the only thing going out of business in eagle square right now is shaw's. the other stores seem to be doing just fine (as did the shaw's, but they obviously don't give a crap about the neighborhood or providence in general).

I don't think that's necessarily true. I did hear that the staples is the lowest performing staples in the entire region, and there are some other things happening at eagle square that are not at all good news.

In any event, I have heard that the meeting scheduled for Thursday will happen the following week and I am waiting for confirmation on the date/time.

while i really like that staples (it has a more comfortable feel to it than the big warehouse style ones), they seem to have a smaller stock than some of the bigger ones, meaning they seem to be out of more than the others at any given time (found this out when shopping for supplies to make save the dates for our wedding).

are you able to share what the other "not at all good news" is?

as boring as it may be, i'd still like to see a trader joe's to come to providence. every surrounding state has one... i'm into all that crunchy natural food eating, and whole foods is just so expensive...sigh..

I personally think its really bad Shaws is leaving obviously.. I also dont think a Supermarket is the answer.. Theres Price Rite in The O Square, Price CHOPPER or savalot on Killingly, so theres your ghetto grocers covered..

Trader Joes, come on... Unless they start playing "The Byrds - Eight Miles High" 24-7 over loud speakers in Eagle Square and you patchoulis flock because of those dulcet tones and take over the area hardcore, thats not happening..

I see a Kohls going in.. Or a TARGET.. Something like that as the best possible solution..

target would kick ass, especially if it was the one with the larger grocery section. i would just need to get my produce somewhere since target doesn't have produce. kohl's would also be cool. one of my favorite clothing/small department stores.

A Target would be amazing, but I dont think there is anywhere near enough room for them. I would swoon majorly if they did a scaled back urban location though.

i remember the days, she said from her rocking chair on the porch, when we bought our produce from some old guy with really long white hair, off the back of his truck, across atwells from Ft Thunder...

We need to lure over one of the produce vendors from Westminster...

i would prefer to buy from a guy selling stuff off the back of his truck. it's just more convenient to get it in a grocery store along with everything else i have to get. if there were a vendor like that closer than westminster, i'd walk over after getting home from work.

I just can't see that happening down there. Target & Kohls would take a good look at the area per capita income/medium income and demographics and would clearly conclude that a store there probably wouldn't be profitable. Look around you, where are these stores located. Warwick, Seekonk and North Attleboro. I don't even see a KMart locating there. What you would see is a Job Lot.

Note Update

Promenade District Neighborhood Meeting
Forum for a community dialogue

When: Wednesday, August 29th 2007. 7PM
Where: Providence Public Safety Complex, Auditorium (1st Fl.)
325 Washington St.
(Please park in garage directly across Dean St. from entrance)

"What is the neighborhood impact of the Shaw's Supermarket departure from Eagle Square?
What does the community want in its place and what role can we have as stakeholders to influence Super Value in its choice of a replacement tenant?"

Five years ago, the Providence City Council supported the Eagle Square development because of a commitment to bring a Shaw's Supermarket to our neighborhood and the belief that this would improve the standards and quality of life for the local community. It is clear by the recent concerns that have been raised over its departure, that the presence of Shaw's has indeed been an important face and venue for those who live in our community. The fact that the long-term commitment of this supermarket has not manifested itself means that the neighborhood and all of its improvements stand a real chance of being compromised by the outcome. Please join neighborhood residents, businesses, City Councilwoman Joan DiRuzzo and representatives from New England Expedition & Shaw's Supermarket for a community discussion of the impact this has on our neighborhood and how we can play a role in its outcome.
  • Would you make an effort to shop at Shaw's if it stayed open on a trial basis?
  • What would you like to see in the place of a Shaw's supermarket?
  • How will the loss of a Shaw's anchor tenant affect the other Eagle Sq. tenants...the residential market, local businesses and the RIPTA services to Eagle Square?
  • Why did this happen and what can we do to support the existing businesses in the Eagle Square Shopping Center?
  • How can the venues at Eagle Square serve you better?
  • What kinds of shops, services and businesses would you like to have in the Promenade District and how can we encourage developers to seek them out?
  • How can we as a neighborhood community organize ourselves to be better connected with the local businesses so that we are aware of financial difficulties from the onset?

Please bring your thoughts to the table on August 23rd. We will try to treat this as a preliminary dialogue and hope to organize the interested parties through a contact email list so we can act in a timely manner to the situation. In order to have a productive discussion, please keep your thoughts brief and focused on the immediate situation and not the controversy that has been associated with Eagle Square.

Please RSVP to pdneighborhood@gmail.com For questions or directions: (401) 338-1714

i rarely see hippies at Trader Joes in Needham. Mostly i see working and middle class people, sometimes families but not that often. Now and then i see some snotty entitled person whose cart takes up the whole aisle while talking on the phone. No hippies though.

I kinda fail to see why Trader Joe's is such a hotly contested establishment. It's a damn grocery store, I call that a win.

Maybe with PriceRite in Olneyville and the Stop & Shop on Manton Ave we simply just do not need another full grocery store on the West Side. But, if we do, I give my vote to Trucchi's as usual. It's cheaper than Shaws and Stop & Shop but has a nice bakery, produce and meats. And somebody mentioned Price Chopper, that place is awesome too, and very cheap. They have THE BEST supermarket donuts and have a whole aisle of bulk candy by the pound.

Meanwhile, the Stop & Shop on Branch Ave is even more mobbed than before without the two Shaws. My friend who works there said they're hiring 30 new employees to deal with it.

I think a big part of the problem is that TJ's has basically told Providence to go f*ck itself more than once. Although maybe Cotuit has other issues with them as well.

I would say we do need anther full service grocery store on the West Side. The ones you mentioned are sub-par. They are not the same caliber as Whole Foods or Eastside Marketplace. With the influx of more money into the West Side, there is greater demand for better quality. People that shop at Price-Rite deserve better as do people that now travel outside their urban neighborhood for groceries.

And Price-Rite does not sell organic goat cheese, immediately making it unacceptable.

Then again, we think we have it bad over here...
