I'll begin this thread with an article from last month discussing the future of the CSX railroad tracks which run through the Coast. Most plans call for their replacement with an LRT line. This is by no means set in stone. The fight over this is going to be a long one as various sides play their cards. In the meantime, it appears that CSX is proceeding with the reconstruction of the rail line. This doesn't render the light rail question moot, however. From the New York Times.....

Tunica is beginning to consider the idea of a monorail to link the casinos. The timeline suggested is 20 years- much too long in my opinion. At least they are thinking about building something.

Any ideas on this from the Memphis contingent?

Yep I read this earlier in the CA. I think the article is correct in saying that a monorail will be inappropriate for now. I'd rather wait for Myriad related development to begin because the state already spent all that money on highway construction. Tunica is much better off with busses for now. There is also talk of a monorail thru Desoto County but I'm not sure if thats being studied after the Circle G resort plan folded. Im gonna post this link in the West Tennessee forum. Its been so dead over there for the past few days...

In the Clarion Ledger today, this article tells of Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta's visit to the Gulf Coast. Lots of talk about bridges here, but not one word about rail transit. I hope the earlier talk of trains connecting the Coast to New Orleans wasn't merely window dressing. If the Coast is going to change, rail transit must be a part of the new design. If not, things will be rebuilt in a manner conducive to sprawl.

Gulfport Airport Gains Passengers, Flights

Passenger levels at GPT have already exceeded pre-Katrina levels. Non-stop flights to Cincinnati are said to be in the works, along with another, as yet un-named destination. I wish the prices would drop a bit, but I suppose this isn't likely in the current climate.

I wonder if the other city is going to be a Northwest flight to Detroit or Minneapolis/St. Paul...I know that there had been discussion of adding this...or maybe a Continental flight to Newark (I'd rule out Cleveland since it is faltering as a Continental hub) since Continental has a decent-sized presence at GPT.

I'd bet on Detroit before Newark- if only because of the relative size and influence of the casino industry in New Jersey. Historically, Biloxi and the Gulf Coast always drew upon midwestern markets. The Edgewater Gulf Hotel (long gone) was built by a group of investors from Chicago. Flights to Detroit or Minneapolis would make sense.

I believe they are working on getting flights, via Southwest, between Nashville and Jackson. No papers have been filed yet, but a number of influential Nashvillians have expressed intrest in a flight between the two cities. Primarily due to the proximity to the coast and Nissan.

Gulfport/Biloxi International's Expansion is Underway

The expansion of the terminal at the Gulfport-Biloxi airport is well underway. The terminal will be 165,000 sq. feet when completed next year. This could bring in new air service as well. It's certainly time that this work is done. Video included.

PanAm Loses Key Routes Out of Atlanta

Regularly scheduled air service to Tunica has suffered a setback with Pan Am's recent loss of routes out of Atlanta. The airport says they plan to gain a replacement carrier some time in 2007. I'd like to see something along the lines of Southwest or JetBlue. The service in Tunica was starting to attract passengers from Memphis as well.

Airports in Gulfport and New Orleans- Two Tales

While Gulfport's airport is moving ahead with improvements and increasing passenger counts, New Orleans is still struggling to regain its former passenger levels. Gulfport is still a long way from achieving anything close to the number of passengers at MSY, but its future looks good. Louis Armstrong International hopes to regain most of its former passenger count, but cannot predict when that might happen. Airlines are using smaller regional jets in many markets, reducing capacity all around. It will be interesting to watch how both airports recover from Katrina.

You may well be right. I can't say that having United would be such a big + though. I have never failed to find their service anything beyond the average. That's not to say that USAir is much better, but United might pull in more people from the midwest. I think there is more of a market for the Coast in the midwest than in the east.

Jackson-Newark Flights Added to Schedule

Continental Airlines will be operating daily flights from Jackson to Newark soon. This should be a good addition to the current flight schedule. I'd be happier if the jets being used were larger, but it's unrealistic to hope for a larger aircraft- at least at this point.

Allegiant Air to Begin Gulfport-Las Vegas Flights

I'm all for expanded air service at GPT, but I have to wonder if these flights will work. Other than casino executives, just how much traffic IS there between Gulfport/Biloxi and Las Vegas? Perhaps they will offer service to Orlando and other cities.

Allegiant Air to Offer Las Vegas and Orlando Flights

Initially, Allegiant Air will offer twice weekly service to Las Vegas and thrice weekly service to Orlando on 150 passenger jets. This could be increased if there is sufficient demand. Unlike AirTran's initial service on the Coast, this will not be subsidized by the casinos. The Orlando flights should have no trouble filling up. As for the Vegas flights, let's just hope they know something we don't. This is a good step forward for the airport. It would still be nice to get another mainline carrier.

Does anyone in here agree that Tunica would be perfect for Skybus (this new airline out of Columbus, Ohio that is known for having at least ten seats on every flight for $10). The airline caters to a market for secondary airports out of major cities (which Tunica was to Memphis when it had PanAm to Atlanta). Plus, Tunica did well on those PanAm flights to ATL. The only reason the airline pulled out of Tunica was because it completely ended its ATL ops. I just think this would be a big plus and avoid any bloodbath competition between Skybus and Northwest and anyone else up at MEM.

Skybus would certainly be interesting in that market. I wish they were coming closer to the DC market! I think that a low-cost carrier could work well out of Tunica. I suppose that getting Southwest there would be nearly impossible. Someone else will have to be their guinea pig.

GPT Welcomes Allegiant Air and New Restaurants

Service to Orlando and Las Vegas from Gulfport began earlier this week. The growing passenger crowds have given cause for new restaurants. Four new outlets will open in October- the Lazy Magnolia Brewery. Caribou Cofee, Bayside Grill and an Arby's. In the meantime, a temporary concession has opened just past the security area. Perviously, the one restaurant was outside the security area. All of this is a strong sign of recovery.

Hey, guys. I've flown into GPT twice this summer, and I love seeing the progress. It is such a nice little airport. I love how the airport authority really seems to have taken careful consideration with the expansion. It looks fantastic! Also, Northwest goes back to mostly DC-9 service this winter to MEM, so that's certainly an upgrade. Delta is supposed to add more seats this winter too. Go, Gulfport-Biloxi!
