Mast General Store has confirmed that it will create a new store in the Art's District in the old Coe Plaza building along with apartments on the upper levels. This deal was made possible with a $2.3 million incentives package from the City, including a $250,000 direct grant, a $500,000 low-interest loan and $250,000 in public infrastructure improvements. As part of the public infrastructure piece, the city will upgrade an alley that runs between Cherry and Trade streets to give people who want to shop on Trade Street more direct access to the parking deck across the street from the Benton Convention Center. I wonder what is planned for this building. I always thought for some reason that it was pretty cool and wished something would happen there. I would think that the building may still have much of its original detail on it under all that ugly cladding. I really like this area and would like to see the Arts District expand over to Liberty and Main. All of these old factories could create a somewhat of a "factory or warehouse" village feel with apartments, retail and affordable office space.

It would have been great if the new clinic would have been in Downtown W-S because it would have pushed for much new development. The good thing, however, about the Kernersville location is that it will help develop that area quickly because like CityBoi said "development out there is going to happen whether we like it or not". As an avid shopper and Winston resident I am always looking for potential places for retail development. With 1000+ new jobs in K-Vegas I could definitely see a new lifestyle center popping up in the suburbs. Maybe the "Union Cross Towne Center" that was proposed years ago and just disappeared. I definitely would have liked a much different retailer for this space as well, but with the growing number of people living and working downtown stores like this are needed. I do wish this was on Liberty street instead, but according to other sources it is supposed to be more of an "upscale" dollar store that specializing in things downtown businesses would need and it will include a small business center with computer and printer access. Lets see what happens

I really hope Winston gets this new facility because we can use the jobs, as I am sure every city can. But with the incentives and already prepped business parks such as Union Cross I think we would have a good chance of getting Caterpillar. Plus I think Winston is probably more interesting of a place to live than Alabama and SC possible locations.

So glad to see this project moving forward. Some renewed energy in the area will help greatly. Although the financial crisis has threatened development greatly there are many opportunities for developers and business oweners to get available government funding. This should be successful because downtown living, especiallly renting is very HOTT and the places currently available are filling or filled up. This is extra perferct because this place is right in the midst of the arts district and renters can easily get to work, restaurants, shops and night spots in shorter walks than people renting several blocks away at the factories. Much Good Luck and well wishes to the developer that I really hope gets that damn Pepper Building moving. I am however interested in why the Downtown Partnership didn't just pick another developer from the Pepper Building competition to work on the building right now instead of doing another building first. I know there had to of been some other really interesting proposals. Weird

New mexican restaurant going in on Fourth street in the old Towne Jewelers location. Fourth street is doing well even in the current economy and it is pretty popping at nights on the weekend. also, I drove down Burke street and saw that someone is doing renovation in and old bar location. can't remember the name of the bar but it is right across from Burke Street Pub. This is a very interesting street with much entertainment and nightlife potential. I would love to see some really cool apartments on or close to Burke street to give an extra boost to the businesses here.

This is great that the school system is interested in the downtown area. I would just love a downtown high school..probably a magnet school. It would add traffic to the area. anyways....what the heck is going on at the end of the arts district near 8th street. There is alot of construction and dirt...but no signs

i hate that Gotham Park is closing because it was a cool home store but this is prime property in a good location....it probably wont be vacant long. I would like to see another retail store there or a cool bar with a different vibe.

there are many different firms and offices in the O'Hanlon building...I have been in there and they are actually very nice offices inside

I hate this happened but considering Struever was having financial issues it is best that didn't start something they couldn't afford to finish. I know that the new company isn't the most creative but they probably have a good reputation in building research facilities and they probably have many connections. Maybe Struever can be involved to bring in the national chain retail and restaurant companies.

the NanoMed institute would be wonderful for winston-salem because it would help attract many new companies and people to the city who aspire to work in such a intelligent environment where many great findings are being found and research being conducted. Also because more people into the city could possibly boost sells of downtown homes and surroundings areas because of the convenience........these people would definitely be those in higher pay ranges looking for upscale living.
