As for the live concerts- I'm all for it. I think that's a great idea, and a great location. With two bars on either side of the dock/stage area and both that have outdoor seating it should be a hit. I know that I personally love to sit outside at a restaurant while listening to live music.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I like the Garfield's at westgate, but hardly ever eat there, because they either don't have a great ventelation system or their smoking area is just too large. the entire restaurant smells like smoke and while it doesn't bother me too much, my wife and small child just can't take it.

Overall, I enjoy shopping at the mall (not that I like to shop period). I like having Dick's and Bed Bath and Beyond connected as well as having an outside entrance.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I don't know what restaurants are in the mall, but there used to be a Garfield's Grill (or something like that). It was standard chain restaurant food as I recall. While I'm not much for chain restaurants, I've always thought Spartanburg should have a Chili's or TGI Fridays. Those are pretty standard restaurants. In fact, we have an entire thread about the "stuff" (restaurants/retail) Spartanburg doesn't have but should.

Valid point about Columbia Place and demos/location. However, VAS did cut in to them, it is sort of mall-like, store-wise. They took Penney's, etc from there. Most cities the sizes of the larger ones in SC can only support one healthy mall these days. Cola. is over-malled. Of 4, only 1 does really well. Columbia Place is doomed, IMO. I don't see Macy's there much longer which is really the only draw. Maybe I'm wrong.

Back to Westgate - I noticed Garfield's, but wasn't sure what it was. Wasn't there another one? At one of the entrances I thought I saw an empty restaurant space. Would make for another nice sit-down casual restaurant.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Westgate having stores like Costco, Dick's and BB&B help them compete with the Lifestyle Centers, I think. The movie theater appears to be a big draw, too, as well as four solid anchor tenants which all looked to be doing well. I do not think they will fall victim to a lifestyle center anytime soon (unlike, say, Columbia Place which is not doing well....Village @ Sandhill?).

The only thing I noticed that Westgate could use is a nice, sit down chain restaurant. I saw something in the food court but don't know what it is like. Looked like there was a restaurant there at some point but it closed recently. Haywood is bigger, but the only things it really has over Westgate is a Macy's, more high-end/upscale offerings, and a more recent appearance. If shoppers in the above mentioned counties aren't after any of those, they likely don't have any use to go over there. I wouldn't. Both malls have the same stores I shop at (save for a couple), I shop them frequently. CBL doesn't do upscale malls, but I should have added, they keep them up well from what I've seen.

As a side note, I was really loving the detached Sears auto center. They stopped doing them that way after the mid 1970s and built them attached to the store. I swear that Sears is bigger than the one at Haywood. I saw the bottom floor and was like, "OK"...then I saw escalators. Wow.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

To my knowledge when they first opened they advertised as non-smoking inside the entire resturaunt. This weekend people where smoking at the bar as well as the at the tall tables at the TVs. The place is wide open, so in my opinion there is no way to have a true smoking section. Having a smoking section does not prevent the health hazards of second-hand smoke. Last time I ate at Billy Ds I could still smell the smoke even though they have a partition at the bar. This is the southeast, go outside and smoke, it aint that cold.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

WestGate is the 5th largest in the state, sitting at just below a million square feet. Haywood is #1, Citadel (Chas) is #2, Columbia Place is #3, Coastal Grand (MYB) is #4. However, that is a pretty big mall to be in a city the size of Spartanburg and given the proximity to Haywood which probably draws more of a regional clientele.

I like the white interior with the palm trees more than the earth tone thing that seems to be so popular. It gives a brighter, more open feel. It may need a refurb, but I wouldn't change the interior. I like it. That is surprising that the mall lost Gap - seems they would have at least downgraded it to a clearance store like they did in Aiken before that store closed. I think they have some pretty good stores and the mall was busy. It suits the area well enough. Remember, too, it's a CBL mall, and CBL doesn't usually do upscale like Simon, GGP, etc.

Another thought, since the Proffitt's was apparently the newest anchor store from what I read here, it's surprising that Belk didn't move in to that store and close the store they're in, as it looks like it was from the 70s.

I'm not much of a shopper - only when I need something do I visit stores and malls - but I seriously shopped at Westgate for the first time in more than two years last month. Much to my surprise the mall was very clean, the place seemed busy with shoppers, and the number of vacancies did not alarm me as I was expecting many more.

I think Costco and Hamricks(even though they are not attached to the mall) and the mall's attractiveness and location have helped keep Westgate viable during the recession and the current retailer shakeout. Some say that enclosed malls will soon be a thing of the past as Americans are changing the way they shop and spend their free time. That may be true but I didn't see any evidence of that the day I visited Westgate.

Yes, Haywood is bigger - blah, blah, blah - I've heard that for thirty years. But I think the management at Westgate is doing a pretty good job maintaining the place and keeping it relevant by adapting to the times and not relying on the same old formula of four department stores, a cinema, and a food court. While Haywood may draw more "regional" shoppers I've always been surprised at the number of cars parked at Westgate with North Carolina license plates.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=51269&view=findpost&p=1107714

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=51269&view=findpost&p=1107714

Recently purchased the book "Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport: Upstate South Carolina's Gateway to the World. a History" by Dave Partridge. A terrific read about the history of the airport and the men who got it built. There's a lot of fascinating upstate history in the book too. Dave Partridge is a Greenville resident and, for those of us old enough to remember, a well-liked news anchor for Channel 4 back when it was WFBC-TV.

Partridge has interviewed most of they key players and has done a wonderful job researching the airport's time line from concept to construction to grand opening. In the process he has debunked a lot of the myths and "conspiracy theories" that I've heard from my Greenville friends [and a few Spartanburg friends too] over the years. They constantly berate me about the "heavy-handed" way the Spartanburg delegation pushed the Greer site over a more favorable [and closer to] Greenville site. They also insist that the airport was a Greenville idea and that Spartanburg was against the concept from the beginning.

Below is what I learned:

Roger Milliken, while believing that a regional airport was critical to the long-term economic viability of the upstate, was not one of the airport's initial visionaries. In fact, the real visionary was legendary aviator and World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker, who voiced the need for an upstate regional airport while speaking at a luncheon held at Greenville's Poinsett Hotel in 1945.

Even approaching middle age Milliken was afraid to fly and, before moving his company headquarters from New York to Spartanburg, traveled by train. He was approached by his friend, Greenville businessman Charles Daniel, to champion the airport. Milliken enthusiastically accepted and has been the airport's driving force since.

Charles Daniel, founder of Greenville's Daniel Construction Company and a key driver behind the airport, too was afraid to fly. Well after his company became a global general contractor did he purchase a company plane in 1956. But like Milliken, he believed that a regional airport was critical to the future of the upstate. In a strange turn of events, Daniel Construction Company lost the bid to build the airport. Greenville's Suitt Construction Company won the bid.

Milliken's relationship with the city of Greenville was much closer than I thought. Before relocating his company to Spartanburg he stayed in the Poinsett Hotel when he visited his plants, most of them located in Spartanburg County.

The site eventually chosen for the airport (south of Greer and north of Pelham and yes, mostly in Spartanburg County) was picked by the president of Greenville's Piedmont Engineering, not by a cabal of Spartanburg [or Greenville] industrialists. He chose this site for several reasons: (1) it was 900 feet above sea level with good visibility in all directions, (2) prevailing winds favored the alignment of the proposed runway, (3) the site was mostly rural and required little relocation of people, homes, businesses, and roads, (4) it was approximately halfway between Greenville and Spartanburg, (5) it was adjacent to the new Interstate 85, and (6) there was plenty of land for future expansion.

Donaldson Air Force Base, by the late 1950's slated to close by the Pentagon, was considered for the airport. In fact, several Greenville business and political leaders aggressively advocated it becoming the new regional airport even after the Greer site was chosen. The airport commission, which included Messrs. Daniel and Milliken, commissioned Leigh Fisher and Associates, a respected San Francisco based airport consulting firm to weigh the pros and cons of the Donaldson site and [re]evaluate the already chosen site south of Greer. Leigh Fisher's report, released in early 1961, strongly endorsed the Greer site and recommended against Donaldson. The Donaldson location, said the report, was obviously not convenient to Spartanburg, would require millions of dollars of infrastructure upgrades, and it's connection to Interstate 85 would not be ideal. Moreover, the air force could take it back over. That would seem unlikely today but in the late 50's and early 60's conflict between the US and the Soviet Union was a real possibility and the air force had taken back control of other former bases during that era.

Local political and business leaders from both Greenville and Spartanburg enthusiastically supported the regional airport although it could have meant their local airports, which much had been invested, might lose business and eventually close. The manager of Spartanburg's' airport, Buck Moss, told the Spartanburg Herald that he supported the airport and believed that general aviation traffic at his airport would increase. Local media, including both Greenville and Spartanburg newspapers welcomed the new airport and kept their readers updated and informed on construction progress.

Nowhere in Partridge's book is there mention of a Spartanburg elected official, businessman, or resident questioning the need, the location, or the cost of the airport.

The level of cooperation between the two cities was remarkable. City, county, and state delegations met often to discuss the project and never was there any serious disagreements. Never before or perhaps since have Greenville and Spartanburg worked together so closely.

The quality and quantity of airline service was a problem even when the airport opened in 1962. Only Eastern and Southern Airlines served the airport in it's early days and jet service to the "jetport" did not begin until 1965. Airline service has ebbed and flowed over the years but passenger traffic has steadily increased.

The airport's first director was the director of Greenville's Municipal Airport, a decision supported by the entire airport commission.

The airport commission, created by state law in 1958, consists of six members. Three from Greenville County, three from Spartanburg County.

Finally, the airport opened on schedule and on budget. And, yours truly attended the dedication ceremonies in 1962 although I was too young to know what to think of it all.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Please read my post again. Dudley's opened as non-smoking, but is now smoke friendly. As a cancer survior, as well as my wife I look for non-smoking bars and resturaunts. Where I lived in Georgia the area has been smoke-free for about 10 years. Guess I have to move to a more progressive place like Sumter, (yes Sumter) to not worry about second-hand smoke. I would be happy with a law that bans smoking for any resturant that allows people under 21. That way places like Lil'ds and the cigar bar can have smoking. You might want to check out the health hazards of second-hand smoke.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

I think you'll get a lot of varying opinions about it though. It serves its purpose well enough, but some of us want it to be a little more. Being located so close to Haywood Mall hurts Westgate a little. The quantity and quality of products they send to the department stores is a little lower than Haywood, so sometimes it can be hard to find what you want. And while I suspect the economy may be a culprit with the vacancies, the mall still lost the GAP. While I'm not much for their clothes it's a pretty basic store that you'd think any mall in America could support.

It was last remodeled when they expanded it in the mid 90s. I want to say it was around 1996 or 1997. I have only vague memories of the old movie theater that used to be behind it. Haywood was just remodeled a few years ago, so it's definitely going to look older by comparison. The general look and feel of Westgate is fine IMO. I guess the trend in malls is to add more faux-hardwood, but I'd rather it look like an egyptian hotel lobby.

Since they built Costco and removed the JB White/Proffits building the mall is technically smaller than it used to be. At one point it had the same square footage as Haywood, and as a result Westgate and Haywood were tied for the largest malls in South Carolina. I'm assuming Westgate is down to the #2 or #3 spot now.

Hopefully someone can help me out with this, but I swear that the spot where Dick's and Bed Bath & Beyond is located used to be one store, but I can't recall what it was.

Here's a link to some facts about the mall, including a demographics report which is sort of interesting. They outline and analyze the trade area of the mall.

Thanks for the responses all!

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

There isn't really a formal entrance to the park currently, so at paid events, like Red White & Boom, they just set up a table in front of the entrance by the statue and interactive fountain (the current "main entrance"). I think the new ticket plaza will allow the park to have a more formal entrance for paid events. Hopefully we can draw some bigger-name performers with these improvements. Of course, the stage itself still needs expansion...
Here is a link to some of the plans for the ticket booth and restroom additions. I recommend the "Architecture" and "Civil" sections for a good idea of the project.

I found another article on the VCOM campus that I ignored initially because I thought it was one that I already read

VCOM is going to partner with Wofford to use their recreational and dining facilities. I think this relationship is important for many reasons. Obviously the students will benefit, but the proximity of the two schools on College Street could lend itself to some physical changes too. The article mentions VCOM becoming a catalyst for revitalizing that neighborhood, and along those lines I think College St would be a logical location for some student housing. Maybe even some student-oriented restaurants and shops. Obviously this is a long term vision on my part.

This whole college town theme is really working well for the city.

In other news, the newest rendering of the building is slightly different, and a little less attractive. It's still a sharp looking build over all though. I'm glad that something of good architectural value is being built by someone other than George Dean Johnson.

Being the "mall rat" I am, and not living that far, I decided to pay a visit to Westgate Mall for the first time today. I was pretty impressed - it is an older mall but has been kept up well from what I could see. I like the idea of stores like BBY and Dick's in malls. The department stores seemed pretty nice. I did notice a decent number of vacancies (edit to add, around 10-15), but given the economy, I guess that is a given. When was this mall last remodeled? It opened in '75, so I'm sure it has had several renovations. The interior's basic (palms are a nice touch), it's hard to tell. The facades on the stores looked older than the ones at Haywood, so I'm guessing it's been a while but it's still in good shape.
Nice mall you have in Spartanburg overall! Looks like it serves the area well by size. Any thoughts on it?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]
