Evansville is a nice and interesting city. It has a very nice downtown with a couple of mid-rise towers, but mainly low-rise buildings dominate. It has one of the more impressive courthouses in the state, but that's subjective, esp. in a state where it seems like every county has a pretty impressive stone courthouse of substantial architectural design. The city appears from what I read to have a pretty healthy economy, pretty fair city governance, and a impressive young and up-coming mayor.

Interesting side note: The city has the 3rd oldest baseball stadium in continuous use in the country, Bosse Field. The Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League play there, which is not affiliated with MLB.

I bet that is true. I have never seen any pictures of downton prior to the 70s so I would not know but it has that feel. Standing on the street you feel rather disconnected from everything. However, there are some good points and it is not too depressing just boring, so you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to go. I have not been to the new Studebaker museum but I would like to go eventually.

Here is another article about downtown South Bend and how the DDA is spending money to make the downtown more pedestrian friendly. Alright, I cannot link to the article because IE is messing with me. I will come back and post it later.

Kentucky has had a similar falling off, both are states that have active established communities on other boards, it may just be those boards at this time continue to be the preferred venues. Basically all it would take would be 3 or 4 dedicated forumers in either state to get things going, but until we find those dedicated folks it may be slow going as more passive forumers tend to fall off if regular discussion is not taking place and content is not being driven. It will happen though, we just have to be patient with folks discovering UP and finding it a furtile ground to discuss their views and news on local developments.

The extension is exciting to think about and they have been talking about it for a long time now. It will be good once they actually begin construction and development of the lines. I can imagine that it will be quite the boosts for both Valparaiso and Lowell. I did however just read an article about how the expansion will make it harder for the other trains coming from MC or South Bend because of capacity problems but that may just be people trying to protect the other route. I cannot remeber where that article was though. As far as I am concerned, any increase in the rail network of Chicago is good. Especially when it is well funded.

Maybe I was a little negative when I wrote the post and the title. I love the South Shore. It is great and cheap. It costs ten dollars more for a one way ticket from my home to Chicago than it does for a round trip during rush hour from Michigan City. The new stations are great and the on time performance is better than any other trains I have been on. I am amazed though at the amount of passenger growth that has occured since I began riding the train while I was in high school. Of course every time they raise the prices I still complain about it but as long as a round trip ticket is less than 20 dollars, it is the best way to go to downtown Chicago from Indiana. I mostly wanted to start a discussion about the line and the planned expansions (which I am excited about and concerned but we shall see) more than anything else.

I take the South Shore line quite a bit since I work a lot in Chicago but live most of the time in SW Michigan and I was reading about the Gary mayor changing his mind on combining the Downtown Metro center stop and the Miller Beach stop. So I thought it was a good time to discuss the future of the line. So you can talk about the expansion projects or just every day operation.

Personally, I cannot believe how crowded the trains are. Especially the rush hour trains but even weekend trains are often packed. I would like to see capacity improvements myself and I would be all for the consolidation of stops. Of course the real problems occur when the trains cross over to metra tracks and it takes for ever to go just a few miles. Increasing the speed would be great but I think it would be too much money especially since it would be metra tracks. Also, Millenium Station is gorgeous. I always assumed that the station would be under construction forever but it really has turned out great. I really like the look of the other new stations too. I am sure some people out there want better parking, so discuss what you like and do not like about the service.

I had not heard it was having such bad financial issues lately; but had read where the county was trying to get the inter-modal facility, which would be a great economic asset for county if established. Hopefully it will be. There is a lot of potential for NWIN IMO if things are planned and developed properly in the coming years, as a significant portion of the tertiary economic growth from Chicago seems destined to increasingly push over into the Indiana side of the metro area.

Welcome to the forum frank! Glad to have a NWIN member on the boards! Look forward to hopefully more posts from you about whats going on up there in the Calumet region.

LaPorte County has too much lake effect snow for me. I hope things go smoothly and development will happen in NWIn in the future but all of the cities along the lake shore have some really large hurdles to get over before anything happens. I am always suprised at how places like Hammond, East Chicago, Gary, and Michigan City look run down and univiting. Hopefully with continued development in the South Loop and the opening of all I-94 lanes, the area will improve.

It will definitely have a huge positive benefit for Greensburg and the region, as it could potentially employ more workers than expected as has been the case with Toyota plant in Princeton, Indiana - plus support plants may locate in the region to service the assembly facility. I drove by there, again, last night on my way home from Indy (grandkids) to Georgetown, KY where we have a very large Toyota plant that has grown our town and surrounding area by 1000% in the last years since it has been here.

I don't live in Indiana, but happened to drive from Indy to Cincinnati yesterday on I-74. Massive building project on the south side of the interstate near Greensburg. Even looks like a new interchange is being put in. I didn't see any signs saying what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
