Let's adjust for population. Yeah, I suck at math so I might mess this up. Notice it reflects, to an extent, urbanness, with a city at the top and a very rural state at the bottom. And we've compared metros economically before.

Fortune 1000 Companies per 1 million residents

9.082 District of Columbia

8.261 Connecticut

6.504 Rhode Island

4.778 New York

4.244 New Jersey

3.942 Pennsylvania

2.290 New Hampshire

3.282 Massachusetts

2.371 Delaware

I hate the hypocrisy of a company marketing itself as a small, socially sensitive organization when it is in fact part of one of the world's largest consumer goods corporations.

It was small, until the socially sensitive owners sold out not too long ago... I still think it's the best ice cream in the supermarket and when I actually do buy ice cream it's always b&j

I hate the hypocrisy of a company marketing itself as a small, socially sensitive organization when it is in fact part of one of the world's largest consumer goods conglomerates.

actually unilever allows ben and jerry's to run themselves practically independently of them.

and they are still extremely socially sensitive.

Ben & Jerry took their money and ran!! Typical Liberals!!

Please keep your arrogance and obvious misguided intelligence to yourself. You add nothing to the discussion. When you have something intelligent to say, please feel free to post it.

I find this list very interesting. every day at work I learn something about one of these companies, and It is really interesting to think how much the list has changed in two years.

let alone how much it has changed or will change in the current economic downturn.

Bear Stearns will go away.

many banks will either move down the list or jump up through merger.

Alcoa will possibly be bought, but may well buy a competitor as the industry consolidates.

AIG will sell assets to shore up cash.

I have always been interested in this subject since it is at the core of health and sickness in our cities. If Hartford looses one of its major companies it would be damaged severely. It happen back in the 90s. the city is just barely fought back.

Just as important to a city and state are the largest privately owned companies.

We often forget about the privately owned monsters of industry like MM Mars and ConAgra. But they are out there keeping jobs and billions in their home cities.

Forbes has a global top 2000 list

here is a link to what CT has, but you can easily filter by state country and industry

http://www.forbes.com/global2000/#p_1_s_acompanyRankOverall_All_Connecticut_All

Pretty cool that CT has 7 of the top 1000

BTW, not sure what the ranking is based on, because its not 100% sales, although it seems to have a heavy weighting. market cap is also part of the calculation as is profits and assets

Peoples United Bank jumped onto the list with their acquisitions

Stanley is not a top 1000 with its doubling in size...

Frontier Communications had also grown like madd after buying rural verizon lines...

but missing from the list in NU. I bet its because its a utility, or maybe its just got very low revenues etc... I am sure it will make the list next year after the merger.(cant keep a 12 billion company down)

all interesting stuff
