the primary scope of this transportation project is in my opinion just slightly too small.

a critical barrier in this city that is at the norther end of this viaduct issue should also get some concideration.

take every example given and then ask yourself what I-84 does directly north of the study area.

it goes from a tunnel to a bridge. this is a huge vertical swing in the highway and it is also the most dangerous part of the raod, or at least it feels the least comfortable.

If we are building a tunnel in any of the last 3 examples, I ask, why dont we stay underground a little longer heading north and bring the highway under the rail lines.

this would free up as much or even more land for development thal all of the rest of the tunnel.

if that doesnt make sense I can post some drawings i made later, but i think that should make plenty of sense.

BACK TO WORK!

Great point! I wonder if they are not doing this because of the sewer lines. I think there are doing some digging in Bushnell park related to that sewer expansion.

I really like reclaiming the land on the corner of Broad street and Farmington. It would be great to see more parkland and a continuous connection to Bushnell park. Think of all the workers on Asylum Hill that would be able to seamlessly enjoy the amenity, instead of being cut-off by I-84.

I'm glad all of these are readdressing the Sisson Avenue interchange. Every time I take that exit, I always think of how it's such a waste of materials and so unnecessarily long.

I vote for the tunnel option (with the addition of going under the RR tracks. What a great way to get the economy moving.

And Finally, I think that Hartford should only have 1 highway going throuhg it, and that should be I-84. I think we should relocate 91 to go across the Charter Oak Bridge, connect with Route 2 and run up through East Hartford, eventually recrossing the CT River North of Hartford by the meadows.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I prefer the boulevard as well. I don't think we want future generations to have to keep paying for a tunneling quagmire. Hartford really needs one highway going through it right now, not two. And the city will still be accessible from all points since I-84 will still bring people to the city center, just not through it anymore. The worst plan, though, is to redo the viaduct. Why repeat a mistake?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

FYI for my friends at UrbanPlanet - The Tech Center (and Hartford at large!) are going coast to coast in HD tonight! March 4, at 8 PM eastern, we are going to be on History Channel's Modern Marvels, showcasing how materials are reused from a demo site such as ours into things you use every day. They should have some pretty good shots of the last gasps of the Broadcast House, and of Hartford in general.

Quote

The last major office building to sell in the city's central business district was another two-towered office building at 100 Pearl St. in 2008. New Boston Fund sold that building for $18 million, or $64 a square foot, about half of the $32.7 million New Boston paid in 1999. The building had a 35 percent occupancy at the time.

Financing commercial real estate purchases remains difficult, though some investors are beginning to get back into the market.

Still, if someone can pay cash, there potentially could be "a big upside" in the purchase, if the right tenant or tenants can be found, said Dale Reese, a senior Connecticut executive at New Boston.

But a strong stomach will be required, given that available office space in Greater Hartford increased to 21.2 percent as of Dec. 31, up from 18.2 percent a year ago, according to CB Richard Ellis.

A recent CB Richard Ellis forecast calls for another increase this year, to 23 percent.

I am thinking only bottom fishers will be at the auction, I just hope the new owner will not be someone like the so called developer who owned the butt ugly and the Capitol West building or that new age guru dude who runs a nice hotel in Constitution Plaza.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The 84 Viaduct Study Committee released a powerpoint not long ago with overviews of the various scenarios they are considering. I figured I would post them here so we could discuss what we think of them.

Viaduct Rebuild:

Tunnel/Viaduct Combo:

Tunnel (1):

Tunnel (2):

My take is that I like the Boulevard choice best. I think that it would probably be the cheapest option, which is an import consideration. I also really like the intersection that it would create with Asylum Street. I think in that scenario, the lot west of Union Station would become a tremendous location for a signature development. I also like that it would create more real estate with direct frontage on Bushnell Park. Those parcels would be ideal for residential development. If they ever got built, along with the stalled YMCA project and something on the Parkview Hilton site, we would have a great residential cluster around the park.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

It just does not make one bit of sense to pursue the busway now that we have a mass transit/ rail oriented administration in Washington. We need to get everything we can get while we can get it. There is a good chance we can upgrade our rail infrastructure at this point in time all across the state and it would truly be a waste of money and opportunity to throw away a good rail line in favor of a busway.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

it is nice to see the elected, and the hopefull elected all generally falling on the same side of the fence for once. the right side.

It is so absolutely obvious how limiting of a plan the busway is.

I only worry that someone will find some reason not to get the rail way built.

But DAYUM. if you look back a few pages at the maps I put together and the pupulations of the communities served, its downright insanity to go any other way.

the regional rail would look really good with the commuter rail and the waterbury line.

I honestly feel that the next priority after that would be a light rail serving the inner suburbs and associated commercial centers or points of interest. By this I mean West Hartford Center, Downtown hartford, Rentschler Field, The Meadows Music Center yada yada yada.

and after that maybe middletown to Simsbury, but really, with the two projects on the books, this region would become so much more than it is at present.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Maybe I spoke too soon. It seems like everyone running for office is now lining up to kill the Busway and get working on Waterbury to Hartford rail. I think we here at UP Hartford do deserve some credit for helping to build momentum for this conversation to happen. It needs to happen and the only thing I will say is that the rail option honestly is a must. It has to be built at some point so lets use the busway money and get going.
BRISTOL — Adding to the growing campaign trail skepticism about the proposed $573 million busway between Hartford and New Britain, Democratic gubernatorial contender Dan Malloy said this week that he might side with critics who prefer a commuter rail line instead.

Malloy said the decision to leave Bristol out of the busway “is really inexplicable.”

The former Stamford mayor said he wants to see a railroad that would run from Waterbury to Bristol to Hartford — and beyond.

It is already too late to stop the Busway. I take that back. Based on what Lamont had to say he may be the only chance at stopping it and actually getting us to look at a real East-West rail corridor for Central CT.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Ya Knkw what?

I didnt think of it that way. I was thinking that the environmental studies slowed down the other rail line, so they were being proactive, but you might be right. the DOT likely allready got its kickbacks on this busway, and they need to deliver on promised money

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I think that transportation is the biggest priority for CT right now and that housing and entertainment are number 2 and 3 in terms of growth potential. We need a rail network that connects Bradley with Downtown Hartford, Yale, UConn, and the casinos. It is very doable in my opinion if that is the end goal and we work towards it. Dense Housing, both Luxury and Moderate Income must be encouraged especially near the future transit hubs of the state. Also we need to see the creation of special entertainment districts where different alcohol rules and tax structures could apply. Making it possible to jump start CT night life in the urban cores of Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Stamford, Norwich, and New London. (Norwich and New London could be our versions of the Las Vegas strip if developed correctly.) I will vote for whomever I feel will best put forth this type of agenda for a 21st Century CT.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I'm in agreement with beerbeer, Lamont, in my opinion, doesn't have the correct point of view to lead the State. I do appreciate his zest for rail/mass transit, that would probably be the only saving grace for me if he gets elected.

And I wouldn't categorize Linda McMahon as a bored housewife, she was the CEO of the WWE and I can imagine that being an incredibly time consuming position. That being said, I'm having a hard time gauging her sincerity, so far she's a talking head so I'm not sure how much substance she has.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

The Knights is the only viable choice on that list, the rest are horrible. You can also manually enter a name, so those aren't the ONLY 4, just the choices they gave you. Also, one of those names, the Yankees, violates their own rule of no name that is currently used by an existing professional sports team.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
