Richmond Coffee House

Crime, gunfire and mayhem are becoming a major nightlife problem in certain areas of downtown Richmond. Within a month four incidents have erupted. Two of them involved fighting and the firing of weapons outside of Club Rendezvous on West Broad Street between Foushee and Adams streets during April's First Friday and again last Friday night.

Gunfire has resulted in death to an individual in the 1600 block of East Grace Street in Shockoe Bottom as recently as 2:00 AM this morning. Less than a month ago another person was shot and killed in the parking lot of Have a Nice Day Cafe a few blocks away at 18th and Main Streets in The Bottom. The alleged perpetrater has been caught by Richmond police.

Stories from yesterday's and today's RTD:

Something must be done, and done soon! Otherwise citizens will avoid the city after dark.

According to John M in today's River District News, a police report of Noteworthy Incidents reveals a second shooting in Shockoe Bottom occurred in the 00 block of South 18th Street at the same time (2:00AM Saturday) as the fatal shooting a few blocks away in the 1600 block of East Grace Street.

The second incident is classified as an "aggravated assault."

I was within a block of Club Rendezvous at the time of this latest incident. I didn't notice anything. I think that the club is on the radar now and every incident will be blown out of proportion for the foreseeable future. I've never seen any trouble at that place (and live within two blocks of it, walking past it at all times on various days of the week). If some kids are getting out of hand they need to be dealt with. The club itself is doing nothing to promote or facilitate this kind of behavior and does not need to be shuttered because of some teenagers pumped up on testosterone and acne medication.

Spearheaded by 2nd district Councilman Samuels, solutions are being sought to deal with promoters of teen parties, the venues which host them and the guardians of youths who attend them.

According to this story, teens at some of these parties range in age from 12 years to 17.

Here is more media discussion on downtown partying (or "wilding" as its sometimes called in New York.)

Have a Nice Day Cafe is a chain that operates in several cities. The one in Norfolk was recently closed along with at least one other club in Waterside. The Shockoe Bottom building at one time was known as The Flood Zone and attracted a preppy crowd.

Isn't the Adams/Morgan neighborhood in D.C. somewhat similar to Shockoe Bottom?

Defense Secretary Gate's plan to reduce or eliminate the Joint Forces Command in Southern Hampton Roads, while not directly affecting the Richmond economy, might have a devastating effect in Tidewater.

Gates is quoted by the Washington Post as saying "Virginia might offset the loss of Joint Forces Command with billions more for Navy shipbuilding, a bulwark for Northrop Grumman's giant yard in Newport News."

The Richmond Times Dispatch and many of its loyal readers are in an orgasmic dither reporting on the Tea Party convention.

http://www2.timesdis...ap08-ar-549527/

I wonder if there are counter demonstrations in or near the convention center?

Here is a Washington Post story by way of the Norfolk Virginian Pilot.

Does anybody know what is going into the old used car dealership at 47th and Forest Hill Ave., just up the street from Cielito Lindo? Lots and lots of work going on there and a huge new sign appears to be going up (with no writing yet, alas).

jb, I'm sure I read somewhere that a new restaurant is going into that space. I'll do a little research.

All of a sudden after being totally ignored by the Richmond press, Occupy Richmond is getting some attention.

From today's RVANews:

http://rvanews.com/n...-movement/51968

OK, we get it...they're getting press attention (this has been posted a couple times on this board already). That may or may not be a good thing for them - I've seen quite a bit of press that shows that some folks out there are not even mentally in this solar system (this has been clearly depicted by their behavior and comments), but I digress....

I walked down there today at lunch and there were a few (12?) people hanging out with a bunch of sign posted around the park. They were nice folks but I'm still not sure I understand the point - they were talking about living "off the grid", but isnt that easier with a less intrusive government and not living in the middle of a public park?

Oh well, to each his own

On top of that, they had to fight the government in order to be allowed to live in the park.

About 100 protesters were occupying Kanawa Plaza across from the towering Federal Reserve Bank building when it was raided by Richmond police early this morning. Approximately 15 were arrested for refusal to leave the park.

Photos in the "Related" box show protesters in the city's largest and most beautiful (albeit dry as usual) fountain at Kanawa Plaza tending to their "housekeeping."

It looks like the mayor had a choice of either refunding the Tea-Party the $10000 they were required to pay for 3 days of permits or remove the OWS that had not payed for any such permits. It seems he chose the latter. Interestingly, from everything I have read/heard the police were satisfied with leaving them alone but they will ultimately receive the media blame.

Mayor Jones will deliver his STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS Tuesday night, January 31st beginning at 6:30PM and ending at 8PM.

It will be held in the auditorium of Thomas Jefferson High School at 4100 West Grace Street. Parking is available in lots adjacent to the school and on neighboring streets.

It is a Public Event and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you decide to make an evining of it, here are a couple of nearby dining suggestions:

THE PHOENICIAN (Lebanese specialties, atmospheric setting) -- 4401 West Broad Street, 804/359-5590.

or:

STELLA's (Greek) - 1012 Lafayette Street (between Monument and Patterson Avenues) -- Reservations strongly suggested: 804/358-2011.
