    Downtown Raleigh's Future

I really like that rendering for 213 S Harrington. Would love for something like that to get built. I often think that the little infill projects like that add more real character to a city than the big, master-planned developments. That being said, I also like the idea of extending the footprint of downtown onto South Saunders with that proposed development. It is interesting that both proposed projects have the same LA-based architect.
  5. Amazing how long this has taken to get off the ground, but hopefully it will actually happen in a relatively short time now. Construction of the retail portion is supposed to be complete by the end of 2020, don't think I have seen a time frame for the complete development. I hope this can breathe some life into RTP which is a great asset to the region but has not kept up with the times.

    Downtown Raleigh's Future

I think both the SECU Building and Charter Square are nice looking. It's not like Raleigh has dozens of glass towers so they all blend in, there are just a handful, and I think they are good looking. The design for the Exploris Building looks very interesting.

I agree the building is a little bland, but that doesn't bother me at all. Not everything needs to be an architectural statement. Looks like this is going to have plenty of interaction with the street and will replace parking lots. I also like that they are increasing the size of the sidewalk. New Orleans is flat and compact, a great place to walk (if you can handle the heat and humidity). Altogether very positive stuff, IMO.

Construction has begun on the $200 million South Market District development. First phase is a five story apartment and retail building called the Paramount. It will have 209 apartments, 22,000 sq feet of retail, and should be open by the end of 2014. http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2013/06/south_market_district_construc.html#incart_river

Here is an official announcement of the re-opening of the Saenger Theatre after more than eight years and a $52 million renovation. Looks like the first act will be Jerry Seinfeld on Sept. 28 and there will be a grand opening ceremony and concert on October 5. It will be great to see this historic theater restored to its full glory! http://new.nola.gov/mayor/press-releases/2013/20130613-new-orleans-mayor-mitch-landrieu,-canal-s/

Here is an update on the Magnolia Marketplace development. The development will be a 138,000 sq. foot shopping center or South Claiborne Avenue. It is currently 78% leased. They just started construction on a small auxiliary project which will include a bank. Construction on the main part of the project is supposed to start in the fall. http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2013/06/construction_of_large_south_cl.html#incart_river

    Charlotte Photo of the Day

Lots of great shots of the urban core and the skyline! I'm looking forward to seeing how the city looks when the Knights Park is complete. I am not very familiar with Charlotte (stopped on my way through a few times, but never spent significant time there). Does anyone have any pics of neighborhoods or smaller commercial districts in the city? I've looked through a good bit of this thread but not the whole thing and haven't seen much like that, but I could have missed it.

In some minor, but fun development news, a new miniature golf course is opening in City Park. There are two courses with 18 holes each. One has a Louisiana theme and the other has a New Orleans theme. http://www.nola.com/family/index.ssf/2013/05/miniature_golf_returns_to_new.html#incart_river

Delays and cost overruns in the VA hospital project. I understand these are big projects and the projections may not be exactly right, but how did they miss by over $300 million and over a year? http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2013/05/federal_report_outlines_cost_i.html#incart_river

Slight update on the riverfront project. A bill has passed from the Louisiana House committee that would allow the project to be financed on borrowed money. I still think one of the private developments is the way to go with this. http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/05/bill_allowing_financing_of_maj.html#incart_river
