Yesterday's Dallas Morning News featured a report by a land use strategist, Christopher B. Leinberger, who praised Dallas as a leader in the development of walkable urban centers. The article is here: Dallas a model for 'walkable' urban centers. A great quote from the article:

But that led me to look at more of Leinberger's work, including this press release: Is Urbanism the New American Dream?. One interesting quote:

What the critics of HRT's Light Rail fail to see, is how safe, efficient and comfortable mass transit is the backbone for these walkable urban centers. Town Center is obviously one -- downtown could be another. The EVMS area could be another, if more housing is built in Fort Norfolk. This is the vision we need to insist upon in HR -- not ever more sprawl. Interested in how others see this.

Leinberger's web site is here: The Option of Urbanism

Is sprawl even an option at this point? What land exists in Hampton Roads for sprawl?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

West Virginia is an illegal state. No offense intended. It was created by President Lincoln without the permission of the legitimate and elected government in Richmond. It was a move to reduce the power of Virginia and the Confederacy. I think that a reunification would be appropriate for the eastern counties of West Virginia who never voted to seceed from the mother state originally. Greenbriar County is one that comes to mind, but pretty much all the eastern counties were loyal to Virginia. So I would be in favor of re-absorbing the counties who belong with East Virginia. They tend to be more southern oriented and conservative.

I know this is 6 years old, but you REALLY need to brush up on your history. Lincoln did not create West Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia in 1860 was very much divided, A third of the state (what is now WV) did not agree with the other two-thirds (Va) about subjects such as slavery and secession. The location of where WV is was very vulnerable to the Union and the citizens of the north-western part of the state feared they would be the first attacked by the Union. After the majority of the states of the Confederacy seceded, Virginia joined a year later after the attack on Fort Sumter, SC. Fearing an invasion by the Union, and not seeing eye to eye with the rest of the state, West Virginia seceded from Virginia in 1861 and it was approved by Congress, not Lincoln.

West Virginia would NOT give up their statehood to join Virginia again. That is purely foolish.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

Krazeeboi, I just noticed this entry.

If you go to the Richmond Development thread and check postings on February 3rd, 4th and 6th (presently on page 145 of that thread) you'll see that the decennial census results for Metro Richmond are posted. The entry on Feb. 6th reveals figures for the state and, especially, the urban crescent from Nova via Richmond to Hampton Roads.

I probably should have started a new topic titled "2011 Virginia Census Figures" because nobody seemed interested enough to comment.

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

September update:

Quote

Development at the Wallops Island launch site continues at a brisk pace. The Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF), where Taurus II will be assembled and mated with the payload, is totally under roof. At Pad 0A, tons of concrete are being poured to finish the launch pad structure and flame trench. The main Liquid Oxygen (LOX) storage tank completed a three-month-long journey from its manufacturing facility in Mexico and was installed at the site in August. The RP-1 storage tank had a much shorter voyage, coming from North Carolina and was installed in August as well. In addition, workers are busy finishing the ramp the launch vehicle will travel on its way to the launch pad, as well as preparing the site for installation of the numerous smaller gas storage tanks used for pressurization and other pre-launch functions. Although not associated with Taurus II, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) is also extending the height of the mobile gantry at Pad 0B, just south of the Taurus II Pad 0A. The gantry is being expanded to accommodate Orbital’s Minotaur IV and V launch vehicles. The pad will host the inaugural Minotaur V mission that will launch NASA’s Lunar Atmospheric Dust Environment Experiment (LADEE) spacecraft into a trans lunar orbit.

I think it's better than the Obama administration putting up signs that say that this project is being funded with our taxpayer dollars through the "Stimulus." The government paid (through taxpayer dollars) $5 million for those signs to say that "Hey look! We're spending your taxpayer dollars not only on this project, but on this enormous sign too!" These signs literally advertise they''re spending stimulus money. What Virginia is doing is trying to attract businesses to the state.
Gov. McDonnell spokeswoman Taylor Thornley told the Washington Post’s Anita Kumar, “These signs are a small, but creative, way of continuing to get that positive message out and helping to bring new employers and new jobs to every corner of the Commonwealth.”

You can read more on Kumar’s blog here.

So what do you think, is it worth it?
Looks a little desperate to me

Restoring an American Icon

I'm not sure how much this has to do with city living, but I feel it's an idea that should be put forth. I have for the past year been interested in the ship, the SS United States, which is currently docked in Philadelphia, rotting away. This ship was made in Newport News, right here in Virginia, in the early 1950s and won the Blue Riband for the fastest trans-Atlantic crossing of any passenger ship in history. It also is the largest cruise ship ever to be constructed completely right here in America.

Currently, it is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, which is a company based out of China. They have been seeking buyers for the last couple years, and the ship stands a good chance of being sold for scrap metal. As a ship made right here by Virginian working men, and as a symbol of our nation, I feel that the ship should be bought by a Virginia company (or the government), brought to Northrup Grumman shipyard to be restored, and then based out of Norfolk and Baltimore as a trans-Atlantic ocean liner. Other plans will not restore this ship to its original purpose but rather want to convert it to a riverside attraction. This would help create more jobs in Virginia and also would make Norfolk the home port of America's most distinguished passenger vessel in history. What are other thoughts or opinions on this matter?

View information on projects and add your own in our new Project Database: [Link]

At a cost of $77 million VRE adding 19 locomotives to its existing fleet for future expansion

Quote

Virginia Railway Express added the first of 19 new locomotives to its fleet Monday -- a move designed to improve the efficiency of the system and pave the way for future expansions, VRE officials said.
"In the middle of the worst economy we've seen, we were able to budget for new locomotives," said Paul Milde, chairman of the VRE operations board. "I am confident that when these new locomotives are all put into service that VRE will be better positioned to ease congestion, decrease pollution and improve the quality of life for our riders and the region."
VRE officials said the new units will allow for adding capacity in the future, as they can carry up to 10 cars instead of six. VRE is the 10th-largest commuter rail system in the nation, with average daily ridership of more than 17,000.

AMTI is on track to double revenue and is hiring!

Quote

AMTI, which provides contract manufacturing and product-to-market services, is now on track to double its revenues in 2010, says owner Larry Hatch. What’s behind the comeback? One factor, Hatch says, is that the recession left a major gap in manufacturing services. “Companies shut down factories and laid people off, and now that capacity just doesn’t exist anymore,” he explains. “Now there are a lot of opportunities available for anyone that has that capability.”

Hatch knows something about the effects of downsizing. He started AMTI in 2003 after being laid off when telecommunications giant Ericsson closed its Lynchburg operations. AMTI now has 72 employees and is hiring more.
Hatch says the company has focused on helping companies produce products that are critical to Americans’ health and well-being. Recent examples include jamming systems for improvised explosive devices (IEDs), high-tech electronic safety systems for coal mines, chemical-sensing detectors and building control systems.

Hatch hopes to continue his company’s expansion through organic growth, acquisitions or movement to new types of products. He acknowledges growth will be a challenge because of a continued credit crunch and a global shortage of key electronic components. But he believes that the company’s strong relationship with suppliers and clients will carry it forward.
