And just under 277, to find Belmont's Piedmont Courts pronouced 'PE-CO', which happens to be one of the most crime prone public housing projects in the city.

An old pedestian warning sign, from when 10th was a major corridor out of town. Now it just seems silly way up in the trees:

One of the most surprising little neighborhoods, between Central and Independence. I never knew this was back here along Sunnyside.

The Independence/277 interchange. The grass field on the upper left will be m-Street:

It would be cool if they could do a pedestrian bridge to connect to the little exposed section of the creek in the middle of the interchange

First Ward Place

This section (and a few others like it) are actually remaining parts of earle village, one of the nastiest public housing projects in the country in its heyday.

You know.....I never realized how good the skyline view was from Cordelia Park, but I think it might be the most impressive view in the city.....it will be even more exceptional when Avenue, Vue, and Trademark are finished.

thanks skyy. i'm glad i'm keeping everyone up-to-date on charlotte's progress. I've lived here for ~6 years, and it has changed so dramatically in that time.

Villa Heights is just south of NoDa, the rest of the photos in this thread are uptown or just east of uptown. I also posted a thread just on NoDa.

lol... maybe i should slap a big circle-c and my life story in the middle of the image.

Honestly, i'd say it is a rarer angle because villa heights isn't the safest neighborhoods. I use the mecklenburg pool at cordelia during summer, and i SWEAR we heard machine gun fire one time. (if you're asking if we went back... how could we pass up a free pool :) ).

Does anyone know what the official neighbor name around sunnyside dr? I guess it would have been elizabeth before independence cut it off.... but it could also be midwood or belmont.

It was quite a suprise... i went back there to take a look at the brick building being renovated, saw the fancy garden, and it just kept getting better as i walked down the street.

It is absolutely shocking that it survived the mid-20th century being betwen central and independence... and i guess it benefited also from being isolated considering the other side of inde.

That is part of Eliabeth as the boundary extened all the way to Central. The original roads still cross Sunnyside (Oakland, Louise, and Hawthorne still connects across) This area is still recovering, and has taken longer than the south side of Independence to come around.

The redevelopment of Piedmont Courts will help so many neighborhoods out......it is one of those major catalyst projects that seems relatively simple, yet will have far reaching effects much in the way that if Earle Village had never been demolished and rebuilt as the current 1st Ward, then we wouldn't even be close to having J&W, any residential tower, or the Bobcats Arena.

i agree with you about earle village conversion and the future peid-co conversion (what is the story with that, it was approved, but will the money come through?) both have a major impact on their sides of 277. The rezonings last fall will go a long way, too.

(i don't think louise crosses independence, but i just noticed that oakland does).

I'm hopefull that belmont can eventually make the change. BUT i hope it is slow enough that the black community there can benefit. In other words, i don't want it to be a people replacement and building renewal... I want the current residents to benefit from the appreciation and economic development. It is hard to know what to do, though, about the criminal activity if the same people stay. crime in that neighborhood is downright scary. I got a boldness kick last fall and i walked up the greenway, east on parkwood and then back down siegal. It wasn't that bad, but there were a few scary moments. South charlotte it is not.

They will still get Hope VI no matter what Bush does because it is already been approved. I have been told that it happening slower than anticipated because they are having difficulty clearing the buildings of residents. I'm not sure why they can't tear them down as they empty, but apparntly they won't. I'm not sure if construction will start this year as they don't expect to get them unoccupied until at least fall.

Louise is on both sides.....the Rutzler that you showed is on the Central side, and the street is residential with large bungalows on the 7th street side, though it and Oakland no longer connect.......It's a shame, because these parts were some of the nicer parts of Elizbeth before it was razed......

ok. that makes sense about peidmont courts. it actually looked deserted a bit, as seen in the photos, considering it iwas a weekend.

As far as Louise and Oakland... i hope one of them can be reconnected across independence with a bridge. IIt appeared lon my map at home that it did connect, so that is what i thought you meantion.

but i can see from the satellite, that only central and hawthone have bridges.

(and i recognize the cost and logistics.. but still)

As usual, great photos dubone, thanks again. I agree that the skyline view coming down from the hill driving toward the city as you approach Piedmont Court is among the best view I've seen.

Just curious...does anyone have any pics of Earle Village before it was torn down? I was always curious what it looked like. Im guessing the gov't standard issue 2 to 3 story brick rectangle shaped buildings all lined up in row.
