  1. So, from what I see.. it looks like 73 --> 74 --> 77 --> 78 which is a good double turn, but the 75 --> 76 the train sitting idle for no reason after returning to Raleigh.. what could be done with the train before 10 and after 7?
  2. I agree with everyone above, but I think RTP need both light rail and commuter service... Light rail that goes around Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.. Core RTP.. Light rail should have stops in downtowns, significant living areas, and sporting/entertainment venues Light rails should have stops every 3-5 minutes Commuter rail that connects Garner, Clayton, Hilsborough, Wake Forest, Pittsboro, Fuquay Varina, and Willow Spring... Commuter rails should have stops in downtowns and city carpool areas Commuter rails should have stops every 15-20 minutes Their should be a circulator bus that runs around RTP that makes a circle every 20 minutes.. Maybe even 2 or 3 (Blue Line, Black Line, Red Line) that all convene at the RTDepot Station where light rail, commuter rail, and circulator buses converge. Circulator buses should be free and companies pay annually baed on number of employees (1-199 = X a year, 200-500 = XX a year, 501-1500 =XXX, AND 1501+ = XXXX year)
  3. You know, I'm looking at Terminal 1 and the fact that it has 9gates and I got thinking.. Why not do Gates A1-6 and gates B1-3.. That would make the whole Concourse naming feature make mice more since. Before, there was a Terminal A and C but no B which cause an explanation.. Now you have ACD but no B.. And if you do an A and a B, it shows there is room for growth on both ends.. Just a thought....
  4. Grrrrr.. I do NOT see a proper Business class Lounge space nor do I see sufficient retail space. The business Lounge should be at least 1800-2800 sq ft with a bar, an eatery, a conference room, and preferably pod sleepers along with a main seating area... Retail should include at least 2 fast food, a sit down eatery, a gift shop, a news stand, and a specialty store.. Sheesh! Why does this need to be said?
  5. Just incised riding ScotRail from Edinburgh to Glasgow and all I can say is.. Amazing! Smooth ride, reasonable price, onto me, and excellent views.. Nice clean train with good speed. My. Only question is why can't we have something similar in NC? I mean, come on! At least hourly service between Charlotte and Raleigh with 2 or 4 hour service on the other route which should already be ther.. (Wilmington, Asheville, moreland city, Greenville, Fayetteville, Henderson, etc). The rail service was just awesome! Rather, just finished riding ScotRail..
  6. Raleigh to Fayetteville, in my opinion, could work without the Wilmington leg. I don't know how much traffic there is between Fayetteville and Wilmington, but I think Raleigh to Fayetteville could do well alone. I believe they choose the Raleigh to Goldsboro to Wilmington route over the Fayetteville option.
  7. Would it not make sense to offer Raleigh-Fuquay-Sanford-Fayetteville service? I mean, that's frequently I traveled and have 3-4 daily 2 or 3 car service could be a benefit for the area.. Or am I just thinking crazy? Could it be done if equipment was available? Would there be enough traffic? Just seems like a natural train route if we were in the UK or something.. Just a thought..
  8. Here's a thought.. Why don't the Amtrak portion use the lower part of the Citrix building while Citrix use the top portion.. Meaning that both win cause Raleigh can get another tall building, amtrax gets an extension for high speed rail station, and Citrix gets to be where they want to be... Hopefully y'all can understand what I'm saying...
  9. My prediction... SEA by Alaska or Southwest, LAX by Delta moved up to daily 737-700, SFO by United already announced, CDG by Delta, FRA by United. As for the LHR flight, it is going nowhere.. Even if US and AA merge, the flight will stay.. It's one of their more profitable ones...
  10. Aren't the Wisconsin train sets, like, 18 cars long or something ridiculous like that? I think if NC goes for train sets, it would more than likely only be 5-8 at the most...
  11. Agreed. And I don't know why they can't allow the Piedmont, at least once a day, to go all the way to Morehead City so I can catch the rails to New BERN!!!!!
  12. I believe some of the best accomodation options are those that are at multimodal locations. The Hilton at ORD is by far one of the most popular hotels because it is at hte airport. I think the convenience of having a hotel at the trainstation which is within walking distance of the convention center, restaurants, shops, and downtown would be benificial and make more the additional hotel rooms that Raleigh downtown needs. Plus having something like "Westin at Union Station" would be awesome. Just a thought.
  13. Then I say we go up to 100mph with the current equipment. That should be able to shave some time of the trip and make the time better than driving.. Just a thought..
  14. Quick Question.. is there any way NCRR can make the line between RGH and CLT closed so that the speed can be increased to a higher speed level? I know they are double tracking it, but is that enough considering the line has to share with freight. Should it be triple tracked with a dedicated freight line and closed so the Piedmont can potentially get up to 125mp? When I traveled the rail line in Barcelona, it was completely closed and it really MOVED! It would be nice if something like that could happen on the NCRR line... just a thought..
  15. I like it. I just wish they would add a 7-10 story hotel on top.. Something like a W or Hotel Indigo or something like that.. And I'm not sure I see the First Class lounge that the current station has...

  17. Looking at the presentation for the site, they will use them until Phase 2 and then they will change some to landscaping and the others will turn to employee parking. So where will the passenger waiting and longterm parking be???
  18. Doesn't RGH already have a first class lounge? I believe it's the only one in NC with an Amtrak FC lounge. As for the other option, NC could have a lounge like airlines do.. where you pay to use it per year and if you have status, you get a discount. But a lounge to get away from it all would be worthwhile. I would love to see a lounge with seating, a noodle bar, a alcohol bar, and perhaps a yotel or spa or something.. I mean, i fyou are going to take the train, you are going to want to pamper yourself. As for the parking, I don't think they should consider building the new building without including proper parking. That is probably one of the biggest problems with the current facility. It's 1 parking space for every 10 that's needed! Arrgh! If you ask me, they should let RDUAA be in charge of the building. They did a great job with Terminal 2. I'm sure they would have the foresight to build correct to allow for parking and retail and services and lounges and waiting space.

The Passenger Task Force provided the endorsement and sent the recommendation to Mayor McFarlane and the City Council. I do like the design myself, I just hope there are 3 elements included which I don't recall seeing in the original presentation. 1. Room for a First Class Lounge or perhaps 2 (Amtrak Lounge and NC Lounge for Intra-state and eventual Regional routes) 2. Parking garage (to perhaps hold up to 300 cars) 3. Space for a hotel or even a b&b on-site! It would be awesomely Cool...
  20. So, I was checking out the Amtrak site and saw they were looking to start thru coach service Wilson-Greenville-Kinston-New Bern- Havelock-Wilmington and Wilson-Goldsboro-Wallace-Wilmington. I say interesting, but if there is feasibility for coach service, I would think NC would say "hey, there should be feasibility for rail service". Second of all, I think I would rather see the service at Selma since it allows connection to Raleigh and Charlotte.. So, if the coaches meet in Wilson, you can get on the Silver lines and Palmetto, I believe.. If you get through Selma, you can get on the Silver lines, Palmetto, and Piedmont.. more options, right? I'm still a fan of rail service to the beach and believe it should meet up with the Piemont and be called the Crystal Coast Service (2x daily with 3 coach and 1 vending/sundry car - Raleigh to Morehead City) and the Blackbeard Service (2x daily with 3 coaches and 1 vending/baggage - Raleigh to Little Washington). But I digress...
  21. Motorcoach is okay, but that's a LONG motorcoach route. I still believe that there is potential for up to 2 daily, 4 car service (push-pull so no yard is needed at the MHC end). I know several people who have taken the train, but the trek to Rocky Mount, Wilson, and Selma from Eastern NC is too long by car just to get to the train station.. There should be a train that meets with a Northbound NYC train and a train to meet with a Southbound Florida train. Also, one of those trains should also allow to meet up with the Piedmont to allow Westerly travel.. Push-pull could account for the Asheville, Greenville, and Wilmington service.. would not need a yard if you can just have the engineer walk from one end of the train to the other and take the train back to Raleigh or Charlotte..
  22. Also, just to add on.. they need to have at least 2 shops and 1 eatery, plus an on-site rental car counter at the least... with a bus that can take you to their lot.. I'm just saying.. If I'm coming by train, I want to be able to either catch a cab or metro to my hotel/residence.. OR be able to get a rental car on-site.. the train station should function very much like RDU.. and to add to above, if not a full hotel..then at least a hostel or yotel where you have pods for sleeping..
  23. I reviewed the document, but there is still some stuff that is just missing for me. First of all, if there is a need for 150+ parking spots, where do they go after Phase I? It doesn't explain that to me. If anything, I would think they would need to have 250 if in fact they need 150. Second, I would really really REALLY want to see a hotel built atop the current location as a Phase III.... Lastly, I would like to see some more expansion inside the wye of the Dillon Buildling.. something is going to need to set the Rail station apart from just another building.. If you look at Richmond's station, DC's Union Station, or NYC Penn Station, they are all very historic and majestic. Raleigh needs something similar. Since it can't use a true Rail Historic building, they should do something exciting like Green Square is doing with the globe. That's different. That's unique. That's interesting.. Grrrr... I really want something that will make a passenger say "Oh WOW" when they arrive.. And hopefully the walkways will be high velocity glass.. Ohh.. and the fact that their "commuter" synopsis has a Greenville line but NOT a Morehead City line goes to show someone needs to rethink things.. I'm trying to tell them that a train to the coast is a MUST!!!! Why don't they GET IT????

With the state that the government (both NC and US) is falling, would it be better for metros/micros looking for rail service to seek private institutions to create/update/remodel train stations? I mean, i think if presented well, it would be best if it's privately run stations.. I'm sure then they will be MUCh more than what they are now.. I mean, if the city of Raleigh leases the space for the rail station to an independent company and let the City have 2 members on the board.. then let the private company do the rail station.. I'm sure what we will see is a 3 platform station with shops, a hotel, some sort of attraction, and a special lounge.. it would make the station an additional city destination not only for the rail but also for the city.. Conversely, I would love to see a rail station at RTP.. with a light rail line that went around RTP.. since it too could be a destination in itself.. where is the forward thinking in this area??? (Oh.. and a Tobacco Road Museum since Greensboro has the ACC museum.. A museum about Tobacco road, the schools, the innovations, and the future that includes nanotechnology).. What do ya'll think?
  25. Appropriately priced apartments and condos are essential to a thriving downtown. Without it, it's gonna be a deadzone. I think all of these are great as long as they are not all trying to compete for the same person. All these apartments can not be high priced elitist apartments. You have to have some mid-low range, mid-range, mid-high, as well as high range. And they have to be inter-dispersed. And, to make it worthwhile, there needs to be hotels and street level shops/restaurants/sundries in the mix. More boutique hotels would be fantastic for Raleigh. And at least a W Hotel, Intercontinental, or Ritz Carlton is needed.. I've heard from a lot of people who have been to Raleigh for a conference that complained there were no hotels rooms available.. The CC is working but more hotel rooms are needed.. just a thought..
