  1. No, it hasn't gone down that much. All the awards for 2019 haven't been given out yet. As a percent of GDP NIH funding has been dropping for years, but recently the budget has held steady in terms of total funds. Sorry to take things too far off topic.
  2. Here's the current NIH funding in NC (number of grants and total funding $). For those who aren't familiar the NIH (National Institutes of Health) is the biggest funder of biomedical science in the US. They support about $25 billion/year in funding across all disciplines. 3. This could eventually lead to the development of a large scale biomedical sciences research program in Charlotte. Right now there is some clinical research at Atrium, but almost no basic NIH funded research. Charlotte is really one of the only major US cities to not have at least one major NIH funded life sciences center. This will bring more PhD's to the area and also the biotech spinoffs that come from research in their labs. Obviously this will all take time, but good news nonetheless.

  5. Or about a mile on the greenway from the uncc stop.
  6. Ely just confirmed on Twitter that the new hotel is a 250-room intercontinental, renovation of the theater to begin in May!
  7. I'm pretty sure Kermit and Atlrvr are implying it's the company that was recently bought by Duke that has its current headquarters in Southpark
  8. It would be nice to see $100 million put towards this rather than for MLS or adding 30,000 square feet (and another overstreet walkway uptown) to the convention center.
  9. DC's convention center is wrapped in retail. It's still an imposing building, but they did a decent job activating the street and filling the spots with local businesses. Just because it's happening elsewhere doesn't mean we have to do it here. http://mayor.dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-events-dc-unveil-new-businesses-walter-e-washington-convention-center
  10. Apparently the crva wants to pump $100 million more into the convention center and put a glassy facade on Stonewall. Unfortunately the preliminary plans still have a blank wall facing the sidewalk and a bridge so pedestrians can cross to Whole Foods. Ignoring the dubious benefit of expanding the convention center, this would be a huge missed opportunity. Why not put in some retail and start making some money from the building outside convention times? This has been done in lots of new convention centers. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/article101450832.html?
  11. Nice find! I agree the first tower looks better, but I like the second one alot better at street/greenway level. The first one has a monolithic wall facing the greenway which would really kill the great pedestrian experience down there. I like how the second proposal has units facing the greenway.
  12. When do the renovations begin?
  13. The tower looks great, but the street presence along Stonewall is horrible.
  14. Either way there was/is going to be a giant lobby on the corner, whether that's behind a stone (precast concrete) wall with arched windows or a glass facade the use of space doesn't change. If they got rid of retail that would be a different story. I think Sidney Harman Hall in DC is a good example of a theater lobby/space with a large glass curtain wall that engages the street relatively well.
  15. I like the new design more than the old one. The old tower looked like a bad version of three Wachovia. The street level is more of a toss up, but I agree with uptownliving that the contrast between new and old could look good.
