Fort Lauderdale's Metamorphosis

The Transformation of Fort Lauderdale

I happened to run across this video of Spring Break 1985 while researching a particular property in Fort Lauderdale. While Spring Break undoubtedly filled the pockets of many merchants, restaurants and hotels, its absebce is not to be mourned. While I never even visited Fort Lauderdale until 1999, I've heard stories about what it was like during the 70's and 80's. Maybe I'm just getting older, but the absence of beer helmets is a good thing....

I will grant you that I have not seen many lights on in the St. Regis/Ritz-Carlton lately. Still, plans seem to be going forward for the development of more hotels. The Mandarin Oriental project at Ireland's may not be announced until next year, but it is supposedly still in the works.
