I was surprised to see the parking deck in the stage it was in! Didn't get to see much else of campus construction though.

During my daily readings this morning, I stumbled on this article that mentions Blacksburg among other smaller metros in the country:

This article from the Times yesterday is a little concerning if you are a supporter of an amphitheater in the area. I'm a fan of the river site, and I think Red Light would be great to manage the project. They've done a great job in Charlottesville and I would think if they could offer a double shot of Roanoke and Charlottesville to acts, they'd be able to get even more acts to come to town.

Hopefully this project will move forward. I think it could be a terrific asset to the Valley.

No promoter will ever book the same band in Roanoke and Charlottesville back to back. These markets are too close to make this feasible. One concert would decrease attendance at the other. Keep in mind that the Roanoke and Charlottesville markets are quite small. For concerts to financially work, they need to draw from a 100 mile radius and that would split the Lynchburg market. BTW most promoters of national concerts require a radius clause for just such a reason. Bottomline the notion that Red Light Management will be able to get great deals on bands becasue they can offer them Roanoke and Charlottesville dates, just isn't reality.

Thanks, Ronsmytheiii, for reviving the Roanoke Pictures thread.. I wish someone would post a series of pix of the new art museum.

As in most mid-sized cities the streets look pretty desolate on weekends. I suspect the closure of Mill Mountain Playhouse has had an an effect on activity in the Market area.

Well part of AJ is roped off with a couple of down hand cranked cranes at the top which I see every day from D2, havent been out to ICAST II regularly as it is in the research area, but the other places are complete. Havent heard anything about the parking garage construction, last time I saw the area was tailgating for the Marshall game (no groundbreaking yet)

So sad. It was a beautiful store that never caught on with Roanokers. The sad part is that they finally got the Walgreens open to compliment it just this past month. :-(

Great thread idea, had been wanting to start one when I was there, especially one for the town of Blacksburg. I graduated in May, but have come back multiple times since my lease ran out in late June and I am still strongly attached to the town I lived in for the last four years. Wish I had found a job there and stayed local for a bit longer, as I wasn't ready to leave so soon.

I'm particularly interested in Blacksburg's master plan for downtown, more pedestrian friendly plans, such as roundabouts at Prices Fork & Main and also at VPI Mall & Main. Check out the drafts on the town's website, I haven't checked back for anything new in months, but I will be a regular at this thread. Living in Blacksburg was such an inspiration for city/town planning and I really admire the fact that you do not need to drive in that town, EVER. I had a car, but I biked to class from Foxridge and biked everywhere else I needed to go. Coupled with the bicycling and walking benefits of a small university town, the BT bus system is also there to cover more ground, especially on downtown crusades! I'm aware of all the projects you have listed, espcially the new ICTAS, because it's near where I frequently drop off cardboard/paper for recycling. Definitely keep us up to date with all the happenings in Blacksburg and on campus, pictures appreciated definitely! I'll add you on Flickr when I get home from this government computer, haha.
