Richmond Breweries

It looks like the city is close to acquiring the Intermediate terminal in preparation for Stone's World Bistro.  Per the article, Wharf/Water St. will also be closed and the intersection moved West of the terminal.

A deal is imminent to give Richmond control of the Intermediate Terminal so the city can develop a bistro and beer garden for Stone Brewing Co. on property that is critical to public plans for the James River waterfront.

The development of the terminal will coincide with plans to close Water Street, also known as Wharf Street, which passes beneath the warehouse building, and have Dock and East Main streets intersect west of the terminal to ease congestion at the current intersection of Water/Wharf and Main at Nicholson Street.

Great new thread! I think we've been needing this for a while, but especially since Stone is coming to town. I really want to see the details of this development. I think the landscaping will be beautiful and I'm hoping that the restaurant next to the river (the terminal building) really cleans things up in that area. Can't wait a few years to see it!

I'm guessing that surface parking may stay packed with workers, visitors, and restaurant patrons.  Doubt will see a parking garage built.

One day a shared deck with perhaps offices or residential would be nice fronting Main.  Perhaps some retail could even be plausible there down the road.

Love the idea of more development around Stone! These are some great ideas Icetera! Seems like it would naturally occur once Stone arrives. Just think what the area will look like in 5 years!

Doesn't Rocketts have plans to eventually expand up to Nicholson Street? I remember the early renderings were pretty ambitious...

Correct.  The buildings South of Nicholson on my image are from an overlay from the Rocketts Village master plan.  Closing Water St. at Nicholson is going to change those plans a bit.

Some backlash over the city's involvement with Stone:

Stone's response to the second article:

A statement from Stone Brewing Co.

It's not a "giveaway program" or "subsidizing," since we will be paying the money back. More importantly, this isn't an investment in Stone Brewing Co. built to make us successful as a singular company. It's the intent of the City, Commonwealth and Stone to be an anchor business for an entire end of town so others can come aboard, build it up, create many new jobs, new revenue sources and, in the process, improve the infrastructure, marketability, draw and appeal of a part of town that is currently languishing completely unused. We plan on being a very active member of the community as we have been in our home county of San Diego and giving back. We can't prove it until we're up-and-running, but you'll see and we look forward to proving it to our neighbors. Another Top 30 US brewery from the west coast is looking at RVA!!

The Stone project appears to be paying dividends already! I feel confident that we can get this one too. It also mentions a brewery larger than Stone in advanced talks with Norfolk--it is probably Lagunitas (I have heard they were looking for an east coast spot).

This could be great news for the tourism industry.  Besides history, it would be great to have another tourist draw.  These types of moves to Richmond could land Richmond on the map as one of the coolest cities in the country!  We need some positive publicity to draw more people and businesses to the city!  Here's to hoping we land another one!  Thanks for posting!

I'm at work with some down time so I'll add to this. Since they mentioned top 30, as opposed to top 25, we can assume the brewery will be in the 26-30 range which are the following:

        26. Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, MI)

        27. Rogue Ales (Newport, OR)

        28. Victory Brewing Co. (Downingtown, PA)

        29. Ballast Point Brewing Co. (San Diego, CA)

        30. Ninkasi Brewing Co. (Eugene, OR)

We can eliminate Founders and Victory due to location, so that leaves us with Rogue, Ballast, and Ninkasi--with the greatest chance for Rogue (since the largest is most likely to need the expansion). Hopefully I'm right--that would be very cool.
