  3. Could be some big news. I have known about this for months. They are doing core drilling across from the Nazarene Church at 5th and Woodland. I told Ron and WW, so we will see if there is a story here or not. They are core drilling the entire lot. NES has lined off some of the pavement already. We have heard rumor about a 4-6 story apartment building. On another note, the man who renovated the Flats At Fatherland had plans at one time to have a 72 foot (East Nashville height limit) condo building on the same lot. However, he spent a million dollars on the renovation. They are real nice inside. This is the same man who renovated the UA Tower on music row. Not sure when The Flats on Fatherland will eventually come down. This was a temporary rehab. Progress on 6th and Main is really slow. Delayed by weather, permitting, and financing issues, work has begun, but barely a rock has been turned. Still loots like an empty lot with a fence around it. Only one piece of equipment on site. 14-18 month construction time once they get started. This was supposed to have started last November. The manager of the Citgo told me the owner wants to tear the whole thing down and rebuild, or sell. He said they want a better class of clientele especially when he saw we were getting another large building across the street from him. Foundation work seems to be starting on the 6 town homes on Main Street next to Braeden UMC. Work on the new Family Wash location has stalled for now. Do not know why. Thats all for now.

  4. Here are some pictures I took today while out. This building has come a long way, and it is really starting to take shape. This is definitely not another square box, either. The Division St side has a lot of depth to it. It at around 10 stories now, so it will have to rise another 6-8 floors depending on what portion of the building you are looking at. I don't think I had a sense for how massive this building will be until today. It's clearly not a highrise in the sense that Sobro or especially Paramount is, but it will dominate the city block like buildings many times its height. When this was announced I had thrown it into the category of 505 Demonbreun or Rhythm in my head. In terms of street presence this will be more akin to the Aertson, TwelveTwelve, or Icon.   9. Greenville is on the map again as far as major concerts it looks like. Shania Twain included Greenville on her 48 city farewell tour and the Eagles just announced Greenville on the next leg of their "History" tour. They come from Miami to Greenville then to Virginia. Greenville is the only date in the Carolinas and Georgia.

After first announcement back in summer-fall 2013, finally BRT-lite service has been approved by the NashvilleMTA Board to start along the Charlotte Ave, beginning the end of this month (March 2015). According to MTA, it is to utilize (only) the standard 40-footers (instead of the familiar articulated NABI and the newer New Flyer units). The service is to be scheduled with 15-min. headways during weekdays and 30-minutes evenings and weekends. To adhere to an existing numbering convention, MTA has chosen “Nº 50” for this BRT service (in line with that of other BRT-lites, 55-M’boro Pk, and 56-Gallatin Pk). The single most noticeable change along the Charlotte corridor that I observe is that the existing local Nº 10 and the Nº 50 actually will travel outbound and inbound along Charlotte Ave itself, in the downtown and east Mid-town areas, instead of along Church St to 20th and return via 22nd, along which the local run currently has been traveling. This means that the runs will travel along “lower” Charlotte all the way from DT to 20th, as it should have been all along, IMO. There does exist a welcome “compromise” to serve the Mid-town medical district, which has its epicenter closer to Church and 21st, so the existing local Nº 10 will deviate along 17th and 18th outbound and 22nd/21st/18th inbound to serve access to the hospitals and clinics (basically what the local run has done for years). This finally will set the stage for local and BRT to serve the Capitol View site in North Gulch, and I suppose that this alone can boost ridership along that route significantly, as several of us have touted the need for a Charlotte enhancement. The Nº 50 BRT-lite itself in its entirety will run along Charlotte from point to point, making it a true Charlotte corridor for a change. As “torrid” as my relationship has been with (and against) the MTA, this is a highly welcome addition, as long as it can be sustained through thick and thin (that is, during the dog days of summer and the 2015-like winters). That’s where the “rubbuh meets dah road”, so to speak. As far as 40-footers are concerned, it might appear that MTA “overheard” my b!!tchin’ regarding spending for new coaches. This morning just before 06:30 hours, out of nowhere some lurkin’ brand new 40-footer came by and scooped me up to downtown. Gillig Low-Floor "BRT" transit coach as delivered to Nashville MTA (photo 06:29hrs, 2015-0312) I haven't determined just how many of these things are being delivered, but they are manufactured along the specs of the original Green Circulator units (Diesel-Electric Hybrid with roof-top battery nacelles [fairing] and curved windshields). My guess is that it might end up in the Charlotte BRT-lite pool, the end of this month. Now I guess that I’m supposed to feel sorry for Church Street riders. Well, as I see it, since Church from 9th to 21st will become a transit “desert” (as Nº 10 no longer will serve along Church), we’ll just have to get off our fat-asses and walk 2 blocks (Grundy/Hayes to Broadway/West End), and hope that MLBrumby’s streetcar decides to get built to serve Church and Mid-town. My hope also is that MTA maintains support and momentum to commence its next-fall planned start of BRT-lite on Nolensville Road. I suspect that it would be numbered “52” (paired with the existing Nº 12). As with any movement with mixed traffic, I anticipate performance especially becoming degraded during evenings with the outbound runs at around 52nd Ave and Morrow Rd, on approach to White Bridge Rd, and between Lellyett St. (where Charlotte transitions from 4 to 2 lanes) and Annex Ave., where backups are common, usually all the way to River Rd (and during early evenings.   15. I just landed in Chicago and noticed something leaving Nashville. We took off headed South then made a sharp turn. We kept turning closer and closer to downtown. We really did fly over downtown. Probably over the Tennessee tower. So turns out the day wasn't just being a pain.

  16. Does anyone know if UNCC/Hornets Sports & Entertainment/Charlotte Sports Foundation have plans to host the Conference USA Basketball tournament at TWC Arena in the future? This year's version is in Birmingham, and before that El Paso, Tulsa, and Memphis. Yeah it would be 2 weeks or so after CIAA weekend but so what, the occasional NCAA opening weekend or regional final weekend comes our way once in a while like this year. C-USA doesn't have a long-term contract tying the tourney to any one location, and they seem to hold a vote every spring for the next year's tourney locale. C-USA's geographic footprint is focused on the South/Southeast so CLT airport works well for getting people to-and-fro.... UNCC joined C-USA last year so there may be some waiting involved, or maybe not. Chime in if you think it would be nice to host it from 2016-2018 before the ACC tourney comes back to town for one year in 2019.

  17. I don't understand how the Round Building fiasco is not a bigger story in our local media. From what I can tell, an experienced company had the best bid, then the city completely changed the scope and gave it to a much less experienced company, who subsequently went over the timeline and budget and finally walked away. The city has had a huge eyesore in front of it's half billion dollar jewel for months, and the background of how this company got the job at all seems incredibly fishy...with all of the "silly" investigative journalism in our region ("see how ridges on your starbucks cup lid are costing you PENNIES more!!!") How come no one has really found out why they changed the scope and pushed the contract to this clearly overmatched company?

  18. I'm always amazed by the flurry of action without solutions when something like this might happen. I suppose it's better than apathy, but I never understand the "I want action, but I want someone else to act" mentality.

  19. I'd love it, too ─ used to buy cakes there back in the mid-'60s (as well as the late '90s), but I wouldn't get my hopes up ─ not yet anyway. The family just might be holding on to the property to repurpose it for other than for "homey" treats this time around. But since you do hang 'round there, I'd be delighted if you could keep tab on what does start to happen on that corner. -==-

  24. First of all, have these people have lost their minds?! Second, They cite the concept in Seattle, and having been there last year, I've seen the shared streets in the "Belltown" area where my hotel was. Dont get me wrong, they were incredible things. The Seattle parks and Rec department would close off the various sections and have everything from giant Jenga Games going to Salsa Dancing in the street! It was so much fun to just watch. But the street where they did it there is NOT the same as Bridge. It isn't even on the same planet (figuratively). The streets they used were more lightly traveled, in a quiet part of the city, had a more dense urban fabric, were in the middle of consistent tourist/bar/residential foot traffic, within sight of the Space Needle and wasn't even as naturally wide as Bridge (barely 1.5 lanes because the sidewalks are far wider). This would be a complete disaster for traffic, and being right next to the Highway, wouldn't even be a pleasant place to want to be anyway! I swear listening to the people cheering for this, giving all types of nonsense platitudes of increased property values and new construction, as if a shared street has some magical power to turn anywhere like you would see in Seattle! Belltown is actually less dense than most of the central city, but that is still 10x more than that part of the W. Side even after New Holland comes in. The Shared Street was a result of improvement, not the thing that made it happen. I SERIOUSLY wish they would just try this on a better street first where it could be a benefit. Cherry street between Eastern and Diamond is the only area where this should be done right now because it isn't as busy, has the density and demographics, and will be used and appreciated. I will try to find some more photos of Bell st., but here are some examples of what it looks like closed off.

  25. If I was to change anything, it would be at a minimum, to do something with akward corner. It is a big chunk of blank that exists for no reason. I still dont understand the deal with the tiny windows on the lower floors, and the big and blank elevator shaft. If you are going to have that, then at least make it one of those that you can see out the other side. It is just a huge, brick thing hanging off the side of a glass tower.

  27. I was excited to see so many lights downtown tonight. The Hilton was washed in red lighting. AT&T, Bridgestone, and Omni were lit with yellow and blue lights, while the pedestrian bridge and former SunTrust building were an Irish green.

  30. I was referring to standards of spacing the stations distances by the practices within the mode of streetcar. Not that streetcar is better than other modes for the corridor in question. I ABSOLUTELY agree that the Phase 3 and beyond should include a dedicated transit-only lane or median on busy Central Avenue. It would be more like a light rail or the traditional streetcars running mostly in medians. I still kind of wish our city's old streetcar medians would be re-activated for streetcar (East Blvd, Plaza, Queens, 10th, etc.) but that is rather aggressive for this conversation today. CATS is also free after a one time registration of a monthly transit pass. I believe this is higher-order math. But CATS wins in the end if the population choses to live in an urban location where they can bike and even walk to their destination. As they will then chose to transit for some of their trips for weather and lower effort. I personally am one of those people that take a B-cycle from uptown to Southend on many occasions, but then take the rail back home after I'm tired. My friends (some UPers) also will often bike or walk, but transit gets added to the mix far more often for them than the car-only people I know. __________________________________ The discussion is all over the map today, so I don't know what to reply to. But dear sweet mother of God, I am grateful our city is investing in the streetcar rather than just throwing more Chance Coaches on the Gold Rush Red line. Those things are just the worst. But most diesel buses are significantly worse of an experience and comfort than any rail line. I feel like the people who want only buses are generally people who have never ridden a rail line or do not plan on using the corridor and just do not have empathy for the people in that corridor. Paraphrasing an analogy of Petrov from House of Cards, it is like only having ridden in Lada all your life and riding in your first Lexus. There is just no comparison between a 3rd rate bus vehicle with a signpost and a brown cube trashcan compared with a large electric rail transit vehicle running on continuously welded tracks with a large permanent stations with canopies and seating. If you are thinking about building a dense urban development, there is also no comparison between a permanent rail investment in a corridor over a bus route subject to change at any time.

Stretch of River Road downtown to become more pedestrian friendly Sidewalks are coming to River Road downtown, at least to a four-block stretch of the thoroughfare between Florida Street and the IBM building that’s under development at Lafayette and North streets. The Metro Council on Wednesday evening approved a $126,000 grant to create a tree-lined pedestrian thoroughfare on the east side of the street, which will be across from a bike lane already planned for the west side. The project is one of several downtown beautification efforts discussed this morning at the monthly meeting of the Downtown Development District Board of Commissioners. Also highlighted was an international art competition to design a signature piece of original art that would be placed on the downtown riverfront at Florida Street and serve as a gateway to the area. The $350,000 competition, which was announced last month, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge’s Centennial Committee and will be managed by the Boston-based consulting group CODAworx. DDD Executive Director Davis Rhorer says CODAworx will begin accepting RFPs for the project April 1 and that they are due April 30. The selection process begins May 15, with the winning team selected by Oct. 15. “It’s really a defining element for downtown and the city,” Rhorer says. “Florida and River Road is really where the downtown greenway begins and ends. It’s the center of downtown.” Also at the DDD meeting this morning: Commercial Properties spokesperson Tina Rance told the board that IBM is on schedule to move into its new office building on River Road in May, and that residential units in the adjoining 525 Lafayette building will be open this fall. The former Latil’s Stationery building in the 300 block of Third Street will open within the next few weeks as The Watermark, a reception and banquet hall. Though I was already excited to see the theater there as, I was worried it would take up a lot of space that could have had more use. This is the perfect scenario in my opinion.   35. I assume you are talking about the 16th Ave Apartments? The neighborhood association never actually opposed the project. We asked the Planning Commission to defer for a month because the developers had yet to truly meet with us and discuss how this would impact the surrounding area. The Planning Commission required them to have 7500 sq feet of retail or office in the building which is exactly what the majority of neighbors wanted. Evidently, the original plan had zero office and/or retail and the planning staff strongly encouraged them to add it in. By the time the application and renderings became public retail and office space had been added in. There were several neighbors that thought the design was a little vanilla and that the Planning Commission should aim higher in terms of design which is the primary reason we asked for deferral temporarily. Our association had nothing to do with the moratorium. We had not asked for that and we had not opposed the zoning on the basis of increased density. The larger storm that was brewing was that preservation groups had really exerted a lot of pressure on the Planning Commission. As an organization that was not our position. There are certainly those in and around the neighborhood who are part of the association that are preservationists when it comes to Music Row, but that is not the majority by any means. As for the 1750 sq feet of retail....that was a compromise that we came to on three fronts. Forestar had based their financing on 100% residential, and according to their claims any retail space had to be projected to create $0 of revenue. They also were of the opinion that retail was an unproven use in this area, which is arguable, but they were pushing for less retail because of money. There was also a push by several Music Row property owners to exclude retail and especially full service restaurants from any development. They were opposed to any retail and/or restaurant use because it would interfere with their parking. From what I gathered, these owners wanted to be able to drive in from Belle Meade or Brentwood or wherever, park without any hassle, and then leave without any hassle. They didn't care what it looked like at night or on the weekends because they wouldn't be in the neighborhood. However, their voice does count for something and their opinion had to be taken into consideration. In order to appease all sides, we settled on 1750 sq feet and forbid a full service restaurant from locating there (which I would have loved). The 1750 sq feet will be large enough for a coffee shop/deli/limited service restaurant or a small service industry use (barber shop, massage therapy, Music Row tour company, etc). The reality with all of this is that the Planning Commission, at that time, had essentially nothing to do with any of this. This was a discussion between the neighborhood association, Forestar, adjacent landowners and Council Lady Gilmore. Since then, I think they understand that we want Music Row to be a pedestrian friendly area that encourages walkable amenities which is why they required the retail and/or office component in the 16th Ave Apts.

  36. I love this!! I realize that camera angles can be manipulated to show any number of perspectives, but this picture really highlights just how dense the central core of downtown Nashville is. I wish this could be the go-to picture of downtown Nashville instead of the tired view from the pedestrian bridge.
