i get the feeling from the 7.5 acres bought and the 750,000 square feet. i did a calculation of 750000/40000 and it comes out to roughly 18 acres worth of office space. so those "acres" stacked on top of eachother minus the parking garage and whatever green space they have will be the buildings. we wont know anything until a specific plan is written up. i just hope the keep the buildings up to the sidewalk and not set way back. This should be a new community, not an office park

Even by those numbers though, the building would have to be three stories tall without including the parking garage, which would probably bump it up to at least five or six covering the whole span of the land. That doesn't sound so bad to me, considering what's currently there. Anyway, I don't mind if new offices take root in this area before housing does because I feel the demand for living in this area has to be built up, and office construction at least gives the neighborhood an "up and coming" feel which helps promote the idea of living there.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I just read this article in projo today and thought about the style of development that will fill the new land. My biggest fear is that large swathes will be bought up by a limited ammount of people who will embrace more of a suburban style of building right in downtown. This is unfortunate. Then again, this is just my speculation because there isnt too much info yet.
Curt Schilling talks about upcoming move to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Red Sox star Curt Schilling, CEO of video-game company 38 Studios LLC, said his team is "incredibly excited" about its impending move to Providence. Schilling, in San Francisco for a game developers conference, spoke briefly to the blog Joystiq.

"It's our building! We have all six floors. -- it's our studio and we're alone. It's our space," he said. "Gavin [Whishaw] -- the studio GM -- and I, we really took a Disney approach. There's no detail too small for us in the new studio to make it a place where people walk in and say 'I wanna work there.' "

38 Studios is scheduled to move into its new headquarters at One Empire Plaza in downtown Providence May 1.

Details about the company's first game, "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" are scant. Gamers will have a chance to learn more when 38 Studios presents the first public demo of the game March 11 at Pax East, a three-day gaming festival in Boston.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

From what I've heard, there are like 400 people looking to move to the Providence area from this company, and they are being offered relocation packages... sounds pretty good - I hope the company does well and stays in PVD, it could be great for the city.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Il Centro to open in Westin at Agora’s

The Westin Providence is getting a new restaurant as the owner of a South Kingstown eatery will take over the hotel’s Agora restaurant.

Dino Passaretta, owner of Liliana’s on Tower Hill Road, will open Il Centro this fall in the second-floor space once occupied by Agora.

The opening will be a return to the Providence restaurant scene for Passaretta, a city native.

He last owned a restaurant in the city — Moda — which closed about four years ago. He opened Liliana’s in the spring of 2007.

Ralph Izzi, spokesman for The Procaccianti Group, which owns the Westin, said the company decided to lease the space to an independent operator, as it does with Fleming’s on the first floor.

“It’s a successful model,” he said.
The Hampton Inn & Suites Providence Downtown has been recognized by Hilton Worldwide with its national Best Conversion Award for the transformation of the former Old Colony Bank in downtown Providence into a 110-room boutique hotel.

The $20-million project, a joint-venture between First Bristol Corp., run by James Karam, and Granoff Associates, was designed by Newport Collaborative Architects. The hotel opened in April 2009. The building at 58 Weybosset St. was originally constructed in 1926.

Well, now I know.. These people will stop at nothing to destroy this city. Illegally taking away the homestead "exemption"? I can honestly say that even I didn't think these thieves would stoop this low.

It will be overturned, but how can anyone in their right mind support this government after this? On one hand they jack taxes up in gigantic times of need. They don't even CONSIDER cutting spending, and the very people that their illegal tax levy will effect are poor multifamily residences..

Sad to say, most non-owner occ buildings are in low income areas. Just a fact of life. So since the values in these areas were destroyed during the meltdown, the city decided to make up their budget shortfall by taxing evil cold, dead fish hands landlords in low income areas.. A proper villain, correct? Everybody hates the landlord.. The Coup has an album called Kill My Landlord. The Police & Sting, same thing (just minus the egregious violence)..

But the truth is, it will be a pass through cost borne by the very people these "democrats" in office act to serve, the poor and working poor.. First, the tax levy will be a direct cause of an increase in rents.. That's self explanatory.. But secondly, it will increase the dilapitation of properties in these areas.. Can't raise rent, no blood from stone? Let the property go. Paint the trim? Can't do it, taxes too high.. Pave driveway? No funds.. And of course, worst case, pay mortgage? Why when taxes are 7k per year? I'm working to pay the taxes, and my former "profit" is solely going to pay taxes of which evil LL receives no services..

So nice work, Finance Committee & City Council.. Well done.. You thought no one would notice if you tax the evil landlord.. But we are stronger than you think. We are armed with information.. We can tell the truth, that this levy will directly and indirectly make the lives of the residents of Providence's lower income hoods markedly worse..

Nice try though.. You thought you could sneak it through with little to no opposition.. I admire the plan, levy the villain, sneak it through.. Tell the rest of the city that these profiteers have went unchecked for too long, and this is untapped revenue..

But the truth is, you did your property assessments.. You found that the vast majority of 33% non-owner occs were in the areas where price depreciation was ~55%+.. You saw an opportunity to recoup this cost.. And The Villain, is landlords.. But it backfired.. Because the real people you targeted, were the low income backbone and soul of the city.. Disgusting that a democratic government would seek to destroy the QOL of its very voter base through deception and 3 card Monte.. Vote 'em out, they aren't who you think they are.. Unlike Denny Green.............
Hello, I am wondering if anyone has any updated information or news concerning skyscraper development in Providence such as The Empire at Broadway or One Ten Westminster or anything else thank you.

The Empire at Broadway is still listed on the Procaccinni Web site as a development in progress. they also list the Fogarty Building as a future project.

My guess for the next skyscrapper might be the Villa del Torre on Federal Hill. All of the zoning was completed for this project and the developer owns the land already. Not sure about neighborhood opposition.

I would be surprised if anything large was to happen in Providence until the economy turns around.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Ok, My last post was back in 2009. Since I have been so critical of the direction the improvments went in I wanted to post a follow up here.

Here is the question... How do you see the Dunk doing now that the improvments to the arena are old news. Has it been a success? Or not?

I am curious how folks here see it. I will post my answer later....

I would say the improvements have been viewed as a sucess. It does make the building a lot easier to get into and move around in. The recent NCAA Basketball event was viewed as a great success and supposedly it is being looked at as a sight for the expanded tournament starting in 2011 (next year).

Everything came together nicely that weekend to show off the city and it's possibilites but without the new Dunk it wouldn't have had a shot to hold the games.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
