Natchez is one of the great treasures of the South. Careful preservation has ensured that most of its landmarks have remained intact. Current development pressures have raised important issues about the future of this small city. I think these developments could be a positive thing for Natchez, provided that care is taken to insist upon good design. A couple of examples of new projects and ideas....from the Natchez Democrat

I agree with you Tom. I think these developments could be good for Natchez, as long as they are carefully planned and designed, to fit into the city's history and culture.

This has been a major issue in New Orleans since as long as I can remember, especially in the French Quarter. Everytime there is a major project planned for the area around the Quarter, all kind of battles break out. Harrah's had to go through all kinds of development battles just to get their 30 storey hotel approved, and its a few blocks down from the Quarter.

But I think New Orleans has done a very good job of mixing new developments in with the historic structures in the city, and that has turned out to be a major positive for the city, and it could be a positive for Natchez as well.

As long as guidelines are set for projects interfering with the history of the city, projects are planned, designed, and constructed very carefully, and the city doesn't let developmers run wild all over the city with condo projects and things of that nature, I think it could be a major positive for the future of the city.

Bob Dean, the (ex-zillionaire from Baton Rouge) owner of the Bentley in Alexandria, also owns the Eola Hotel. Word is that it will soon be taking a Holiday Inn franchise. I can't possibly see this as good news, though I suppose we should be glad he hasn't closed the doors. Actually, the hotel is doing quite well financially.

I'm happy to hear that the hotel is doing well financially.

When I looked at the website, I thought about the last time I was up in Natchez, and I really need to get over there soon! Yet another thing to add to my list of thing's to do when I finally get a camera.

Charles Cato is proceeding with his plans for the Emerald Star Casino. The Ramada Hilltop will be mostly demolished and rebuilt as the casino hotel. The Briars will be included as part of the hotel complex. I have not seen any drawings of the proposed development, but the Ramada is execrable, so almost anything should be an improvement.

^Has any sort of rendering been released yet?

I still hope its not some tacky fake-historic type design.

I have searched diligently and come up with nothing. What scares me is the suspicion that this will be presented as a fait accompli without the chance for more discussion. I'm not especially sad to see the old Pecan Factory demolished, but this is a sensitive location. Something unfortunate in this location would have long-lasting repercussions.
