I worked right around the corner from SK when they first opened, awesome place! They have a great crowd, and live music pretty often. I know that they serve beer as well, much different atmosphere from starbucks. On top of that They also own Eden, the club that used to be sky lounge. I've dj'd there quite a few times, and they appear to be doing very well.

I know this isn't necessarily a part of the Pecan redevelopment, but does anyone know what's going on with the old Pearl / Ethan's / Betta Grill site? I've seen some construction work going on outside of it.

I've heard that Philosopher's Stone is going to relocate there when they have to evacuate their current site.

I dont have any information either way, but that looks to me like a parking disaster. Philosopher's Stone attracts a major bar crowd and the Pearl parking lot is tiny. I do question the need for an expensive restaurant in that location. I did enjoy the menu at Ethan's, but shame on me, I never took the time to sample Pearl. As much as I enjoy the status of a pricey place that close to home, Ethans and Pearl did seem to suffer from lack of business. Maybe a more casual place would work better.

I remember seeing the original rendering/site plan for Pecan Pointe in the 80s. The building was proposed to be at the corner. Poor zoning/planning at Char-Meck gave us what we have today.

True, but how much have things changed? How - in this day and age - did we end up with that god-awful suburban Bojangles at the corner of Independence and 3rd?

Here is an updated rendering of Grubb's proposed 20-story condo tower at the corner of Elizabeth and Hawthorne.

I like the fascade. It meshes well with the Midtown/Elizabeth neighborhood. It will definately be a transition tower entering into Uptown, and will have appeal on all levels for potential buyers.

Thx for the Update atlrvr!

This rendering reminds me how awesome a project this is. Y'all are really raising the bar in Charlotte!

But, is this a new rendering, or is it just a colorized version of the old one? I think the hotel still shows up there along Elizabeth, and that's no longer going on this block, is it?

Regardless. Neat building. Kinda wish they would build over the Whole Foods with (perhaps) a 3- or 4- stories of something, be it offices, condos, student apartments, etc. though I imagine that would make it more difficult to get the wide open space below that the grocer is probably aiming for. Wonder if there is something they could do to make it look taller? The one-story grocery looks kinda squatty with 20 stories of condos looming from behind. Oh well, that's immaterial, getting Whole Foods to locate here is enough of a win in itself.

Well, I looked back in this thread, and the new rendering shows up there as well, because it is linked to the architects website. This reflects the deletion of the hotel, and that stubby section will now be condos. The black and white rendering was from the rezoning petition, and not the earlier rendering that showed the hotel.

I think this is pretty close to the final product.

I've heard that Philosopher's Stone is going to relocate there when they have to evacuate their current site.

Latest news is that the Philosopher's Stone (& I think Jackalope Jack's) is moving up Pecan to the other side of Independence, near Plaza-Midwood: The Central Ave./Thomas Ave./Commonwealth Ave. core. All of a sudden Commonwealth's becoming "the next cool 'hood" (of course, nothing's truly overnite; been quietly turning that way the last several years). Phil. Stn. is moving into the old Steeple church bldg.......do a seach for it on another thread.

I heard Philosopher's stone may be moving across the street to the former Ethan's/Pearl house. That could be hearsay. Does anyone have an update on the Pearl house? There has been work done on it for a few weeks now.

i think that the P-stone relocation to the old ethans/pearl site is a rumor... i've heard that it will be a mediterranean restuarant.

There is a rezoning petition for a major overhaul of the Presby Block bound by 4th, 3rd, Hawthorne and Caswell. It would demolish the existing BB&T and all the low rises on that block and build 3 new medical towers 120-145 in height and a new 12 story parking deck.

Hopefully they will put the office towers on the outside of the block, and the parking deck in the middle. Quite often, hospitals in particular get that one backwards (see example: Carolinas Medical Center) and nobody at the city questions them or pushes them to do it differently, because hey, they're hospitals!

I used to bank at that branch. I was told about a year ago that BB&T is already scouting out a new nearby location. They seemed to think their building would get demolished, but of course they didn't know any specifics of Presby's plans. Moving it would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.
