Biloxi and the Coast

The local Biloxi paper has a piece on private efforts to coordinate rebuilding on the Mississippi coast: http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/12887683.htm. The design coordinator is Duany, and the chairman, Jim Barksdale, runs the local newspaper. This effort is funded by the Knight Foundation (of Knight-Ridder papers). Nevertheless, the list of architects and urban planners is impressive and promising.

Why do I have to go to "Louisiana" to find any discussion of Mississippi???

I don't think there's been enough demand for a Mississippi forum. But you never know. It wasn't too long ago that there wasn't a Louisiana forum either. NCB used to post on the Arkansas forum. If you can get some interest and let the moderators you want a Mississippi forum and keep on them you might be able to get one. I wouldn't be too surprised if one came about eventually. Most of the southern states seem to slowly be getting their own forums.

As with Florida after its spate of hurricanes, there seems to be little dimunition of interest in living on or near the water. I rather like the idea of using hurricane detritus to build up the land before rebuilding. I'm really hoping that expedience won't trump clever thinking, on the coast or in New Orleans.

Another possible casino for Biloxi.....from the Sun Herald...

While I hear that they have done a decent job with the Las Vegas Golden Nugget, I will withold an opinion until I have seen a rendering of the proposed project.

Still more on the project, but no picture of the 600 room hotel tower....from WLOX Channel 13 including a video clip...

I can't say I am thrilled at the prospect of the restaurants. Joe's Crab Shack has to be one of the most obnoxious restaurant "concepts" I have ever run across. Bad food and singing potwashers....no thanx

Looks like a great project for Biloxi!

There seem to be new major developments popping up all over the Gulf Coast, after Katrina.

I agree with you Tom, about the resaurant prospects, I think they could've done a much better job with them.

:( It's really sad to hear about the Priest not having his church rebuilt in Pearlington in that article... Out of all the places I worked with the Red Cross, Pearlington and the Ansley/ La France area hit me the hardest... These people really deserve better. Fema and the Red Cross are a mess.

That part of the article got to me as well.

Everyone down here deserves better than what they are getting -_- ...

I think the answer is yes, though the project had been on the drawing boards before the storm. I would guess that the surge of applicants may have come after Katrina. The lack of immediate action and the sheer difficulty of rebuilding will hamper many efforts by individual parties to rebuild on their property, opening the gates to developers with the access to both cash, labor and building materials-- all of which are in extremely short supply.

This is something that may happen all over the Gulf Coast. We are already seeing some of this happen in New Orleans and south Mississippi.
