Here's Nicholson File. It's bounded by Acorn, Tingeley, Charlotte Hope, and Kinsley.

It's mapped here:
http://204.17.79.245...UID2=%27NFCO%27

Photos here:

http://local.provpla...il.asp?UID=NFCO

The map that Cotuit posted only shows the part of the development on the north side of the Woonasquatucket.

That's true. Nicholson File is the complex on Acorn St. across the river from US Rubber/ALCO.

So we're talking the pretty much the whole area from Acorn on the east,
Harris on the south,
Charlotte Hope (south of the Woonasquatucket) and Eagle (north of the Woonasquatucket) on the west,
and Valley on the north.

Hope RIPTA is watching, because this could lead to the return of the old Promenade Line that went to Olneyville; Promenade to Valley into Olneyville.

Yes, this just took the lead as the most exciting project in Providence in my opinion. No word on how affordable the housing might be, but I for one would certainly live there.

You can see how big it is on this map I put together a while back.

It's labelled "SBE&R U.S. Rubber Co. Site" on the top right.

That's a fabulous little map. "Little."

This is a pretty transformative project. The big announcement is tomorrow and that should illuminate the scope of the change that could occur in the Valley. I think however, that like everything, we should expect more change as the project moves forward. It's so big that it may be unrealistic to think that it will stay exactly as is presented. That's just the nature of things.

Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, along with Governor Donald L. Carcieri, Mayor David N. Cicilline and RIEDC Director Michael McMahon invite you to an important event concerning the ongoing revitalization of Providence’s West Side.

Please join us at the former-and soon to be again-site of the American Locomotive Works, off of Hemlock St., between Valley and Promenade Streets.

Here we will announce a major mixed-use development that will maintain the city’s historic buildings, while introducing new commercial and retail spaces, hotel accommodations and housing. The project is second in scope only to the Providence Place Mall.

We hope you’ll join us for this celebration of Providence’s past and future.

DETAILS:
The American Locomotive Works site
Off of Hemlock St. between Valley and Promenade Streets
Wednesday, March 8th 11:00 a.m.

Developer: Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse
Architect: Durkee Brown Viveiros & Werenfels, Architects
Project Type: Mixed-Use Commercial, Retail, Hotel & Residential
Project Size: 2.3 million square feet

J. Could you hook us up with some links to anything you have on A.I.R. regarding the buildings involved?

That map is incredibly helpful since I sometimes can't visualize exactly where some of the projects are taking place. Can we post that map somewhere on one of the "main" pages to use for reference to all the projects??? Could it be updated to include the projects on Atwells/The Hill and the Sierra Suites and such (hope I'm not asking for too much!)? Thx...

There's a Google Map accessible from the UP Homepage that highlights most of the city's developement.

Go here and choose Providence from the drop down menu.

This map too is in need of some updates.

What else can anyone say except this is all extremely exciting and such a natural idea that it just has to happen. A new neighborhood indeed! And talk about a rebuttal to the idea that the Historic Tax Credit doesn't pay for itself? Hello!?!? That's going to be a LOT of commerical space, though. The article said more than G-Tech and the AmEx building combined!

The completion date of 2008 sounds enormously ambitious, though. Will such other key projects as OTW, their own South Power Station project, and the Masonic Hotel even be done by then?

All in all, tremendously exciting stuff!

- Garris

PS: Channel 10 news seemed to have lots more renders they showed as well. All tremendous looking!

Yes, somewhat scary, what will that mean for new office development downtown?

It does sound ambitious, but there are several phases I believe, so the entire 'new neighborhood' won't be done in '08 I'm sure.

Atlanta just completed a large scale mixed use development where they turned an old rail yard into a condo/retail/office development and they really did a spectacular job. That seems to be the growing treend here in Atlanta and elsewhere.

Check out the Atlanta Project called "Atlantic Station" here

Wow! This is the kind of project that makes me want to move back to providence. It makes me wonder how far off they are from starting to really look into light rail/subway...
