The Usual - Fort Worth - Near Southside

The Usual is a new place opening on Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth's Near Southside urban district (just south of Downtown), which has become the hotbed of Fort Worth's indie urban movement. The brainchild of Brad Hensarling (owner of The Chat Room bar a few blocks to the east), The Usual takes an interesting focus: it's Prohibition-era cocktails in a smoke-free environment.

In the works for two years, The Usual is finally about to open. The photos on Fort Worthology were taken just before the staining of the concrete floors. All of the furniture was not in place, nor was the patio complete.

The design of The Usual comes from the mind of designer Kara Keith, and the project was built by contractor Bill Smith. It has an awesome modern style with a mid-century feel, of the sort that's never really been seen in Fort Worth before. It reminds me of places I saw in Portland, especially the Doug Fir Lounge.

The Usual will have a cocktail menu of around 28 drinks at launch, expanding to over 100 as things progress.

Also, the hotel component is likely to be dropped in favor of 100 more lofts over retail, due to the strong leasing demand seen thus far with the first round of lofts.
First tenants should be opening in October, including Movie Tavern, Tillman's Roadhouse, Paciugo, and Yofe. More in December, including LA Fitness, Bailey's Prime Plus, Patrizio, and Delaney's Irish Pub. Festival lighting in place between the two loft buildings. The lights run between the two buildings for the length of the street, except in the center of the block. There, the buildings set back a bit, creating a sizable plaza space. Leaving the plaza area open overhead gives a kind of “tension and release” feel to the development’s streetscape, with a more cozy sensation between the building walls under the lights opening up to a larger central “room.” It’s a nice, subtle piece of spatial definition.

I just got from Dallas and I was SO impressed. I stayed at the Hilton Anatole and it was beautiful, great service. My conference was at the Sheraton, that was also very nice. My taxi cab drivers were all very kind. The city is kept really clean, at least the places I visited. I went to eat at the House of Blues, Cadillac Bar, Avanti, and more... all my meals were scrumptious! AND that Wells Fargo Building in the first post? I was very uneasy at first, but i now LOVE that building. When you take a really good look at it, it's really unique.. All in all my dallas experience was awesome.

I didn't go to college and I'm trying to raise my kids alone without much money. Everyone talks on here a lot about the really super-rich neighbors and suburbs....is there anywhere that's just decent enough????? I mean like not the most awesome part of town ever but okay enough that I don't have to worry about my children and where they can get a good education??? Sometimes I feel like the whole world is just rich mansions and then like housing projects!!! Isn't there someplace I can work hard and take care of my kids??

Trinity Terrace, who wrapped construction of their new City Tower last year, has had so much success in attracting residents to that building that they've announced a new third tower, their tallest yet. River Tower will be 20 stories in all, with a height of 238 feet. The new tower will be built on the northwest corner of the Trinity Terrace block bounded by Texas, 10th, Penn, and Fournier streets, in Downtown Fort Worth's Upper West Side overlooking the Trinity River. It will go up alongside the original, much older Trinity Terrace tower. It was designed by Portland firm Ankrom Moisan, who also designed City Tower.

Here are some models and renderings, including some views of the completed three-tower block:
