proposal,” Riebeling said. “It was really more concept. There’s still a lot more work to do.”

Somewhat related to the Chattanooga VW plant is the potential Audi expansion. The most recent US figures for Audi indicate a 4% drop in sales while globally their sales are up 4.1% for the year.

I feel this is potentially good news on the future Audi expansion in the US. They are believed to be considering adding a line at the Chattanooga VW plant. (Again the dollar to euro exchange rate makes the US favorable for expansion)

Chattanoog's Riverfront is so nice two events from Georgia have been moved to it. The Head of the 'Hooch Regatta moved to it last year (from the Chattahoochie in Roswell/Atlanta), and Tour de Georgia has a phase that ends there also.

I asked a clerck at the Barrel when they were moving and she said they'd start the new store by next summer if not actually finishing up by then. I got the impression it was a move aimed at getting better traffic situation. Currently, there's no middle lane on Charlotte so left turns block traffic.

I wonder what else could go at the soon-to-be abandoned CB? A car lot?

What do you think about the police precinct station moving out of the park/Nashville West vicinity? Better or worse for the area?

There's already a Cracker Barrel not even a mile down the road on Charlotte off I-40.

I assume that one would close, if this were to happen. It would essentially be moving (just assuming... surely they wouldn't keep both open, being so close together).
