Miami actually had an original ABA Team.
Before Wade or Shaq ,..
Before Hardaway or Morning,..

The Miami Floridians (1968-1972)
Although I'm not sure where they played, they didn't have a following like the Dolphins but were sort of successfull going to the playoffs 3 of the 4 years in exsistance. Team colors started as Red, White and Blue then later changed to Black, Orange, and Magenta. They beat the Minnesota Pippers in the divisional championship game, but then lost to the Indiana Pacers in the confr finals in 1969.

Incredible i didnt know this.

Miami is home to MTV Latin America which films in its studios on Miami Beach

The needle in the bay is actually the Henry Flagler monument.
http://www.miamibeachfl.gov/newcity/depts/...er_monument.asp

The Port of Miami (POM) is the busiest cruise ship port in the world, with 3 million passengers a year and growing. Port Everglades claims to be 2nd.

The Miami River alone is the 5th (I've also seen 4th) largest port in the State of Florida serving many smaller ships that service the Caribbean and Central America.

The Miami River is home to all kinds of unsavory products. They've cracked down on it quite a bit, but we still hear stories of major drug busts happening there. It's really funny to see the small ships leave the river loaded with bikes, washing machines, mattresses... whatever they can fit on it.

The oldest building in the United States is located in Miami-Dade County.

"The Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux was built between 1133-1144 in Sacramenia, in the Province of Segovia, Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1925 and shipped it to the United States in 11,000 crates. It remained in storage in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 26 years until its purchase by Messrs. W. Edgemon and R. Moss in 1952. The two men then had the monastery reassembled in a wooded preserve nestled along Snake Creek in downtown North Miami Beach, where it has become a popular and beautiful tourist attraction and a favorite wedding spot."

It's quite a landmark. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

It's east of NE 22nd Ave, near East Greynolds Park.. if you take W Dixie Hwy, you'll pass the NMB post office, a canal, and then the road will veer to the right at 167th St., and the monastery is on the right, behind a gate.

Another major Miami home-and-grown corporation is Ryder System.

Miami is home to more than a thousand multi-national corporations, and just about every Fortune 500-1000 has offices for their Latin American operations here. Companies include ExxonMobil, Oracle, IBM, FedEx Latin America, and others.

I thought Winn Dixie was Jacksonville's too.

But technically Winn Dixie has its roots in Idaho. The two brothers moved their operations to Miami, where they we're known as Winn & Lovett. When the business started to grow they moved their HQ to Jax (1940s) but they weren't known as Winn Dixie until some time in the 50s when they they aquired a chain of Dixie home stores.

Miami-Dade County is the only county in Florida where it is illegal to sell, purchase, obtain, keep, maintain, or harbor a pitbull dog, or to even bring one into the county.
