Meanwhile, in Downtown, the Valentine Richmond History Center is doing an $8.6 million renovation that will be anchored by a new, interactive exhibit called "This is Richmond, Virginia".

Here's another one to add to the list. Renderings of the American Civil War Museum expansion included. To me, it looks very nice - can't wait!

Yeah I'm pretty excited for all the new museums,

I'm looking forward to visiting the Black History Museum and the expansion on the Civil War Museum looks awesome. That in conjunction with VCU's new Institute For Contemporary Art coming soon shows RVA is really becoming destination city.

On top of that I think museums are a home run for the city, they do a lot for the local people in terms of jobs, things to do, etc.. and give people outside of here a reason to come visit.

According to their website, the American Civil War Center was supposed to begin construction on its new addition at Tredegar Iron Works in December 2016 with a completion date of 1 May 2018.  Anyone know of it's status?  As far as I know, construction still has not started. Was just curious.

I was hoping this would start soon!  Thanks for the update. Look forward to seeing this take off. Should be a destination museum!

Interestingly, we will be able to watch the museum construction through the Dominion Energy tower construction cam too!

If it hasn't been posted already elsewhere this week, it appears ground has been broken on the Virginia War Memorial expansion

https://www.facebook.com/pg/VirginiaWarMemorial/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10154684930197469

I'll look for an actual article but the news broke on their Facebook page so I put that for now

will include a 20,000+ sq ft addition that will have 3-level parking deck, 300+ seat auditorium, long-distance learning center, more display space and most importantly a Shrine which will house our GWOT heroes.

Messaged the American Civil War Museum on Facebook asking when specifically. Their response:

Site work is scheduled to begin at Historic Tredegar July 17. We plan to post updates to this page on our website throughout the construction process. https://acwm.org/coming_2018

Thanks for your interest. If you have any further questions right now, you can contact Patrick S. at 804-649-1861 x120

Thanks for the update!  They must have moved their site work dated back a couple weeks because I was last told that construction would start at the end of June. Either way, I'm excited about this museum expansion. The Virginia War Memorial should be an awesome expansion too.  So many good things happening with museums in Richmond!  This all should increase tourism, which equals more money and visitors to Richmond!

Has anyone noticed any construction at the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar?  It was my understanding that construction was going to begin at the end of June.  I'm not seeing anything major when I look at the Dominion Tower construction cam (shows up in the background)...just didn't know whether they were really working at ground level and I just can't see due to the trees.  Anyone have any insight?

Found this in today's RTD:

Groundbreaking for new building American Civil War Museum

The American Civil War Museum will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new main exhibit building today at 10 a.m. at Historic Tredegar, 500 Tredegar St., Richmond

Speakers include Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, U.S. Donald McEachin, D-4th, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Todd Haymore, Edward L. Ayers, chairman of American Civil War Museum Board of Directors, museum CEO Christy S. Coleman and S. Waite Rawls, III, president, American Civil War Museum Foundation.

Based on the description I read in the article, this museum will be unlike any other museum and will be very state of the art!  Really looking forward to visiting when complete.
