I'm sorry if I came across as blasting Columbia - that was not my intention, I assure you. But you all really need to stop being ignorant about Greenville as I have stopped being ignorant about Columbia. You continually say things you wish were true about Greenville, but aren't. If this state is ever to become a real competitor with our neighbors (and it is not doing so well in that regard), we need to learn what truly is happening around the state and not continually blasting cities we haven't liked since childhood simply because of some rediculously juvenile rivalry.

Haha, very funny, BC! :P Apparently, you didn't read that article then. And BTW, Greenville could have chosen the triple-a team. Your knowledge is rather slim, but that is fine. :whistling:

Ok...NOW who's lack of knowledge is showing??? Hooterville could have chosen a triple A team, but chose a single A team??? That's pretty rediculous. Cities don't CHOOSE the teams...the teams choose the cities. Besides, even if they could "choose" a team, and chose an single A team over a double A team, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. But I think single A suits Greenville just fine. And for the record, no I did not read the article...I couldn't care less about Greenville, so have no interest in reading an article about it. That's why I've never once visited the Greenville forum.

You're right, there are lots of beautiful "hooters" around here.

Actually, three teams wanted to locate here (A,AA, & AAA), but only one could be chosen. The City decided to partner with the single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox (f.k.a. Bombers), for whatever reason. It seems to have worked out quite positively for Greenville as a whole.

Well it's too bad you want to remain ignorant then and say things that aren't true.

BTW, the Boston Glove says Greenville is a city of 60,000. Actually the census bureau's brand shiny new 2006 market atlas says that as of 7/1/05 it was down to 54,000. Add back in the 57 properties annexed the other week that I was reading about and you have about 54,200 or so, all gathered on Main Street.

And it surprises many to see 200,000 busy people enjoying the City of Greenville by day after hearing that. And many more just across the line in the County - but we've been through that before.

It's true that Columbia doesn't care anything about minor league baseball, but USC is not playing around with their urban ballpark/housing development by the river. Zoning hearing signs are on that property now. They've already jumped through a couple of preconstruction hoops.

And I watched a city council meeting on cable last night and saw final approval given for the 400+ housing units and office and retail development that will be built on the Kline property at Gervais and Huger, and that is in addition to the 700 homes that will be built at Canalside, which is on the verge once and for all of starting construction. Not to mention the new condos and townhouses under construction now across from the State Museum. But back to the Kline property momentarily. The developers have many years of experience and one of them was a starter on Clemson's 1981 national championship football team and said during the meeting on t.v. that their main focus is to be extremely sensitive with the development so that everyone wins. His partner said, "This development will be unlike anything South Carolina, not just Columbia, but South Carolina has ever seen. It is going to be something the entire state will be proud of." They are going to use existing infrastructure and not turn their back aesthetically or functionally on any of the surrounding properties. Lady Street will continue across Huger Street and go all the way to the canal by the State Museum, but not before passing through an absolutely gorgeous hotel that will be built of a perfect balance between brick and glass. The interior of the development will be all about pedestrians and the gathering of people in beautiful spaces.

All of the development in the Vista will tie in together and then eventually tie in with Main Street, which is coming along nicely with new development itself. Major players in city development are all on the same page with their determination to connect all the dots from the river through the heart of downtown and through Five Points and beyond, not to mention the State Hospital redevelopment.

Right now on Lady Street, American Apparel is upfitting their new digs, Wild Wings has just placed a bin for interior demolition debris outside of the former Meritage for their upfit. A new bridal boutique has just opened in a beautifully restored historic building on Gervais in the Vista, and a new restaurant called Hush will be locating next to it in the same building. Buildings on Main Street are currently being developed into one hundred, twenty five new housing units in the form of either condos or apartments right now. And one of the oldest highrises in South Carolina is currently being converted into a hotel on Main Street. The Five Points streetscaping is 2/3's of the way complete, and contrary to popular criticism has always been on schedule and on budget.

Yes, right now Columbia's vibe is a little bit diluted because it is spread out over a very large territory, but new development is sweepnig across the face of the capital city from one end to the other, and all of that development is being built for life after 5 p.m., and when it is done there are going to be a whole lot of people saying good god where did Columbia come from? In the meantime, what has already been done is impressive.

I'm in Cola this weekend, and I jsut happened to catch that on the local access channel this morning. Did you see the renderings for that sucker? WOW! That will definately be amazing. I was incredibly impressed, and now I am craving more information.

Skyliner, to be fair, you came in and started with some unsolicited Greenville boosterism about this baseball mess.

Minor Leage Baseball choose the Bombers for Greenville moreso that Greenville chose the Bombers. Greenville wanted the Bombers because they were proposing the downtown stadium. The Diamond Jaxx out of Tennesse proposed a site in Greer (Spartanburg County), and the Suns (Hagerstown Maryland) proposed a site in Powdersville (Anderson County). So even though those 3 team classifications did want to move to the area, you have to keep it in the correct context. Of course Greenville wanted the downtown stadium- its helps downtown, it helps Greenville City and it helps Greenville County. The Bombers were also willing to fund the stadium in Greenville, but they were only willing to partially fund the one in Columbia. They wanted to leave. But jeez, who in Columbia cares? USC baseball offers much more than minor league in this town. The new stadium by the river will be fantastic.

Don't try to talk logic with Sky...he's a spin doctor if there ever was one. NO CITY (regardless if it's a redneck capital or not) would EVER "choose" a single A team over a double or triple A team. That's a fact. And the fact that he says they "chose" the team is ignorant. As I said before, cities don't get to choose teams...it's the other way around. Greenville couldn't support a double A team (Braves), so the Braves got the hell out of town. (who can blame them) And the Bombers knew they could never compete with the Gamecocks, so they headed to the upstate. As I said before...single A is perfect for Greenville.

Spartan, if you are impressed with the Kline development, then I know that it is something that will play a significant role in taking DT Columbia to its next level. Can't wait for renderings myself. ;)

I wish I had seen that program; I can't wait to see how it will look, it's only a few blocks from my office.

Everyday I ride past the clear lot I try to imagine what's going up. Once canal side and the kline project rolls threw the downtown area is going to explode with developments. By this time we should see another tower sprout up DT and olympia mills area take off.

I bet you can stil catch it on the local access channel if you have cable. Its pretty boring, and the sound is very bad.... I just happened to flip to it when they were bringing out the rederings ;)

I checked it out tonight; if the project comes to fruition as announced it will be a sight to behold!

You still have the facts a bit wrong, but that is okay. As I stated earlier, my intention has not at all been to blast Columbia. I wish the same sentiment would be reciprocated toward Greenville, but we can live with whatever must be. I only made the comment about "ignorance" because anyone who makes it a habit to completely ignore facts, but state something he or she wishes to be true instead, regardless of accuracy, needs a change in philosophy. No harm intended, I assure you all. I am enjoying learning about the many developments happening and planned in Columbia. Without this forum, I would know far less about the change taking place there. Keep the information coming!
