TREY posted a photo of the winning design over in the POTD Thread. I'll insert his photo here, too:

When I first saw it, I was left thinking, "That's the Carillon Design Contest Winner? It, uh, well, uh, certainly will stand out from the surrounding buildings (figuratively and literally)."

This one reminds me of the Moser Tower and Millennium Carillon up in Naperville, IL:

An Aside: That's a cool little riverwalk park system they've got going on up there in Naperville. Has anybody seen that place? No wonder it was chosen by Money Magazine to be one of the top places to live. It also makes me wonder why Greenville didn't make that list, but that's a topic for another thread. Maybe we'll make the list once all of the park and trail work is complete.

Ultimately, I had envisioned something complementing the Liberty Bridge Spires and ultimately tying RiverPlace more together with Falls Park. I guess none of the designers shared my own vision. That's a bummer.

Actually the one in the center of this picture was inspired by the Liberty Bridge. It has three large tapering steel post that support a hanging stainless steel net that the bells hang from. All the entries are on display in the Riverplace lobby worth if you want to check them out.

Does anybody know: Were these the only 3 entrants into the contest? Were there others? If so, does anybody have renderings or photos of renderings? I still can't quite fathom that this horrible design was the one chosen.

Oops - I think my question was just answered...sorry.

Why was this one chosen over the others though?

Actually their was maybe ten entries? One was very Washington monument looking several looked like abstract sculptures. One had most of the bells in boxes below the pool at the base of the sculpture!

If any one is interested l can post all the entries ?

Well ... with the exception of the boring square pool at the base, I kinda like it. I think it's curious and inviting, wheras the second place entry appears cold and ominous at first glance. Can't tell much from the pictures though. I'm just glad it's not another bright red thing.

I like the size of the one on the right. In the sense that it's mamouth in size and would become like an Eiffle Tower for the city. Something that stands out would definitely be an icon for the city. But human scale is good too...

Yea - the one on the right reminds me of monument circle in Indianapolis, somewhat. It is huge.

I went over to look at these today. The winner is kind of cool if you see it up close. The bells will reflect in the pool below, which looks like it will connect into the rest of the water park.

However, the second place winner had a cool sundial feature....

Don't get me wrong, I really like #2, I just don't feel it would be as appropriate for the location. Not enough contrast with all the surrounding brick and stone.

I suppose I will be going to look at these more closely this weekend. :silly:

An interesting fact stated on the design proposal by Philip Whitley is this:

The NAAC states that a CARILLON must have a minimum of 23 bells. Anything less is designated as a CHIME.

Only 22 bells have been given by Harry van Bergen to the RiverPlace project. I wonder if they'd be willing to cast a 23rd bronze bell to donate as well to complete the status of this as a Carillon rather than a Chime? :shok:

Another interesting benefit that could possibly come from having a full-fledged carillon at RiverPlace:

The GCNA (Guild of Carillonneurs in North America) has an annual congress (meeting) in June. Greenville would have made an excellent meeting place, but without a true carillon, that'll likely never happen.
