Truthfully, this was my favorite place to grab coffee every morning when I was in SF. I was amazed that it- Sugar- had so many different feelings throughout the day within its customer base; early morning brought the worker crowd; lunch brought trendies; dinner brought the clubbers.

...I believe that "meatmarket-in-a-wall" you call it is some kind of smokehouse erected like a treehouse in someone's backyard on Anza Street near 8th. My lunch partner spotted it moments before I ever saw it as I was studying something else not nearly as extreme. My grandmother used to have a smokehouse in the backyard (bigger than this one of course) to cure meat(s). I've forgotten (really) but think that's what the process was called--curing meat or something; it was a scary-looking place for a kid seeing all those hog corpses hanging from the ceiling in grandma's smokehouse...but that smoked cured bacon was certainly good eating
