I personally prefer Austin's skyline to Phoenix, though Phoenix's isn't bad. It's just unimpressive as far as cities with over 1 million people are concerned.

Having been to both cities to visit family and seeing the skylines in person...I would definitely have to vote for Austin. It is much more dense and is getting taller as the years go by. It also is more alive during all times of the day...whereas downtown PHX closes up at night. The PHX skyline is also not very impressive in person. It lacks height and looks more suburban as you drive through it...like Metairie with a few more buildings. However, I do think the capitol building and grounds are very beautiful in PHX.

Austin is much more diverse in architecture. Pheonix never saw the need to go very vertical bec. it's so spread out. That's last pic of Austin gives it the edge.

Austin wins in this one, hands down. Phoenix seems as though they stopped building they skyline at 400/500,000 people.

I also much prefer Austin's skyline to Phoenix's. Both don't have much height, but Austin's skyline just looks much better, and it looks like the Austin skyline could be huge in a few years, with all of the projects being planned there.

Also, just a little FYI, Phoenix doesn't have much height because it is so sprawled, like many have already mentioned, but there is also a 500 foot limit on all buildings there, which is a major reason why there skyline does look alot like "Metairie with a few more buildings."

Alright guys, now that I'm back from Chicago, I have to ask the almighty question, the skyline ranking of all skyline rankings, "the big one."

What is your favorite skyline in the nation; is it Chicago, or is it New York? Or is it...dare I say...neither???

Damn, Nate, this one is tough.

I LOVE Chicago for many reasons, and I love their skyline. It just seems cleaner and somewhat less cluttered than New Yorks, although Chicago definitely has its share of clutter. But I really like the Hancock and Sears Towers, and that sways me toward Chicago.

As far as sheer size, New York would be the winner. But on the category of overall impressiveness, Chicago takes it for me. I just LOVE that skyline.

Well, I'm partial to New York's skyline. Being from there helps  , but it isn't the reason I chose it. Like Brian had said, this is very hard to decide on one clear cut winner. Cities like Chicago and New York cease to amaze me, in the fact that there's something about them that just captures your attention. Maybe it's their names, maybe its the amount of people that visit and live there, or maybe its just the astounding variety of culture, architecture, and height in each one.

I'll follow you guys with my rankings:

Best looking- Chicago
Sheer size- New York
Overall- I give the edge to New York. NYC gets 100 points, and Chicago has 99.9.

It's so tough!

Well said Nate. It's that close too. After those two there is no contest with any other U.S. Skylines; There is NYC and Chi-Town, then a HUGE drop-off. Losing the WTC Twin Towers did hurt NYC skyline.

Wow, thanks for the stats!

New Orleans with 40 buildings taller than 200' dominates the list compared to the rest. And it's amazing to see all the cities listed that have nearly the same numbers of 200' buildings.

Yep. Looks Charlotte is the next closest, and then maybe Nashville? Very good compilation by Nate, and very informative. New Orleans is still the champ, baby! :D

And here are some building height stats comparing Louisiana's 3 largest cities:

New Orleans
Buildings above 600 feet: 2
Buildings above 400 feet: 12
Buildings above 200 feet: 40

Baton Rouge
Buildings above 600 feet: 0
Buildings above 400 feet: 1
Buildings above 200 feet: 5

Shrevport
Buildings above 600 feet: 0
Buildings above 400 feet: 0
Buildings above 200 feet: 6

You know, I USED to like Shreveport's skyline...until I found out that has 0 buildings over 400 feet tall.

Nice job, BRIAN! <_<

Rediculous.

Actually we have a building that's well over 400 feet, but it's still inside my head and I won't let it out.

Oh, well...alright then, that just about changes everything.

But I still don't like Shrveport's skyline anymore! -_-

And it's still rediculous!

Surprised to see Richmond in the grouping....usually it wouldnt be close to ranking with those, but I guess when you look at metros, being it's generally around 1.2-1.5 it fits. Thanks for showing those statistics :) Pretty interesting...

Well, in all fairness, Baton Rouge only has the State Capitol for now.

But... well...

Bite me.

Alright, now that that's over, lets get back to some skyline talk. ;)
