Downtown Atlanta District Developments

Downtown continues to get more family/tourist hotel rooms, as opposed to the convention/business oriented hotels that used to dominate the market. A ~30-story hotel, rumored to be a Hard Rock hotel, next to the Hilton Garden Inn is being fast-tracked through the permitting process and the brick building on the site was demolished last week.

There was an interesting article in the Business Chronicle about the homeless shelter on Peachtree and Pine going forward with a renovation despite loads of pressure from the city to move the facility.

How appropriate is it to have a homeless shelter on on one world-class street?

That would be great. It would help the vicinity around the current Hard Rock if they could do something to spruce up that area on Baker Street where Goosebumps is located. I have seen families walking by there in the evenings and wondered what their impressions were.

There is a plan for Baker as part of the Centennial Park area improvments but it seems NOTHING moves slower in Atlanta (if at all) than streetscape improvements. If it were a road widening, the DOT would've had that sucker done 5 years ago.

  • 2 weeks later...

Looking at Novare's CP webcam, it appears they've filled the pool and decorated the amenity deck....have they started closing units?

Also, a large W has been hoisted onto the side of the W Hotel under construction. No harm in advertising early.

Interesting! Hopefully the Dome will continue to be a great place to watch and play football.

I'd like to see the GWCC/Dome/Arena campus become more cohesive and it looks like this is a step in the right direction.

Don't forget Restaurant Row anchored by the new HGI will dramatically increase the atmosphere around that area. Add in Aquarius and finish up the Ivan Allen Blvd project and you have yourself the making of a fun place to hangout before, during, and after games.

There's also the hotel planned right across the street from the Aquarium that would help to improve the street level experience from the HGI to Ivan Allen. The site has already been cleared so hopefully we'll hear something about it soon.

I thought the Hilton Garden Inn was the hotel planned across the street from the Aquarium - Luckie Street I think. What other hotel is going up and where's it going to be in regards to the aquarium?

The HGI is across the street from the Aquarium and is almost topped out.

There's another hotel planned on the block North of the Hilton Garden Inn by the Diplomat hotel company rumored to be a Hard Rock hotel. It's the same group thats converting the Carnegie building to a Hotel Indigo. As a matter of fact, it was reported that they considered the Hard Rock brand for the Carnegie building as well.

Edit: The site is adjacent to # 50 on this map of downtown projects. Downtown Developments pdf
